New Comic: Angel/Fray crossover (page 1-2 of 9? [eta: 12]), by yhlee and astridv

This one's a crossover between AtS and Fray. ('Fray' deserves its own separate recs post, really - it's a well-crafted tale, written by Joss himself, with gorgeous artwork. In my opinion it's hands down the best of the Whedonverse comics out there, not to be missed.)

This comic is also a follow-up of sorts to [livejournal.com profile] yhlee's fic Radio Free. It is pretty much self-contained so should make sense even if you're unfamiliar with 'Fray' and 'Radio Free'. All you need to know is that in the aftermath of "Not Fade Away," Angel and Gunn are swept via (handwave) "dimensional slide" into the future world of Fray, where there is only one Slayer (Melaka Fray) and Haddyn (once Manhattan) is divided deeply between the haves in the "uppers" and the have-nots in the warrens.

Disclaimer: Not ours. AtS belongs to Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy, and Fox. Fray belongs to Joss Whedon. This is an unofficial and unauthorized fan comic. No money is being exchanged in the making of this comic. (But plenty of lurks will be dusted in the making of this comic.) Story by [livejournal.com profile] yhlee, artwork by [livejournal.com profile] astridv. The look of Fray's world and its denizens is based on the designs that Karl Moline developed for 'Fray', but I don't want to cling too closely to the source there.

This one's dedicated to [livejournal.com profile] makd, for being a good ghost of the fandom. :)

TBC

In case you missed 'em, here are some older posts with character sketches for Angel and Gunn. Haven't tried my hands on sketching Fray yet, I'm looking forward to that.

This is very much a work in progress, and I likely will go back and change a thing or two in these pages. I also settled for scanning in 100 dpi for now, because my computer and I, we haven't sorted out our differences yet. [eta better scans]

No Spike?

Ah well, I might continue reading this for Gunn, but I have to say that my main worry goes to what happened to Spike*eg*

Nope, Spike isn't in this one. But you know Spike, always fall on his feet. He's probably okay. ;)

I love it! The artwork is so gorgeous, and combined with [livejournal.com profile] yhlee's beautiful words... fantastic.

Want more!

Want more!

Lucky coincidence, 'cause I want to make more. I had to tear myself away from the script and get back to my book. I hope I'll have another page soon though.

Whoa! "This is my city now" -- very Angel, yet also very Angelus.

and: Bonus: dedicated to moi? THANK YOU! I am so honored! Astrid, this is very nice of you. Thank you - again!

I can't wait to see it finished - the story's got me hooked, and the pics are fabulous!!

great job! I am looking forward to reading the rest of the comic. [sighs from happiness.]

Beautiful, beautiful work as always love. Far, far better then the released comics.

I have to say I can't help feeling sorry that there's no Spike though, but hey, we can't have everything. :)

Heh. Yeah, I know the feeling. I used to wish that [livejournal.com profile] eliade would write Angel, just once. Ah well. But, it makes even more pleased that you like this one, even though it's Spike-less.

What a fantastic start. I agree that Fray is utterly amazing and I know the two of you will do that world justice.

This a fabulous treat.

It's a tough order; Fray is just so damn good that it's hard to come close. On the other hand, it's really inspiring, too.

Here via [livejournal.com profile] makd, and I had to say that I love the artwork and will be looking for future updates. I don't think I've ever read a comic before, but I'm mightily impressed with what you guys have done so far.

Thanks so much. You've never read comic? If you ever want recs, just holler. As a genre, comic has always been woefully underestimated. There's of course a lot of trash, as in every genre, but there're also true masterpieces of art and literature.

So much better than Old Friends! But I do miss Spike, he is my favourite. That said, loved the artwork, and the dark realism of a post NFA world.

Thank you. Colouring is always the toughest part of comic art for me, and this one's particulary tricky because of the grittyness of the setting. I'm really glad it works for you.

Hey, glad you like. Hm, I want to try to post at least one page a month, so you could just come back every couple of weeks and check. When the whole thing is complete, I'll post it to [livejournal.com profile] hyperion_lobby or some other community.

You're of course welcome to friend either of our journals, I just don't post artwork that often so oftentimes it's not a very exciting read... I fear a lot of the time it's really me griping about my computer. *g*

Wow, what a great start! I loved Fray, and just from the first page this has the same feel to it. I'm impressed and intrigued.

I'm glad you think it has the same feel. I was trying to catch the atmosphere while still staying true to my own style. That thing is a real challenge, not least because Fray is so fantastic and you wanna do it justice.

Thanks so much for reccing!

I've been waiting for this. It's even better than I dared to hope for. Fic is all very well and good, but the art makes it feel like the show. Love yhlee's text on what this city is now, and her last line. Art-wise, it's all gorgeous, but I especially love how the ooky gang of bad (?) guys look, and Angel's face on the second to last panel--love the expression of realization, and the way you did the coloring. Very very cool, and I can't wait to see more.

Oh man, I'm glad you think that... 'cause I realized that expectations for this might well be higher than for the last comic I did, and that's kind of *gulp*. Nope, no pressure at all. :O)

Angel's face on the second to last panel

Yeah, I was pleased with how that turned out. With watercolour, you never know. Sometimes the first glazes will work, and then other times the paint will leave annoying lines when it dries, and you have to do another layer to fix it, and it can get muddy. Watercolour art is a weird mix of frustration and fun.

Fic is all very well and good, but the art makes it feel like the show.

I was wondering why there's not more comic in the fandom. I understand why there's no more hand-drawn art, but I think a Photoshop-savvy fan could do something neat with manip'd screenshots. That's kinda be the love child of vid and fic.

[identity profile] loves-bitch.livejournal.com 2006-06-19 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
OMG this is so cool. I LOVE Fray (I may of squeed like a manic fangirl when her Scythe turned up on Buffy) anf this just seems like an awsome comic.

Yay, a Fray fan! I hadn't read the comic at the time s7 aired, so the scythe came a bit out of nowhere. It's sure a lot cooler if you recognize it from the comic. I wonder if TPTB are planning more comics in the Frayverse.
