astridv: ("Synth" Hellbound; icon by Yoon Ha Lee)
Saturday, March 24th, 2007 02:10 pm
Well, it took a little while, but it's finally done. :o)

"Synth" is a crossover between AtS and Fray. ('Fray', for those who haven't read it yet, is a well-crafted tale, written by Joss Whedon himself, with gorgeous artwork by Karl Moline. In my opinion it's hands down the best of the Whedonverse comics out there, not to be missed!)

This comic is also a follow-up of sorts to [livejournal.com profile] yhlee's fic Radio Free. It is pretty much self-contained so should make sense even if you're unfamiliar with 'Fray' and 'Radio Free'. All you need to know is that in the aftermath of "Not Fade Away," Angel and Gunn are swept via dimensional slide into the future world of Fray, where there is only one Slayer (Melaka Fray) and Haddyn (once Manhattan) is divided deeply between the haves in the "uppers" and the have-nots in the warrens.

Disclaimer: AtS belongs to Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy, and Fox. Fray belongs to Joss Whedon. Joss is our master. This is an unofficial and unauthorized fan comic, no money is being made. Unless you all rush off to Amazon to buy "Fray", which you should, in which case someone somewhere will make some money (but not us).

The look of Fray's world and its denizens is loosely based on the designs that Karl Moline developed for 'Fray', but I didn't want to cling too closely to the source there.

Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] tkp for the invaluable beta, and to Birgit and Steffi, my favorite housemates, who provided many helpful comments. Dedicated to [livejournal.com profile] makd, for being a good ghost of the fandom. :)

For those with a slow web connection: here is the comic split into six parts (each part still about 700 KB...):
page 1-2, page 3-4, page 5-6, page 7-8, page 9-10, page 11-12

So, page 8 still isn't quite done yet... instead I finished page 12, page 11 is probably next. In other words, I've given up on the whole working in sequence idea. It's just not my thing. Instead I'll post the whole comic in one soon as all the remaining five pages are done.

But if you'd like a little preview, here's page 12. It's unlettered but it is the final page, so still somewhat spoilerish; you might wanna give it a pass. I'm just too impatient to let a finished page sit on my hard drive for a few weeks without showing even a few people. (Just don't link to it.)

I might still modify some of the colors later, when I'm doing the lettering.

I just looked through my back posts... I started drawing this comic about four months ago, aiming for two pages a months. With seven pages done, it looks like I'm gonna finish it this year as planned. I might even be able to contain it in eleven pages instead of the projected twelve, depends on how well I can get the final panels to fit on one page. Right now the ending seems a little rushed if I do that but we'll see. Anyway, more than halfway done. :)

Yay, I finally found a paper where the ink doesn't bleed, so the lettering will go much more smoothly now. I'd tried drawing board, everything. Who knew that old HP inkjet paper would be useful for something.

Yo. Page four is finally finished. Page five is finished too, as a matter of fact... but I had the moderately brilliant idea to try lettering on a separate sheet. I thought it might save time. (It doesn't.) So, the next page might take until tomorrow, depending on how fast the lettering goes.

In the meantime, here's page four, this time with 100% more colour. And with words! )

I've also reposted the first three, in better quality and with a few details fixed:

After going on and on about my taxes, some comic pages for a change. Beware, this is a WIP; I'll later go back and change details, so these are just preliminary, low res scans with minimal editing [eta better scan of p3]. I hope the picture quality is good enough to make the text on page four readable (I just scribbled it in, if it's too sloppy to read, yell...)

This one's a crossover between AtS and Fray. ('Fray' deserves its own separate recs post, really - it's a well-crafted tale, written by Joss himself, with gorgeous artwork. In my opinion it's hands down the best of the Whedonverse comics out there, not to be missed.)

On with the show )
