the brezhnev doctrine by [archiveofourown.org profile] maleficently (The Americans)
Summary: She lives with a stranger who does not see her as anything other than a part of the mission, and so does he. [References up to & including 1x03.]
Elizabeth/Phillip, Elizabeth/Gregory; backstory/character study/spies and secret agents; teen; 3246 words

This story captures the emotional complexity of their situation and I love the Elizabeth POV. Just what I was looking for.

Bonus rec, something more lighthearted (and completely unrelated to the above in spite of the title):
American and Russian Relations in the 21st Century by [archiveofourown.org profile] Margo_Kim
Summary: Darcy thinks there's something funny about Steve and Natasha's new relationship. Erik and Jane think she's crazy.
Darcy, Jane, Erik and Natasha/Steve; humor/outsider POV; 2548 words

metafic rec (Yuletide Madness again): I have, in the past, waxed poetic about my epic hatred dislike of non-canonical freeform tags. But now someone took those useless things and turned them into a shiny poem. Yes, there is now a poem made up entirely of tags.

Title: Somebody had to write this (so why not me?) by Anonymous
Summary: This is a stupid fanfiction and I shouldn't have written it. I have no shame. Don't like, don't read.

Okay, I clicked on one of the tags out of idle curiosity... they work. /o\

Happy apocalypse. I mean solstice! \o/

The Hurt Locker rec:
Don't Ask, Don't Tell by [archiveofourown.org profile] ishafel
Gen; characters: William James, JT Sanborn, OCs; rated mature; 4863 words
Summary: Out of the sandbox and into the fire.

This fic really captures the feel of the movie. (I find the title somewhat misleading.) It's set a number of years in the future, the political situation is even more screwed up. But then, William James never cared that much about politics. Or anything else that isn't about disarming bombs.

The characterizations are spot on, even the OCs feel real, and the story is so tense, I held my breath during parts of it.

Avengers:
Amateur Theatrics by [archiveofourown.org profile] galaxysoup
Gen; PG-13; team & Loki; 26586 words
Summary: In which Thor’s primary problem-solving method (a mighty blow from Mjolnir) fails to have the desired effect on a magical artifact, and his secondary method (a mightier blow from Mjolnir) proves to be actively disastrous.

Bodyswap hijinks with fun team interaction and a cool plot. The ending veered a teensy bit close to Loki apologism for my taste but still, I thoroughly enjoyed this story, including kid!Loki.

Leverage:
with your progress stretched out for miles by [livejournal.com profile] abvj
Sophie/Nate; genre: backstory/character study/romance; PG-13; 30,353 words
Summary: Sophie Devereaux from age eleven onward. Some years were better to her than others. (Or, alternatively: my love letter to Sophie Devereaux.)

A beautiful character study that does these messed-up characters and their far-from-fairytale relationship justice.

MI4: Ghost Protocol
The Runner by [archiveofourown.org profile] x_art
Brandt/Ethan, Benji, Jane; Rating ~R; 15681 words
“As I was saying, I was just joking.”
Ethan gave him a long, searching look. “And I’m not. This is the mission, should you—”
He waved away the words. “Yeah, yeah, yeah.” He knew his big mouth would get him into trouble sooner or later, but sooner seemed a hell of a lot, well, sooner.

Anybody got recs for humor team fic? I don't read Natasha or Clint paired with other characters or Loki/anyone - other than that I'm a happy multishipper, and Gen's of course great too. Also looking for Fury and Hill. (I can't wait till AO3 becomes tag-searchable.)

Avengers:
the highest reaches of human endeavor by [livejournal.com profile] kuhori_rei
Natasha/Clint; NC-17; 2450 words
Summary: Clint and Natasha are never awkward. Except for when they are. (Or, five times Clint and Natasha screw up during sex, and one time they really just don’t care.)

MI4: Ghost Protocol:
Countdown by [archiveofourown.org profile] Desdemon
William Brandt/Ethan Hunt and team; spy antics with kissing; 2761 words
The mission is not just politically sensitive, or personally dangerous - it also sounds so crazy that Brandt would suspect a practical joke if Ethan didn’t seem like the kind of guy who would just murder whoever he was irritated with instead. There’s an Iranian prince’s body double, one half of the recipe for a chemical weapon, a train hand-off in Kazakhstan, and a Dutch contact of Ethan's whom Brandt is expected to meet with in fourteen hours. In the Netherlands. Oh, and a guaranteed international incident should any of them get caught.

But it doesn’t matter. Brandt said yes, and he knows that if Ethan asks him for anything else, he’ll say yes to that, too.

Unusuals:
Laid Bare by [archiveofourown.org profile] Zinnith
Gen; PG-13; characters: Casey & Jason; genre: Partnership, h/c; 2236 words
Summary: "Look, Beaumont, it's just the flu and he's a grown man--I don't think you need someone to watch him during your shift."
"Casey--just get over here. I'll explain when you get here."

Two time loop fics:
A Year of Wednesdays by [archiveofourown.org profile] tuesday (The A-Team)
Murdock/B.A. and team; Rating: mature; Genre: time loop; 5517 words
Summary: Murdock has super powers! Or he is stuck in a time loop. Maybe both!
Face smiled in that not-really-reassuring way he had and said, "Things'll look better in the morning." It wasn't anything he hadn't said forty times before, wasn't any more or less patronizing than a hundred other ways he'd tried to sympathize with the bad days and utterly failed.
Murdock punched him right in the jaw.

The Shortest Week by [archiveofourown.org profile] shinysylver (Avengers movieverse)
Gen; characters: Tony, Steve, Thor, Fury; time loop; 15375 words
Summary: It doesn’t take Tony long to realize that he’s stuck in a time loop, doomed to relive the same crappy day over and over again. Every day he wakes up hung over—whether or not he drinks—has to deal with giant robots and, even worse, a pissed off Captain America. Tony has to figure out how to stop the cycle before he goes crazy and in the process maybe he and Steve can come to an understanding.

A belated yuletide treat for the Mrs. Pollifax fans here: a ficlet that captures the charm of the books.
Mrs. Pollifax and the Family Connection by [archiveofourown.org profile] anenko (Mrs. Pollifax books)
Gen; Characters: Emily Pollifax, Roger Pollifax, Bishop; 1016 words

And so it was on a snowy December afternoon that Mrs. Pollifax's separate worlds collided, very politely, in her kitchen around a plate of blueberry muffins.

Leveraging the Odds by LadyArin (Leverage/Hunger Games)
8108 words; Gen; characters: Nate, Sophie, Eliot, Hardison, Parker

I was sceptical (though naturally intrigued) when I read the premise - the Leverage characters transplanted into the Hunger Games world - but I really like the result. Interesting crossover which makes good use of the specific character traits.

During the last two days I got no work done. Zero. But I went outdoor bouldering yesterday and then I met an English native speaker at a friend's place; it was fun to chat in English again. So I consider that day seized, if not exactly productive. And today... well, I just now mastered the art of frying eggplant slices. Yes: I've achieved that elusive stage between raw and burnt. They were tasty.
But not much to show for my day. It's 11pm... still time to get started on the next page, I guess.
At least I finished another page of sketches on Thursday, and more importantly I'm finally getting a feeling for the book. So I'm making slow but steady progress.
[eta: 23:44 now... yeah, not looking good on the productivity front]

What is it with Hunger Games fanfic? Either I've been lucky in my picks or the fic is just exceptionally good. (Also depressing and abundant with character death, which is why I don't read too much in that fandom.)

Here's another AU of the first book with an intriguing what-if scenario (what if Rue had survived the attack?) which invariably leads to a lot of hard choices.

Zero Sum by Ember A. Keelty
6,824 words; Gen; AU; warning: violence and character death
Summary: Rue survives the District 1 boy's attack. For Katniss, this turns out to be horribly inconvenient.

Still I Rise by [archiveofourown.org profile] Mizzy (Hunger Games)
AU; 20,042 words; mostly Gen with a hint of K/P; Characters: Katniss, Haymitch, Peeta, Prim, Finnick, Johanna
Summary: Katniss didn't use the proper protocol for volunteering to take Prim's place. Her plea was denied.
So Katniss has no choice. No one has ever broken out of the Hunger Games arena before ...but maybe Katniss can be the first to break
in.

Very compelling, fast-moving AU!

Digital Illustration Tutorial by [deviantart.com profile] jdillon82 (17 pages, pdf for download)
I'm still trying to get the hang of digital illustration and this tutorial, on first readthrough, seems to offer a lot of useful advice.

last-minute addendum, because in honor of the Hermione/Leslie race [personal profile] thingswithwings wrote crossover fic.
In which Leslie is the first female president of the US and Hermione is her liaison to the wizard world.
Diplomatic Relations (Parks and Recreation/Harry Potter)
Leslie/Hermione; rating: M for makeouts; 4459 words
Summary: Five days after her inauguration, President Knope receives a visitor.

To the Victor, The Spoil by [archiveofourown.org profile] Annakovsky (The Hunger Games)
Katniss/Haymitch; NC-17; characters: Katniss, Haymitch, Finnick, Cinna; 13,360 words
Hightlight to read warnings; spoilers for books 2/3: Prostitution, possibly underage sex (Katniss is 17)
Summary (spoilers for the end of book 1): No berries, no mockingjay, no rebellion. Katniss killed Peeta in the arena, and now she has to live with herself like every other victor.

Not a happy fic... it's relentlessley honest and bleak (even bleaker than the books, I thought) and after reading it I needed a lighthearted story as an antidote. But it was incredibly captivating, really well written.

Been checking compulsively to see if one of the Leverage WIPs I'm following has updated. I'm really in the mood for a new teamy casefic. *twitches* Think I'll reread an old teamy casefic for the cravings. ;)

Foxglove by [archiveofourown.org profile] Annwyd (The Hunger Games)
Gen; characters: Cinna, Finnick; backstory; Spoilers for books 2/3; 4000 words
Summary: A twist in life and the Games changes the way Cinna sees the world forever. Just how did he come to ask for District 12, anyway?

Very plausible backstory, beautifully written. Just what I was looking for when I searched for fic that tells more about Cinna's story and his motivations.

I forgot who on my circle it was that recced the Hunger Games trilogy the other days but, thank you. :) I stayed up till half past five last night and finished book one. It's probably a good thing that book two is still in the mail because I'd like to get some actual drawing done today...

(I'm 100% unspoiled beyond book one so please no one tell me anything!)

Oh, and here's the Leverage/Hunger Games fusion that finally prompted me to order the book. The fic gives just enough of an idea of the world of THG to pique ones curiosity without spoiling the plot of the books.

superpower by [archiveofourown.org profile] Birdhouse
558 words; characters: Nathan Ford; Genre: AU
Summary: At first they think he's no threat at all...

"Incredibly, chance does seem to bend itself to his bizarre mechinations..."
"That's his superpower."

Anne and George of the Thirds by [archiveofourown.org profile] lilacsigil (Famous Five - Enid Blyton)
Gen; George & Ann (& Timmy); 7878 words
Summary: George's first term at school promises to be a tumultuous one.

A thoughtful background story for George. I like how this fic deals with things like gender roles more in-depth that you could ever hope to find in Blyton's books, but not in a heavy-handed way that would drown the story.

There's a real authentic feel to it. She got the style of the books down pat, too!

I ordered book one of The Hunger Games. I've seen it mentioned so often recently that I'm really curious now. I just wish they were here already, I'm suddenly in the mood for a juicy novel. The weather is awful, I've gone bouldering a bit but it's a slippery wet mess out there.

Inner Beauty, My Arse by [livejournal.com profile] anguis_1 (Harry Potter)
Dudley/Luna; PG-13; 5,039 words
Summary: Missing the year prior to sitting one’s A-levels would have been quite difficult for a student of average ability, but for a student of Dudley’s calibre, it was downright disastrous.

Written for [livejournal.com profile] dudley_redeemed, the story does a convincing job of doing just that - not through a magic instant fix-it, but by showing the changes he goes through over time. I stumbled across this fic by coincidence and really enjoyed it.

comment fic: Solving the Debt Crisis (Parks & Rec)

Attention, Shoppers by [personal profile] amand_r (Highlander)
Characters: Methos, Amanda, Duncan. Joe, OCs; Mostly Gen with a touch of M/A/D; 10,765 words; Humor
Summary: Rollback in aisle three: gemstones, cheap liquor and pickaxes.

The story of how three immortals end up working at Walmart in order to case the joint. Methos' narrative voice alone is worth the price of admission here.

I skipped a lot of days of recs recently, but to make up for it I have a really long one today, and it's a page-turner:
At Your Service by [livejournal.com profile] faithwood (Harry Potter)
96,000 words; Harry/Draco and ensemble; NC-17; mystery/action/romance
Summary: Hogwarts students are in danger; Harry is determined to save them all. There's only one thing he knows for certain: Draco Malfoy is somehow involved.

The story is set after the end of book 7; Harry and his yearmates are briefly back at Hogwarts to finish their final exams, but they soon get sidetracked by inexplicable goings-on that threaten the students. I recommend this fic also for those who otherwise don't ship Harry/Draco. The mystery is complex, extremely well plotted and has a satisfying conclusion. And as a mainly gen reader I really liked the way the Harry/Draco part of the story developed and meshed with the rest of the plot.

Oh, it's stopped raining! I can finally go running. Maybe I'll make it home dry, even. ;)

yuletide rec: A Stingray fic! Not the puppet series, the 80s show about the mysterious ninja vigilante who helps people in exchange for a future favor which he uses to help other people. I'd forgotten how much I was into that show. And there seems to be virtually no fic so this story was even more of a surprise treat.

For Barter Only by [archiveofourown.org profile] AnDelenDir (Stingray)
Gen-ish; characters: Daphne Delgado, Ray; 1188 words
Summary: Daphne Delgado is a judge now, but when she is asked about a stranger who noted down her name for barter she is intrigued.
