Ha. I just completed my Jennifer Keller set at stargateficrec with two weeks to spare so I have accomplished at least something this month.... And I still have a couple recs left (I found a Cadman/Keller one, heh. :). I could save those up for another full set, only then I might end up with two categories again because I already volunteered for AU. Hm... By the way, they're always looking for new reccers over at ficrec. It's fun, really. And I think their how-to-rec has gotten less confusing for newbie reccers since their recent changes of the rec format.
x-posted from ficrec:

pay off by [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve
Rodney McKay/Jennifer Keller; PG-13 (my guess); 600 words
Why this must be read: Written for [livejournal.com profile] non_mcsmooch, with a very cool take on the prompt and also on a quite popular fanfic theme :). This ficlet is just 600 words long but it's a delightful look at the relationship between Rodney and Jennifer, and at Rodney himself.

And for something different, here's another Yuletide rec:
Spaceman Spiff Goes To Chirrutzz by [personal profile] elf
gen; 2456 words
Summary: In which Spiff is not slashed with Harkness, Mal, Kirk, or Zapp Brannigan. Nor with anyone else. Because Spiff is really too young for those games. (Yet.) Instead, he's on a mission to a dangerous, distant planet. Which is dangerous. And distant. And mission-y.

Yuletide rec:
Fearful Symmetry by Anonymous (fandom: Back to the Future)
gen; Marty McFly, Emmett Brown; 4,839 words
Saw this rec'd by Friendshipper and enjoyed it muchly. I loved the movie (Time travel! 'nuff said) and this story has got a good handle one the whole time travel (pseudo)science. It makes the whacky physics of the movie actually appear more plausible. And I really like where she went with Marty's character.

I haven't even got around to writing all the sga_santa recs. And I got two must-rec Big Bangs. *flails* Okay, for starters:
More SGA Santa Fic Wot I Liked:
Never Quite What You Expect
John/Rodney, Teyla, Ronon; PG; ~7400
Summary: The problem with most of the ways it could happen is that the scenarios aren't nearly awkward enough.
Author's Notes: "I threw a number of monanotlisa's requests at the wall, and "twisted cliches", "banter", and "humor" stuck the fastest. Hope you enjoy it!"

Twisted cliches, check. Banter, check. Humor, check check. Mixed together with great result. :)
(Plus, it's only a side detail in the story, but I'm loving this fic so much more for getting Jennifer right and not buying into certain fanon cliches.)

Villa Triste
Gen, slightly McKay/Keller; R for violence and torture; 2800 words
Summary: McKay is captured and held for ransom.

Sparesly yet effectively written. Fic focussing on torture is generally not my thing, but this one worked for me.

Are You Naked Under That Thing?
Gen; John, Rodney; h/c; 1,300 words
Rating: PG
Summary: "I'm here because I received a phone call at midnight from Jennifer, who, by the way, works at the damn hospital where they'd taken you, telling me that you'd been seriously hurt, so I get halfway to the hospital when she calls and tells me you'd checked yourself out. And here you are, at home, in your..." He frowned. "Are you naked under that thing?"

I like the idea that years from now they will still be friends who care about each other, relationship breakups notwithstanding.

I finished another job, so I got time for fanart again. Also started to do what I've been meaning to do for ages and dig through my unwatched-vids folder.

vid recs:
Sober by LaPrincesseNini (YouTube link)
A Ronon tribute; characters: Ronon and ensemble

A fascinating in-depth character study that explores Ronon and his past. I want to watch it a couple more times to catch all the nuances but I wanted to come here and rec it right away. [livejournal.com profile] lunabee34 wrote a very interesting analysis of the vid. (link)

Rodney's Despair by [livejournal.com profile] chayiana
gen; Rodney and ensemble; angst/drama; song: Gravity of Love by Enigma
Summary: Rodney struggles with all the losses in the past, with all the dead he feels responsible for.

Great character study; my eyes were glued to the screen! I like how she shows Rodney confronted with loss and tragic mistakes without turning him into a total woobie.

Made by the evil genius who created Muppets In Atlantis, Be A Rockstar, and The Lost Button, which are completely different in tone of course. Check out Chayiana's vid archive.

One-Night Fandoms: A Tribute to Yuletide by [livejournal.com profile] eruthros and [livejournal.com profile] thingswithwings
I got so inspired by this vid, I was *this* close to signing up for yuletart. (Deadline happens to be tonight.) But the thing is, when I'm trading art I really like to get fic in return... Well, I still have a few hours to make up my mind.

But speaking of Yuletide, here's another Drop the Dead Donkey fic from the Yuletide archives, which I loved for its sharp, three-dimensional portrayal of the characters:
Sensible Silk Shirts by Kanna-Ophelia (Drop the Dead Donkey)
Joy/Helen (plus ensemble); PG-13; humor/romance (well, as romantic as it can get... we are talking about Joy here.); 4,700 words
Sunday 31st August, 1997. Globelink rises to the broadcasting crisis with their usual ruthless efficiency, and in any case, other news is far more distracting.

Reading all the DtDD fic (well, three, but I thought there was none!) reminded me how much I loved this show, so I went to Amazon UK just now and bought all six seasons. This is a good time to buy DVDs... in many cases it's actually cheaper for me to buy them there than to rent them here.

more fic recs, SGA:
The Unfinished Project by [livejournal.com profile] wildcat88
gen; PG; team; ~3600 words
Summary: A missing village and an unexpected find leaves the team trapped and injured. Rodney must risk everything to save them.

Plotty genfic with lovely team interaction, written for the prompt: When technology gets angry.

Icky Girl Germs! ZOMG!!1ELEVENTY!1!! by [livejournal.com profile] rigel_7 (cartoon)
John/Rodney, Rodney/Sam, with a dash of OT5; Crack!Meta, south-park style (image heavy)

Rofl! That is all. ('cuz if laughter is better than tears it also beats banging your head against the keyboard.)

[livejournal.com profile] leesa_perrie is putting together a Lists of Episode-Related Fanworks (gen only; fic, art, and vids). She writes: This is WIP and I am still working my way through various archives, however, if you know of fics, artwork or song vids that are not on these lists, I am more than happy for you to contact me (preferably with the url).
She's already got a pretty comprehensive list of episode-related genfic. I thought for some eps I'd read all the tags that are out there, but I was proved wrong. :)

Whee, someone asked for one of my story-thingies at storyfinders. That's the first time that ever happened and it makes me rather ridiculously happy.
on that happy note: fic recs...

Those Three Words by [livejournal.com profile] argosy (SGA)
McKay/Sheppard; NC-17; humor/romance; 5,700 words
Summary: John has something he wants to say, but it won't be easy.

Another thing that brought a big smile to my face. Emotionally stunted!John, Rodney, and a very long jumper ride... delightful read. :)

Patrick and the Flim-Flam Man by Rachael Sabotini (A Dogs Breakfast/SGA)
Patrick/John; PG-13; 6,500 words
summary: Patrick was a free spirit, a rebel who liked to sort his fruit loops by color, while John was the stunt coordinator of Starcrossed, a late night sci-fi soap opera.

Wow, she nailed Patrick's characterization in a way I wouldn't have thought possible. I mean, that can't be an easy character to write. The two shows fuse quite nicely, too!

The Running Order by Adaptation Decay (Drop the Dead Donkey)
gen; 760 words
And now... Drop The Dead Donkey. This fanfiction was first broadcast in December 2008 when Jonathon Ross had been suspended from the BBC for leaving abusive messages on Andrew Sachs' answering machine, the collapse of the Icelandic banking industry was pushing the UK further into a recession and retail chain Woolworths was about to cease trading after sixty years on Britain's high streets.

This could be a scene straight from the show. (That was one good show!)

comics and artwork:
have yet to contain anything you wouldn't encounter on the show.

Recs:
-I would warn for rape/non-con (does not necessarily apply to Buffyverse recs; I don't remember how we handled things back then). I would (in the unlikely case I'd even read it) warn for incest and chan.

-I mention character death only when I feel it does not spoil the story; in cases where that warning would be a spoiler and the author hasn't mentioned it either, I hint at darkness in the story, nothing more specific. Personally I hate being spoiled for surprise character death, both on tv and in fic, because it deprives me of a potential emotional and cathartic response, and I feel very strongly against any suggestions to make character death warnings mandatory.

-I rarely use the warnings: none label - and if I've learned anything over the last few days, it's that there are triggers beyond the obvious things like non-con, incest, and cutting, so writing warnings: none because I can see nothing triggering in it might not even be helpful for everybody. However I meticulously label all my recs with ratings, tags, and descriptions that should give enough information about what kind of story to expect.

-Feel free to email me for more details about any fic and I'll try to answer to the best of my ability.

fancomic rec:
My friend [livejournal.com profile] jwaneeta has drawn a three-page Iron Man comic. It's a classic h/c scene with very cool artwork (she's a pro comic artist) and it made me aww even though I don't know one of the characters...

Coda by [livejournal.com profile] jwaneeta
fandom: Marvel; Steve/Tony; h/c, fluff; post-Red Zone; 3 pages, full color

(Can you imagine what she'd do in SGA? I mean!)

[livejournal.com profile] sga_genficathon has started posting a few days ago and of course I've already hopelessly fallen behind in my reading but I plan to read all the fic. The ones I have read so far have been fantastic. They're posting three stories a day over two weeks, go check it out!

I'm taking some time away from fic reading each week to read one French comic. That's my preparation for French class: one BD per week. I figured, rather then cramming down grammar and vocab, I'd go for the painless way. :) Works pretty well too, but those weeks just fly by, man! You blink and it's Wednesday again.

Hey, I learned how to link usernames so they don't show up as Dreamwidth user when I'm crossposting. (instead of lj user, type user name=[username] site=livejournal.com)

I just watched Cube and liked it rather a lot. I'd avoided the movie before because I thought it would be too gory for my taste, but my fear was unfounded. Apart from a few shocker scenes the horror was more psychological... anticipation of the horrors lurking around the corner (or within your fellow human). We were all creeped out quite nicely.

Anyway, as behooves a good fan, I went online right away and looked for some Worth-centric fic as a band-aid for that ending. :) Didn't find anything good at the pit, but then I remembered to google 'hewligan' and found this Thoughtcrimes xover I liked:

434 Feet Square by [livejournal.com profile] honey_babes
Pairing: David Worth (Cube)/Brendan Dean (Thoughtcrimes); Rating: R
Summary: Worth gets a second chance.

I found both characters interesting and three-dimensional, written in a way that makes me want to read more about them (and I haven't even watched Thoughtcrimes yet).

Back to Atlantis...
(did I mention I finished the last missing page for project Whatafuckloadofwork today? I can now procrastinate online again without feeling guilty.)
SGA fic recs:
Five Authors Who Didn't Write Stargate Atlantis by [livejournal.com profile] rhymer23
gen; PG; Characters: Team, plus others; Words: 3000
Summary: Four authors who (fortunately for them) didn't write Stargate Atlantis, and one who (fortunately for Atlantis) didn't write it, either.

Our characters end up in various fictional universes where they don't fit in all too well. Brilliant pastiche; she manages to emulate the various authors's style just perfectly, and on top of that each story is hilarious.

Old Soldiers Die Hard by [livejournal.com profile] friendshipper
gen, Rating: T; spoilers: S3; 8500 words
Summary: The old guy in Room 30B was about the most disagreeable human being that the nurses had ever met. But he did get visitors -- including a retired Air Force Colonel.

This is a story I'd put off reading for a while because from the summary and subject matter I'd feared it would be depressing... which, okay, it turned out to be most definitely not. Wonderful story, with an interesting and engaging OC. I really like the outsider POV.

Over the weekend I finished the covers for the two books I illustrated earlier this year... finally, two things I can cross off my to-do list. There was actual hopping-through-the-room after I was done. Also, bouncing up and down. I can't post the scans yet which sucks because I'm insanely happy with the artwork and want to share it with the world. Ah well.

Original fiction rec: [livejournal.com profile] plaidder is serializing one of her original novels in her lj: 'Better To Burn' is the prequel to her 'Women On Fire' fantasy series. All four novels, set in the world of Ideire, are excellent. I don't read much original fiction these days, but her stories gripped me immediately, I was pretty much unable to put them down.

Background information & Chapter One: Rules
Chapter Two: Trapped
Chapter Three: Gifts, pt.I, pt.II
Plaidder plans to post the story in weekly installments; you must be over 18 and sign up to get added to her reading filter (the first three chapters are unlocked)
***
drabble rec (BtVS): Changed by [livejournal.com profile] spuffyduds
G-rated; Joyce, pre-season 5.
Just hundred words, but they pack quite a punch.
***
fic rec (NCIS): This Never Happens in the J. Edgar Hoover Building by [livejournal.com profile] kageygirl
Crack. With great character voices.

By way of [livejournal.com profile] midnightsjane I found an unexpected treasure: Calvin&Hobbes fanfic. No, really.
Reminiscence by Kenya Starflight
Summary: Calvin is all grown up... how has the passage of time affected him and those around him? Gen.

I keep thinking that an Angel and/or Bones vid to Oingo Boingo's 'Dead Man's Party' could be a very shiny thing indeed, but that song runs six minutes long. I figure if I actually ever want to veer into vidding it would be advisable to start with something several minutes shorter. The other problem is that when I listen to the song, I'm getting flashes of a Bones crossover in which Booth is shanshued Angel... only I don't buy into the shanshu angle myself, at all; it has never worked for me because the characters are too unalike.
***
Via [livejournal.com profile] tkp's post here (which is chock full of info) I followed the wiki link to cat macros (I just wanted to know why they're called that) and thusly discovered lolcode, a code entirely based on lolcat 1337 sp34k!!1! Here's an example:
HAI
CAN HAS STDIO?
I HAS A VAR
GIMMEH VAR
IZ VAR BIGGER THAN 10?
	YARLY
		BTW this is true
		VISIBLE "BIG NUMBER!"
	NOWAI
		BTW this is false
		VISIBLE "LITTLE NUMBER!"
	KTHX
KTHXBYE
I mean, is this the coolest thing or what? I'm not really kidding... It's hilarious, but I also find it really fascinating to watch a language evolve before ones eyes. I even may have a *cough*Klingon guide*cough* lying around somewhere..
***
I gave my roommate my printout of [livejournal.com profile] stoney321's PotC fic 'You Had a Charming Air, All Cheap and Debonair' (which I haven't found the time to read myself because I am still busy with my stack of unread Bones fic). And now it looks like the roommate is hooked. Since she's not on LJ and I'm not in the fandom, I thought I might ask the flist for recs. Do you know any good PotC fics? Jack-centered preferably, and I'm pegging her as a gen reader, but not-overly-graphic slash or het are fine, too.
***
I found another longish Bones fic. :) I'm only a few chapters in and like it muchly, very promising. And I found it at ffn, too. Fanlib's continuous dissing of ffn has really made me appreciate the good old pit so much more.
