Fair Play by [archiveofourown.org profile] Penknife
Gen; Vala, Teal'c and team; humor/friendship; teen; 2987 words
Summary: Five times Vala and Teal'c didn't play by the rules.

I'm gonna be vacation and Internet access's gonna be spotty for the next three weeks so Rec of the Day is going on summer hiatus...

Five Ways Daniel Proposed to Vala by 6beforelunch (SG-1)
Funny, adorable (and also, in one case, sad) proposal scenarios... #5 is my favorite, it's hilarious.

The First Cut Is the Deepest by [archiveofourown.org profile] dsudis (SG-1)
Gen; G; Teal'c and team; humor/character study; 955 words
Summary: The Tau'ri's paper was as unexpectedly dangerous as they were themselves. Teal'c raised his eyebrows, impressed.

I thought I'd rec'd this fic already but apparently I haven't. I just saw it pop up on my flist and was reminded how much I like it... Dira can take a prosaic event like Teal'c getting a paper cut and weave it into a character study that's both touching and funny. Teal'c is one of my favorite characters on SG-1 and this fic kinda shows why.

Men in Stiff Procession by [livejournal.com profile] vain_glorious (SGA/SG-1)
Gen; PG-13; 21,000 words
Summary: A new military commander, Cameron Mitchell, arrives on Atlantis. AU from the middle of "Inquisition" 5X13

The Trio In The Temple by Seldear / [personal profile] tielan (Bones/SG-1)
Gen | PG-13 | characters: Temperance Brennan, Sam Carter | Mystery/Adventure | 11,337 words
Summary: When Brennan is called in to examine a trio of bodies, she discovers a mystery that stymies even her. Who are these three people and what interest does Colonel Sam Carter have in them?

A most excellent crossover, with a great Brennan voice... and a mystery. One the gentle reader already knows the solution of, but watching Brennan put together puzzle pieces that form an impossible picture is great fun to read.
(This fic is based on the SG-1 two-parter "Moebius" so might not make as much sense if you haven't seen those episodes.)

Doppelgänger by [livejournal.com profile] aelfgyfu_mead (SG-1/Chuck)
gen; G; crossover, humor; ~ 8600 words
summary: Casey is thrilled to head a mission once again, even if it involves impersonating some lowlife Ring agent who looks a lot like him. This Dave Dixon guy will never know what hit him.

Heeey! I finished book #2. I still have to scan everything and format it, and I'll probably be getting a couple corrections for this one, but still... mostly done, with about a week to spare. \o/ And once it's turned in I'll have a whole month to work on my own projects - I have an idea for a kids' book that I think has a lot of potential, fingers crossed. And there's the comic thing. (And I gotta do my bookkeeping.) (And my taxes.) Hopefully some fanart. And post recs.

Uh, also, thanks to all the folks on my flist who brought Leverage to my attention. I had a feeling I'd love the show when I watched The Rashomon Job. That ep got me so curious that I started watching from the beginning and yup, totally love it. The characters are fantastic, and I always had a thing for heist stories. I'm only about six or seven eps in but I might be looking for fic recs later on. :)

It's funny, I used to be the typical fandom serial monogamist, but all of a sudden I'm multifannish? That's new; I kinda like it. Think I'll celebrate a job (hopefully) well done with an ep of Leverage, followed by a Chuck fic and a few pages from my new FMA doujinshi.

In this vein, a couple of multi-fandom recs:
Wait in the Van by Aelfgyfu (Chuck/White Collar)
gen; humor; 6,000 words
Summary: Peter kept telling Neal to wait in the van. Was it Neal's fault he didn't specify which one?
I don't actually know White Collar, but the story worked really well for me. If you're a Chuck fan, all you gotta know is that Neal is played by the same actor who plays Bryce Larkin and you're good to go.

Hyperion by Marcus Rowland (The Saint (novels)/BtVS)
Summary: The 1940s Saint pays a visit to Los Angeles and the Hyperion Hotel.
I'm reccing this fic and its two sequels, all Buffy crossovers. Marcus does a great job linking the two canons... not a small feat, since they're set in different periods in time.

Bigger on the Inside by [livejournal.com profile] sentientcitizen (Doctor Who/SG1/SGA)
gen; PG; ~700 words
Summary: Everyone says the same thing when they see the TARDIS for the first time. Well. Ish.
Various SG characters see the TARDIS for the fist time. Hilarious!

A Girl Worth Fighting For by [livejournal.com profile] bookelfe (FMA)
gen; PG; Characters: Approximately every Armstrong in canon, and some I just made up; ~4,600 words
Summary: An argument among the Armstrong children is resolved with a history lesson. written for [livejournal.com profile] fma_ladyfest

I love this fic to bits. Amestrian history, elegantly combined with the sparkly awesomeness that is the Armstrong family. It doesn't get any better. (I feel like I should write this rec in sparkle font.)

A Reasonable Facsimile (Chuck)
Characters: Morgan Grimes, General Beckman, and a boatload of sketchy OC's
Spoilers for 4x01; gen; PG; epidode tag, humor; 2600 words

This is delightful, funny and just the right amount of cracky. And it's perfectly in character, both for Morgan and for the show.

Easy Listening by [livejournal.com profile] emungere (Chuck)
gen; PG; Chuck & Casey; spoilers for 1x06; short
Killing Chuck is not an option. Not. An. Option. He has that written on a post-it stuck to his bathroom mirror, so it must be true.

some more Casey:
Knitting by Innie (Chuck)
gen with background Ellie/Devon; short
Summary: Casey gets roped in.
Yeah, so they're civilians, and he's sworn to protect them, but now that he's met them, he isn't so sure that he really would take a bullet for them. They're so wide-eyed and trusting, so full of enthusiasm and high-fives, treating him like he belonged in their weird little family. It's damn unsettling.
For [community profile] remixduello [personal profile] amaresu submitted The one where Jack and Vala ended up on Fandom Wank, which prompted this remix by [personal profile] beatrice_otter: A Collection of E-mails from the SGC Archives (the Wanky Wormhole Remix) (SG-1)
Vala writes Wormhole X-treme Danning/Levant badfic. Jack thinks it's OOC and says so online. Cam writes up the wank report. Teal'c provides screencaps (and gets one of the funniest lines I've read in fanfic). And the best thing is, it's all canon-compliant, if you want to squint. I love Wormhole X-treme.

Death by Fondue by [livejournal.com profile] ameretrifle (SGA)
gen; PG; humor; 1730 words
Summary: With the advantage of hindsight, John realized that he probably should've known something was wrong the first time he'd noticed he hadn't seen Rodney for more than five minutes. But it's a party, he'd thought. He's probably out there having fun, he'd thought. God, he must have been more drunk than he'd thought.

Thankfully this was recced on stargateficrec, because it was posted in 2007 and I somehow missed it until now. This is a really funny planetside fic with a number of great OCs.

x-posted from stargategenrec: untitled Sheppard-Caldwell ficlet by [personal profile] sholio (SGA)
gen; PG; Characters: John Sheppard, Stephen Caldwell, (Torren Emmagan); Spoilers: 5x01
I like how this scene shows the mutual respect and understanding that the two have developed over time.

Attack of the Cookie Monsters by Barb Cummings ([personal profile] rahirah)
Buffy/Spike & kids; PG
There are cookie monsters. They attack.
And the whole thing is illustrated. ♥

I'm sensing a theme here. Maybe I'm getting enough angst from my job and therefore need a lot of lighthearted, cracky fic for balance.

[livejournal.com profile] anenko wrote: meganbmoore posted a link to the most recent round of female character bashing. In my comment to her, I mentioned how happy I am that the people on my flist/DW circle love a wide variety of female-identified* characters.
Wouldn't it be great to find more people who feel the same way?
Is there a female character friending meme? If not, there totally should be.

And now there is: Female Character Friending Meme :)

In other news I have now learned the kanji for 'moustache' and for 'shave'. Fandom is nothing if not educational. *nods*

I have a fanart rec. Sorry, the link goes to Pixiv Read more... )

This fanart is on Deviantart: The Real Threat by Gimpyslair (FMA)
characters: Roy, Riza, Bradley, Olivier, Miles and Buccaneer
Gimpyslair has a whole bunch of FMA fan comics up, they're all worth checking out. This one cracked me up (and made me cackle evilly. Heh.)

fic recs:
Five Dangerous Things by Martha Wilson (SGA)
gen; PG-13; 3200 words
Five planets the Atlantis expedition won't go back to anytime soon

and for five planets SG-1 won't go back to anytime soon: Five mission reports written in 100 words or fewer: Brevity by [livejournal.com profile] penknife (comment fic)

by the same author: In Short
gen; PG; humor; ~1100 words
Summary: Twelve episode tags Penknife never wrote for SG-1 and SGA.
funny snarky meta, yum.

[personal profile] tielan posts about the upcoming SGA: Legacy novels here and also here and I gotta say, I haven't been this excited about SGA in months. It sounds like these books will be just what I'd been hoping for - all the things I loved about the show, plus many of the things I didn't get from the creators nor the fandom. I so hope they'll live up to my expectations!

Added benefit of those posts - I learned that there are Season 8 DS9 novels, and apparently they're good. I DID NOT KNOW THIS. Talk about being out of touch with the fandom. Due to recent posts on my friends list (thanks guys :) I've really gotten in the mood to revisit that fandom. I still think DS9 is one of the best tv shows ever made, and woefully underappreciated. (For an overview to whet the appetite read scrollgirl's post here.

Book is done. \o/ One or two more days to add details and check continuity, then it's finished. Gonna relax now with a big glass of red wine, the latest ep of FMA, and half a dozen fics.
Also, the weather has been very nice lately: I've been running and rollerblading a lot and that always leaves me with a happy buzz.
Finished illlos + red wine + rollerblading + new FMA ep + fic = really nice buzz. *smiles dopily*

fic recs:
Investigation by [livejournal.com profile] penknife (SG-1)
Summary: Investigation into the effects of zat'ni'ktel fire on the common Peep, by Samantha Carter

That was brilliant. I haven't read much SG-1 fic yet, but this fic makes me want to get into it more.

Notorious by [livejournal.com profile] bob_fish (FMA)
gen; PG-13; Characters: Madam Christmas; Roy Mustang (aged four), Grumman; ~3,500
Warnings: gangsters, innuendo, sleaze, dominoes and a lot of jazz age slang
Summary: Twenty-five years ago ... Chris Mustang is having a very bad month. The censors killed her show, she's in debt to a couple of very dubious businessmen, and she's working as a hostess in the worst bar in town. As if that wasn't enough, her estranged big brother seems to have gotten himself in an auto accident, and some nut decided to make her guardian of his four year old brat.

This is a really great piece of backstory for Madam Christmas and Roy Mustang. I'm not sure how it meshes with the mangaverse - I've yet to read the flashback chapters - but in any case it feels just right and it offers some great character backstory. I devoured this story. It's a satisfying exploration of a minor character.
