Academy Award Winning Movie Trailer
Summary: Every Best Picture Nomination Ever.
Clever, funny and very meta. High production value too - it really looks like the real thing.

(Plus, one of the rare Youtube videos where the comments section is worth reading...)

I'd like to post another rec but I don't have my trusty bookmarks folder... hm.

Oh! First thing off the top of my head is this six-part series I found on Youtube, created by the makers of The Wire and starring many of the same actors as well: The Corner. It's based on real events, about the life of an inner city family in the drug scene of Baltimore, and it's even more raw and gritty than The Wire. The actors are all amazing, but Khandi Alexander as Fran in particular is just, so good. I highly recommend this for all Wire fans.

Posting from rainy Mülheim, where I'm visiting my dad. Earlier this year I made the decision to try at least one new thing whenever I'm in the area - since the Ruhr area has a lot to offer, culturally and also in terms of, heh, climbing. Today I checked out the Citymonkey bouldering hall, which turned out to be a great idea. It's easy to reach, cozy and has a lot more variety than our boulder at home... dozens of routes in my range, I couldn't even try all of them. Definitely something to keep in mind for my next visit.

Thanks to everybody here who posted about Gravity and insisted you have to see this movie on the big screen: I just watched it in 3D and it was absolutely amazing - exciting and also strangely beautiful. And a lot more scary than, for example, Aliens or Prometeus which I watched only a week ago... seriously, who needs Aliens? Space is fucking scary!

The special effects were so convincing that they never at any point registered as fx. The illusion was perfect. I'd like to watch a Behind The Scenes because I have no clue how they did it.

Unrelated: I'm suddenly really in the mood to read Agents of SHIELD fic and I think I've read everything there is that even remotely fits my tastes.
*twitch* I've gotten used to instant gratification, fanfic-wise.
Well, still have 7 pages of unread fic on my Kindle...

Okay, since it seems there are at least two other Chuck fans here (*waves*) I'm doing the fic rec compilation thing.
20 recs so far, sorted by length with longer fic listed at the top; mostly gen or canon pairings, and a couple crossovers.

I compiled all my Leverage recs to date in this post for convenience's sake. Over 100 recs at the moment... lots of genfic, a good number of Sophie/Nate, and a handful of other pairing combinations. Also a couple of vid recs. Enjoy. :o)

To further celebrate my newly discovered multifannishness: 10 recs from 10 fandoms.
fic recs:
It's All So Clear to Me Now by [livejournal.com profile] fools_game (Leverage)
PG; Parker POV, background Alec/Eliot and Nate/Sophie
Summary: Parker sees more than some people think.
Strong team/family vibe, great Parker voice!
The first time she fell asleep at Hardison’s she woke up scared out of her brain and nearly took Eliot’s eye when he came to wake her. Because she’d fallen asleep on the couch, and when she woke up she was in an unfamiliar bed, under the blankets, with no shoes on. She’d fallen asleep with other people around. They’d moved her while she slept, and she hadn’t noticed, hadn’t even stirred, and she freaked so hard she was fleeing through the lobby before she realised she was barefoot, and then she had to go back up to get her shoes. Alec gave her coffee as she walked gingerly back in, and there was an omelette waiting for her, and Eliot was hardly smirking at all, so she stayed for breakfast.
Come at the King by VanaTuivana (The Wire)
m/m; PG-13; Omar Little, with cameos from De’Londa Brice, baby!Namond, and Bird; pre-canon; 2,655 words
Summary: Omar Little be who he be, and ain't nobody come at him.
While seaching for Namond fic I instead found this gem and got sucked in from the very first line. Very compelling character study!

Ordo ad Fratres Faciendum by [personal profile] sholio (SGA)
(x-posted from genrec); PG-13; Ronon, Rodney, John, Teyla, Torren; set late S.5; 20,800 words;
Summary: A jumper crash separates the team on a wilderness planet, and they aren't alone.
"So. You and Ronon."
Rodney looked up from the video game console. "Wow, subtle."
"Are you guys, uh ..." John gestured with the game controller. He wasn't sure whether to finish with okay or fighting or capable of working together or what, so he just let it trail off into silence, though when Rodney's eyes went wide John realized that he might ought to have been a little more specific.
"We're not sleeping together, Sheppard."
"I didn't think you were!" Although it would, come to think of it, explain a few things.
Daily Mechanics by [livejournal.com profile] bravenewcentury (Fullmetal Alchemist)
gen; PG; Winry, Paninya;
Summary: There's a lot to get used to in a new town.
Winry and Paninya, making new lives for themselves in Rush Valley. Great friendship fic.

vid recs
Who Needs Enemies by theanonsisters (Deep Space Nine)
gen; Julian Bashir and others
Summary: Who needs enemies when you've got friends.
Smooth, elegantly cut, and most of all complex. Hm, kind of like the good doctor himself. :)

A Tall Tale by [profile] maichan808 (Big Fish (movie))
Summary: It's not the story, it's how you tell it...
Incredibly evocative of the movie. I had a major emotional response to this vid and looking at the comments I'm not the only one. Can't even put my finger on the mechanics of it.

Teal'c P.I. by Nibikko (SG-1)
summary: Teal'c's suggestion to Martin Lloyd in episode "200" for a Jaffa detective television series comes to life in this fan video.
Heee... pure glee in vid form!

Save Chuck (Chuck)
This is great fun to watch. It uses footage throughout the first three seasons but cut so out of context that it's practically spoiler free. I can imagine it'd make a really nice recruiter vid. Sooo... if you're curious and have no idea what the show is about, check out this vid to get an idea?
(And I can't get enough of that soundtrack, even though it gets used a *lot* in fanvids).

One Piece MMV (One Piece)
Don't know the story, but I like the effective way the manga panels are used to convey movement and time flow. And I really like the mood created by the pics and the soundtrack. Very interesting.

fanart rec
Doctor Hoo by pu-sama (Doctor Who)
All the doctors... as owls. Cute & pretty. The funny thing is, even though I never watched the show I recognized some of them, through fannish osmosis.

fanart rec: [personal profile] spiritcoda made a Teyla Calendar that I can't stop staring at. Every month has a different feel, all really capture her attitude and spirit.

vid rec: Following a dozen recs I recently started watching Princess Tutu. It's an interesting show (though it doesn't come close to the only other anime I know, Fullmetal Alchemist. I have a feeling few manga/anime will come close to FMA for me).

Theres an AMV that's apparently become a major recruitment tool for this anime, and in fact it's what got me so curious that I started watching the show. It's really compelling.
Hold Me Now by Marissa Panaccio

This anime has a few things that I just don't get, like her strange ballet teacher Neko-sensei and his obsession with marriage, also her emotionally abusive girlfriends... both of which elements I suspect I'm supposed to find funny but to me they're just, argh, inappropriate. But the show also has moments of astonishing poetry; it explores themes of fate vs free will, mixing German fairy tales with ballet themes, set to a beautiful soundtrack of classical music that fits really well. The ending of episode three brought actual tears to my eyes. (I'm halfway through S2 so no spoilers for the end please...)

[personal profile] rahirah wrote down a history of the Buffy wank fandom. And behold, it was hilarious: And y'know, that's just Spike fandom.

Which reminds me of a hankering I've been having ever since I read that Angel: After the Fall issue that has Kate and Connor meeting over fighting demons in post-apocalyptic L.A. Such a cool premise, and man, that comic did so little with it. Isn't there anybody out there in fandomland who has the burning desire to write this scenario? Possibly throwing Angel into the mix and have a bit of Angel&Connor bonding and Angel/Kate grudgy-friendship-with-UST, too? *puppy look*

^ I'll just throw that prompt out there and call it My Holiday Wish List. ;)
[eta: I'm still mostly unfamiliar with comic canon so I wouldn't mind if it went AU after S5.]

pimpage: [community profile] fanart_recs is a new(ish) comm for, well, fanart recs. You can sign up for one month to rec four fanart works in one fandom. Check it out, there have been some great pieces linked already. Like this one (AtLA (which I still haven't watched)). When I'm not familiar with a source I find myself a lot more willing to check out fanart than fic... takes just a click and a look, after all. I'm gonna rec Fullmetal Alchemist in December.

xposted from genrec: End of the World by [personal profile] penknife (SGA)
gen; PG-13?; an episode tag ficlet for "Enemy at the Gate" (288 words)
Ronon's thoughts about Earth, about his friends and the end of the world. It's sparse and efficient, one of those ficlets that say a lot in just a few hundred words. Really beautiful.

Four Times Chuck Was a Hero By Being Nerdy by [livejournal.com profile] dotfic (Chuck)
Gen, PG (preseries-early season two); 2,200 words
What it says on the can. Quintessential Chuck: nerdy and heroic. <3

Chuck vs The Middle by flash-faker (Chuck)
gen-Chuck/Sarah/Casey pre-OT3; Rating: T; warning: some descriptions of gore; 24,255 words
Chuck's resilience in the field is tested, and Casey and Sarah have some decisions to make.
I saved this under INSTA-rec and then Work happened and I couldn't write my rec while the fic was still fresh in my mind. Anyway, it's one of those stories I had to read in one because I didn't want to stop, not because of non-stop action (it's character-driven though the background plot is solid) but because the character's inner life is just that gripping. I really like how the author gets into their heads and where she takes the characters.

FMA meta rec: [livejournal.com profile] rawles wrote a really great post on Roy & Riza, on subtext and canon. (link)

FMA fanart rec:
TheOnlyWayIsDeath on DA made an Envy Motivational Poster that alternately cracks me up and makes me go Aww (and then slap myself for going Aww because, seriously, it's Envy!)
Spoilers for chapter 80 and up.

Driven by the desire to subsidize both Amazon and FedEx, I preordered Shounen Gangan. The shipping fee is outrageous but I just don't want to read the final chapter on a screen. (final chapter, waaah) I really dislike reading fiction on the computer. And it's a one time thing, so I figure I indulge. I just hope shipping really takes only a few days... once the chapter is out I'm not going online until I've read it.

a SGA fic I very much enjoyed:
Germination by [personal profile] thingswithwings
Jennifer/Rodney; kink: tentacles!; post-ep for 502 The Seed; words: 5600

It's interesting: the other day someone, I think friendshipper, said that her major story kink is to be surprised (or something like that) and that felt about right. It's why I prefer story warnings that are hidden behind spoiler tags.

I've noticed that after almost three years of reading in this fandom my plot kinks have largely been satisfied - I still enjoy reading them, but right now the kind of story that really hits the spot is one that goes somewhere unexpected, no matter how... by going wildly AU, or developing a minor character or pairing, or turning a common cliche inside out.*

And that's what this fic does, too: it takes some tropes and themes and does something different with them. It's sweet and funny, and her Jennifer voice is spot on. And, well, I can never get enough of well-written Jennifer/Rodney. :)

*That's also why propinquitine's fic Never Quite What You Expect was one of my favorite stories of the entire last year even though it's a pairing I generally feel I overdosed on.

I colored five pages today, working pretty much all day long. Coloring is weirdly exhausting. I sketched the entire book in five days, and inked it in four and still had plenty of time to goof off. But coloring, once again, takes forever. And I'd almost forgotten what it's like to work against a deadline. I must say, I haven't missed that. Must make sure to plan future projects so that I have plenty of air. Anyway, only eleven more pages to go. Maybe I'll be done in three days.

I have so many links I want to post - read a lot of great fic! - but I'm too tired. So just a quick SGA fanart rec for now:

My to-link bookmark folder has accumulated so many links that I have to scroll to get to the newest ones, which means it's time for a spring cleaning. I'm listing a bunch of them in this post to make space. These are all links I found interesting for one reason or other. I'm saving the longer fic for proper recs, but I'm listing a couple of shorter fics.meta/politics )fic recs (nuTrek, SGA) )fanart (general, SPN) )

Run, don't walk over to Deviantart: jdillon82 is a fantastic artist and has done a digital painting of Ronon that is smoking hot and badass and totally captures the character. (The rest of their gallery is original art, most definitely worth a look. Gorgeous coloring throughout.)

Check out this squeeworthy SGA art that [livejournal.com profile] with_apostrophe made for the handmade meme... Atlantis windows cross-stitch. The idea is great and the result looks really gorgeous.

Found via cakewrecks, who sometimes post pics of non-wrecks... TARDIS cake. Now, I'm not a Dr Who fan, I have only the vaguest idea what the TARDIS is, but this is one cool cake. And bigger on the inside.

Part 2 of my recs master list got too long as well, so I give you: Part 3.
About 50 recs in this post. Sorted by length. A lot of gen (mostly team, also character-centric: Rodney, Jennifer, Ronon, Teyla, Aidan, John). Also McShep, Rodney/Teyla, Rodney/Jennifer, and Sam/Rodney. (As to these last three pairings, I'm always looking for recs myself!)

Me and the roommates are in need of movie recs for Buffynight. Well, we still call it Buffynight but we ran out of first Angel and then Buffy episodes well over a year ago. Now it's basically Movie Night, on which two of us cook a nice dinner while the other two get a movie. The food is the easy part.

We saw some fantastic movies already (I should really have made notes for a recs list... some of those, like The Prestige, I had no expectations for and was really pleasantly surprised.) I could use some recs, so: What are your, say, three favorite movies? The ones you'd bring on the desert island (if the desert island had electricity)?

And while I'm here, I'm snagging the Ask Me Anything meme I just saw at [livejournal.com profile] kradical:
ask me anything you want in the comments. I shall answer as best as I can though I'll reserve the right to skip questions.

Teyla fanart by [personal profile] lim
Lim is one of the most original, versatile fanartists I know, keen to experiment. This here is a woodcut-like Photoshop manip, with a sorta art nouveau look that blends well with the ancient script that's used as background. Cool effect, and the result looks gorgeous.

Well, I finished another comic page. But it's the one that has the epilogue. It's usually at this stage of a comic that my plan to work chronologically flies out the window.

speaking of comic, I bought #7 of Angel - After the Fall, because I heard that my two absolute favorite characters (after Angel) are in it: Kate and Connor meet over fighting demons in post-apocalyptic L.A... I love that idea! And now I really wish someone would write that fanfic, because the comic was little more than setup and only good to whet the appetite.Read more... )

On Wednesday there's going to be an tour at the botanical garden to watch the Queen of the Night blossom. I'm kind of excited. :) I've never seen one before. I just hope the queen keeps to the schedule. Good timing that there's gonna be no French class this Wednesday, due to Pentecost.

For the same reason, all the Xerox places will be closed tomorrow. That's less fortunate timing. That puts a crink in my work schedule... I'd totally forgotten about this holiday and I can't do the color work I need to do without being able to print my drawings onto the watercolor paper.

fanart rec:
A Knife for A Life by [livejournal.com profile] berlinghoff79
Gen; Characters: Dex. Ronon Dex. Plus team
Medium: Photo Manip/Movie Poster
Very shiny and squeeful with a generous dose of irony. Love all the little details.

I'm so happy our Jennifer-Teyla comic is getting such great feedback.
... (There is really no innocuous way to draw a tentacle, is there? :D)

I had almost no fic-reading time these past days, between work, the comic, French class, and finally watching Star Trek: The Reboot. ([livejournal.com profile] friendshipper's post pretty much matches my own reaction, so... *links*.) ([livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63 has a Star Trek comment fic fest going on here, with prompts for every taste.)

anyway, for those waiting for more genficathon recs, right now I'm reading Where the White Lilies Grow, an AU I saw recced by Sholio and Ratcreature, I think, and I'm not very far in yet but the beginning is *very* intriguing. So intriguing that I want to work extra-speedy today so I can get back to it quickly.

I've started to read more and more on DW now, and I'm really liking this site. I already noticed several improvements to LJ's code, stuff that used to annoy me that's now gone. Not to mention the increased post and comment length. And it's barely noticable that the site is still in beta. (Though I hope they have their reading filters available soon.) The way I'm handling it now is that every time I notice someone crossposting all their content between LJ and DW, I'm taking them off my LJ filters so I don't get double posts. That seems to work quite well.

I created that second journal under my last name which I will make into a gallery for my non-fannish art. I can't wait to try and fiddle with the CSS to make that journal presentable (right now CSS still looks very cryptic to me but I figured out the Perl code for our Buffy archive, so how hard can it be to make a stylesheet...?)

fancomic rec:
My friend [livejournal.com profile] jwaneeta has drawn a three-page Iron Man comic. It's a classic h/c scene with very cool artwork (she's a pro comic artist) and it made me aww even though I don't know one of the characters...

Coda by [livejournal.com profile] jwaneeta
fandom: Marvel; Steve/Tony; h/c, fluff; post-Red Zone; 3 pages, full color

(Can you imagine what she'd do in SGA? I mean!)

[livejournal.com profile] sga_genficathon has started posting a few days ago and of course I've already hopelessly fallen behind in my reading but I plan to read all the fic. The ones I have read so far have been fantastic. They're posting three stories a day over two weeks, go check it out!

I'm taking some time away from fic reading each week to read one French comic. That's my preparation for French class: one BD per week. I figured, rather then cramming down grammar and vocab, I'd go for the painless way. :) Works pretty well too, but those weeks just fly by, man! You blink and it's Wednesday again.

Hey, I learned how to link usernames so they don't show up as Dreamwidth user when I'm crossposting. (instead of lj user, type user name=[username] site=livejournal.com)
