The Art of Looking for Trouble by [archiveofourown.org profile] Annakovsky, [archiveofourown.org profile] tearupthesky (Parks&Rec)
Leslie/Ben; NC-17; 10609 words; Spoilers for 3x01 "Go Big or Go Home"
Summary: This chart comes in handy so much, she doesn't know why everyone complains about it all the time.

I was browsing through the Yuletide section and ended up here (this isn't a Yuletide fic). And rejoiced, for Annakovski was one of my favorite Buffy writers and I like Parks&Rec a lot, and as it happens I just watched "Go Big or Go Home" earlier today. Terrific fic! The Leslie-POV is amazing and the dialogue could come straight from the show. It's kinda like watching the show, only an X-rated version.
Snippet:
"Oh my God. Are you kidding? You think I'm going to see the park and give you the non-existent money the town doesn't have?"

Well, anything would sound like a bad idea if you said it in that snotty, skeptical tone. The Declaration of Independence would probably sound like a total downer if Ben was the one reading it out loud. "No," Leslie lies, feeling heat in her cheeks. "I just think someone should be enjoying the parks before you decide to pave over them and build condos or a Wal-Mart or a... puppy-killing factory."

Ben chuckles beside her. Of course he thinks the murder of adorable puppies would be hilarious, that's just so Ben.

Lesser Fleas by [archiveofourown.org profile] auburn (Thoughtcrimes)
10640 words; gen; Freya McAllister & Brendan Dean; casefic/psi noir/espionage
Summary: Four cases, three dilemmas, two agents, one conclusion: the time will come to run.

If you've ever been in SGA fandom chances are you've seen the hidden jewel that is Thoughtcrimes, a pilot for a tv show that never happened (tiny sigh) starring Navi Rawat and Joe Flanigan. This story explores that universe in a fascinating way... painted in shades of grey, with an engaging plot and a very fitting ending.

The Best-Laid Plans by [livejournal.com profile] rhymer23 (SGA/LOTR)
2700 words; gen; PG; Characters: McKay, Sheppard, Ronon, Teyla, Radek... and Gandalf; humor, crack
Summary: A man, an elf, a dwarf and a reluctant hobbit ("I don't even get to wear boots!") go on a quest that could change the world in ways that the wise have long foreseen. Alternatively, however…

How would things have played out had our Atlantis characters been in charge of Ring disposal? Turns out, quite different.

Never Is A Promise by [livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63 (Harry Potter)
6500 words; Harry/Hermione, Ron/Hermione; PG; future fic
Summary: Many years too late, Harry realizes you can't get over something until you admit there's something to get over.

I'm not really interested in any HP pairing but Yahtzee has been one of my favorite Angel writers, so I checked this story out and really enjoyed it! The emotions and relationships feel very genuine. (I like how the fic rather ignores reader expectations.)

The Great Muppet-Angel-Leverage Caper by [livejournal.com profile] mizzy2k (crossover)
[PG; gen; crack!; 2500 words]
Summary: This story starts, as many of the greatest stories in history do, with a talking frog.

I'm giggling just typing this rec. Yes, folks, this is the Angel/Leverage/Muppet Show crossover you didn't know was missing from your life.

Honest When It Counts by Lear's Daughter (Leverage/Lie to me)
Gen; 2,440 words
Dr. Cal Lightman is asked to attend a party and determine whether the guests are who they say they are. He meets a fascinating group of people who very clearly aren't. Or, Cal Lightman meets Nate Ford and co.

Lie To Me is another show I don't know but the fic is enough to give the gist. Very interesting crossover - psychologist specialized in reading body language meets group of professional liars. I especially enjoyed the part where Cal Lightman is trying to read Sophie. ;)

This fic has a sequel, Conversation in a Holding Cell.
gen; Nate Ford & Cal Lightman; spoilers for Maltese Falcon Job; 1,881 words
Summary: Sterling hires Cal Lightman to read Nate's mind. Little does he know that Cal and Nate are old pals.

The Lesser Evil by [archiveofourown.org profile] Sholio / [personal profile] sholio (Highlander)
gen; PG-13; Characters: Amanda, Joe, Methos, Amy; friendship/mystery/action; 11859 words
Summary: Someone is trying to blackmail Amanda, but dragging her friends into it was a really bad idea.

A pageturner of a story, which sees Amanda getting drawn against her will into a high-stake cat and mouse game.

Today's rec I'm snagging from [personal profile] ratcreature who answered my request for Harry-in-Slytherin fic and recced me a classic AU ... just, I had no idea this story would be this friggin' addictive. Good thing I had the last few days off. Over, oh, at least 100,000 words later I haven't even got to the part where he gets into Hogwarts but wow, that's one juicy AU. It takes canon completely apart and builds the pieces into a new shape. Bit like Lego. (And it's great to see a sympathetic Snape who's still in character.)

Stealing Harry by [personal profile] sam_storyteller
AU with background Sirius/Remus; rated R; no wordcount but: long. Really long. And that's just the first story in a series.
Summary: In an alternate universe where Sirius Black never went to Azkaban, Harry divides his life between the Dursleys' house and Mr. Black's bookshop -- until Sirius realises what the Dursleys are doing to him, and takes him away from their care.

The Crossover Job by [archiveofourown.org profile] scrunchy (Leverage/Sherlock BBC)
Sophie Devereaux/Gregory Lestrade; PG-13; set in the second half of Leverage Season 2; 7472 words

Excellent crossover. I'm not even familiar with BBC's Sherlock but that didn't hamper my enjoyment of this fic in the least. And, well, I tend to ship Sophie with Nate almost exclusively, didn't know anything about Lestrade other than that he's police, and started this fic mainly because it came recced and has Sophie in a leading role. But I ended up loving her relationship with Lestrade here. It's wonderfully written; these two have great chemistry together and it's intriguing to see her through his POV... it doesn't quite read like your regular outsider POV, and yet it's still a fresh angle. I also like the way their common history is revealed in bits and pieces, adding another facet to Sophie's character.

To further celebrate my newly discovered multifannishness: 10 recs from 10 fandoms.
fic recs:
It's All So Clear to Me Now by [livejournal.com profile] fools_game (Leverage)
PG; Parker POV, background Alec/Eliot and Nate/Sophie
Summary: Parker sees more than some people think.
Strong team/family vibe, great Parker voice!
The first time she fell asleep at Hardison’s she woke up scared out of her brain and nearly took Eliot’s eye when he came to wake her. Because she’d fallen asleep on the couch, and when she woke up she was in an unfamiliar bed, under the blankets, with no shoes on. She’d fallen asleep with other people around. They’d moved her while she slept, and she hadn’t noticed, hadn’t even stirred, and she freaked so hard she was fleeing through the lobby before she realised she was barefoot, and then she had to go back up to get her shoes. Alec gave her coffee as she walked gingerly back in, and there was an omelette waiting for her, and Eliot was hardly smirking at all, so she stayed for breakfast.
Come at the King by VanaTuivana (The Wire)
m/m; PG-13; Omar Little, with cameos from De’Londa Brice, baby!Namond, and Bird; pre-canon; 2,655 words
Summary: Omar Little be who he be, and ain't nobody come at him.
While seaching for Namond fic I instead found this gem and got sucked in from the very first line. Very compelling character study!

Ordo ad Fratres Faciendum by [personal profile] sholio (SGA)
(x-posted from genrec); PG-13; Ronon, Rodney, John, Teyla, Torren; set late S.5; 20,800 words;
Summary: A jumper crash separates the team on a wilderness planet, and they aren't alone.
"So. You and Ronon."
Rodney looked up from the video game console. "Wow, subtle."
"Are you guys, uh ..." John gestured with the game controller. He wasn't sure whether to finish with okay or fighting or capable of working together or what, so he just let it trail off into silence, though when Rodney's eyes went wide John realized that he might ought to have been a little more specific.
"We're not sleeping together, Sheppard."
"I didn't think you were!" Although it would, come to think of it, explain a few things.
Daily Mechanics by [livejournal.com profile] bravenewcentury (Fullmetal Alchemist)
gen; PG; Winry, Paninya;
Summary: There's a lot to get used to in a new town.
Winry and Paninya, making new lives for themselves in Rush Valley. Great friendship fic.

vid recs
Who Needs Enemies by theanonsisters (Deep Space Nine)
gen; Julian Bashir and others
Summary: Who needs enemies when you've got friends.
Smooth, elegantly cut, and most of all complex. Hm, kind of like the good doctor himself. :)

A Tall Tale by [profile] maichan808 (Big Fish (movie))
Summary: It's not the story, it's how you tell it...
Incredibly evocative of the movie. I had a major emotional response to this vid and looking at the comments I'm not the only one. Can't even put my finger on the mechanics of it.

Teal'c P.I. by Nibikko (SG-1)
summary: Teal'c's suggestion to Martin Lloyd in episode "200" for a Jaffa detective television series comes to life in this fan video.
Heee... pure glee in vid form!

Save Chuck (Chuck)
This is great fun to watch. It uses footage throughout the first three seasons but cut so out of context that it's practically spoiler free. I can imagine it'd make a really nice recruiter vid. Sooo... if you're curious and have no idea what the show is about, check out this vid to get an idea?
(And I can't get enough of that soundtrack, even though it gets used a *lot* in fanvids).

One Piece MMV (One Piece)
Don't know the story, but I like the effective way the manga panels are used to convey movement and time flow. And I really like the mood created by the pics and the soundtrack. Very interesting.

Heeey! I finished book #2. I still have to scan everything and format it, and I'll probably be getting a couple corrections for this one, but still... mostly done, with about a week to spare. \o/ And once it's turned in I'll have a whole month to work on my own projects - I have an idea for a kids' book that I think has a lot of potential, fingers crossed. And there's the comic thing. (And I gotta do my bookkeeping.) (And my taxes.) Hopefully some fanart. And post recs.

Uh, also, thanks to all the folks on my flist who brought Leverage to my attention. I had a feeling I'd love the show when I watched The Rashomon Job. That ep got me so curious that I started watching from the beginning and yup, totally love it. The characters are fantastic, and I always had a thing for heist stories. I'm only about six or seven eps in but I might be looking for fic recs later on. :)

It's funny, I used to be the typical fandom serial monogamist, but all of a sudden I'm multifannish? That's new; I kinda like it. Think I'll celebrate a job (hopefully) well done with an ep of Leverage, followed by a Chuck fic and a few pages from my new FMA doujinshi.

In this vein, a couple of multi-fandom recs:
Wait in the Van by Aelfgyfu (Chuck/White Collar)
gen; humor; 6,000 words
Summary: Peter kept telling Neal to wait in the van. Was it Neal's fault he didn't specify which one?
I don't actually know White Collar, but the story worked really well for me. If you're a Chuck fan, all you gotta know is that Neal is played by the same actor who plays Bryce Larkin and you're good to go.

Hyperion by Marcus Rowland (The Saint (novels)/BtVS)
Summary: The 1940s Saint pays a visit to Los Angeles and the Hyperion Hotel.
I'm reccing this fic and its two sequels, all Buffy crossovers. Marcus does a great job linking the two canons... not a small feat, since they're set in different periods in time.

Bigger on the Inside by [livejournal.com profile] sentientcitizen (Doctor Who/SG1/SGA)
gen; PG; ~700 words
Summary: Everyone says the same thing when they see the TARDIS for the first time. Well. Ish.
Various SG characters see the TARDIS for the fist time. Hilarious!

Today, I bring Chuck crossovers. For those who don't know the show which I assume is, well, most of my flist, here are some caps to put faces to the names. Sarah, Chuck, and Casey:

Okay, you're all set...

Chuck Versus the Uncanny by rivkat (Chuck/SPN)
gen; Chuck, Sam, Dean, Casey, Sarah; humor; 2277 words
Dean turned, and in less than a blink the two of them were pointing guns at one another.
“Hey, no, hey!” Chuck protested. “This is a big, big misunderstanding. And now it’s a misunderstanding with guns, and I can’t help thinking that is a lot worse than your basic everyday misunderstanding, so maybe we can all back off—”
Diplomatic Mission to the Buy More by mahoni (Chuck/SGA)
gen; Chuck Bartowski, Elizabeth Weir, Jack O'Neill, Morgan Grimes; humor; 726 words
Summary: "Chuck Bartowski has the worst poker face of anyone I've ever met. Worse than Rodney and Carson put together."

crossover comment fic by [livejournal.com profile] shogunsquirrel (Chuck/Highlander)
gen; Chuck, Duncan, Methos; 380 words
Before he flashed, he figured the two guys in trench coats heading toward the counter were bad news. Anyone wearing a coat that long in Southern CA...
And then he flashed
And one more crossover, this one of Calvin&Hobbes and a canon I'm completely unfamiliar with - which didn't diminish my enjoyment of the fic one bit:
The Roommate of +10 Confusion by Grevling (Calvin&Hobbes/FoxTrot)
gen; Jason Fox, Calvin; 3241 words
Summary: There must be some scientifically sound way for Jason Fox to be able to quantify his new college roommate, but he hasn't found one yet that fits. Especially when he factors in the stuffed tiger.

Never heard of the Jason Fox character, but he and Calvin are a match made in heaven. (Or hell, depending on who you ask, I guess ;o)

another Yuletide rec:
This kid I once knew (Calvin & Hobbes)
(temporary link in case the servers are robust)
gen; Susie Derkins; post-canon; 1786 words
Summary: Daniel sends their whole improv group an e-mail saying "check this out its fun1!1" and a link to a web comic called The Adventures of Spaceman Spiff.

I read quite a few good C&H stories in which the kids grew up. This one from Susie's POV is one of my favorites.

and squeezing in some non-yuletide recs:
Chuck vs Five Men, One with a Knife by sharpasamarble (Chuck)
gen (with Chuck/Sarah UST, emphasis on 'U'); set in S1; adventure/drama; 70,687 words
Summary: On New Year's Day, Chuck contemplates his resolutions. But a group blunder on a simple mission has complex consequences for Team Chuck, leading each member down a road he didn't expect to travel.

It's rare to find a casefile-style fic with such a satisfying plot. The characterization is sharp and the relationship dynamics portrayed in an interesting way. The author captures the season one vibe well, and adds her own touch.

Love is written in Poetry, Marriage in Prose by Santa (SGA)
R; McKay/Keller/ pre-McKay/Keller/Sheppard; 4191 words
Summary: Rodney and Jennifer fantasize about opening up their relationship.

Looks like McKay/Keller/Sheppard has come to be my OT3, thanks to fic like this one. A well-written, fun exploration of the trio's relationship... during the course of which some popular fandom tropes get turned on their head (always a big plus).

First yuletide recs:

Guns 'n' Neuroses (Frasier/Supernatural crossover (no, really!))
(temporary alternate link in case of heavy yuletide traffic)
gen; characters: Frasier & Niles (main), Martin, Daphne; humor; 2592 words
Summary: Niles and Frasier, hunters of the supernatural.
“Frasier,” Niles said, sounding ludicrously calm as he brandished the goriest of Martin’s photographs. “We could make a difference - saving people, learning things.”
Frasier gave in to the adrenaline coursing through his system. “With great intelligence comes great responsibility,” he said, letting his voice roll out dramatically. “This calls for sherry!”

The Post-Black Friday Shopping Guide (Chuck)
(temporary link)
Chuck/Sarah, (Chuck/Sarah/Casey); also featuring the BuyMore crew, Ellie and Devon; post-ep; Spoilers: 4x10; 6882 words
Summary: After the Not-Thanksgiving, Chuck and Ellie aren't talking, Casey has security concerns, and Sarah's pizza-making skills leave something to be desired.

(all the Yuletide 2010 fandoms are temporarily listed on this static page for quick access in case the main archive slows down too much.)

Okay, not supposed to post yet but I read this excellent Vampire Diaries fic by [personal profile] havocthecat which comes with the label 'best read today', as I assume there's a good chance it'll get jossed with the next episode (I'm unspoiled):

The Pitchfork Play (Not) Its Part Well
gen; PG; ~2000 words
Summary: Liz Forbes looks past what the Founders Council has always known. Post-Kill or Be Killed.

Why rec'd: I'm not getting my hopes up but I'd be thrilled if this were to happen on the show.

For the past few days [livejournal.com profile] megatexas and his cousin crashed on our couch (or rather, in our guest room). The weather chose to play extra nice the entire time the guys were here so my little city could present itself from its best side. I took them to Münster's main attraction: the High Hill indoor climbing center. :O) (I woke up the next morning and my first thoughts were DAMN I FEEL GOOD! I love how both body and mind feel after an evening of climbing. Best drug ever!)

Speaking of: I was browsing Youtube yesterday and ended up watching buildering/street climbing clips all afternoon. I really gotta make a proper post sometime. Right now, check out this guy! Jyati Raju Free (Solo) Climbing

I'm about to hit the gym and afterwards conk out in the sauna, and after that I have to get to work. New project, end of October deadline. Doesn't sound too bad, but I can already see it will be a ton of work so it's best to dive in right away.

fic recs:
Voyage of the Wraith Hunter by [personal profile] sholio (SGA)
gen; PG; 3200 words
Summary: "We always thought you were a legend," the Traveler captain says.
I love how friendshipper paints a future!verse that feels fresh and original, and the many background details make it feel entirely real. Makes me want to read more stories about the Wraith Hunter!

How Not To Eat An Elephant by [personal profile] tielan (SGA, SG-1)
gen; PG-13; action-adventure, friendship; 1,500 words
summary: In which Teyla and Vala play 'Good Cop, Bad Cop' and Cam muses on the wisdom of biting things that bite back.
Teyla and Vala: They make a kickass team. :)
(I like this fic for the same reason I like the Scar&Miles one I recced the other day: two people who make a good team because of their differences, not in spite of them.)

Chuck vs The Emoticon by Ne71 (Chuck)
Chuck/Sarah and gen; PG-13; humor/romance, 10,844 words
summary: Chuck and Sarah have an IM discussion. Silliness ensues. Now a multichapter! More Casey! More fighting! Seriously, there is.
Not the first messenger fic I've read but one that makes the most of the format. The first three parts in particular are really funny and inventive. (I'd say you need at least a passing familiarity with the characters and the setting for this fic to work.)

vid rec:
"Illyria" Opening Credits by illyrium24 (Angel)
I'm apparently not the only one who thinks that Illyria: the Series would've been a very good thing indeed. There are several Illyria opening credits on youtube and this is my favorite by far. The editing is superb, and it really gets the feeling across... Illyria's personal brand of creepy meets badass, demon meets humanity. Extra bonus points for including Connor! As well as Faith, Spike and Wes!

Man, what a great show that would've been. *sigh*

SGA recs, x-posted from stargateficrec/stargategenrec:
A Candle Against The Ocean by Ryuuza Kochou
Gen; Characters: Miko Kusanagi (main), Rodney McKay, Radek Zelenka, others; 4,500 words
Summary: Miko Kusanagi, despite several large pieces of evidence to the contrary, had been born in America; she wore the American flag patch on her shoulder, and not the staring red dot of her Japanese heritage.
Why this must be read: The author takes an underdeveloped minor character and gives her a backstory and a voice. This story feels very genuine and the Miko POV is fascinating.

All the Roads Return by [personal profile] sholio
Gen; PG; Teyla Emmagan, Rodney McKay; 9,500 words
Summary: Rodney and Teyla are stranded and captured, with a valuable burden to carry.
Why rec'd? Teyla and Rodney get shanghaied and end up far away from Atlantis. A really enjoyable friendship fic with an interesting look into Pegasus culture. I love the Teyla POV!

more fic recs (FMA/hagaren):

The Perils of Coffee by [livejournal.com profile] solitude1056
Gen; Rated G (but comes with frank sex ed talk); Chars: Ed, Hughes, Roy, Riza; 3,656 words

Squee! [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve wrote me a story with Jennifer, Sam and Rodney: no universal world
mostly gen (with background Jennifer/Rodney); warning: not a light and fluffy story; 8100 words
Between the average success rate of the gate teams, and the skill the scientists had for finding new and interesting ways to blow up large chunks of the city, Jennifer spent most of her time cooped up inside the infirmary.
This is a tense and compelling scenario. I crave stories like this, that throw these three characters together and explore what makes them tick. And I love how Jennifer's and Rodney's relationship is portrayed in the negative spaces, for lack of a better word.

and on a lighter note, also by [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve:
Greater Love Hath No Man for his Friends
gen; John Sheppard; ~1400 words
His eyes widened with horror when he got there, though. It wasn't just a section—it was a whole aisle, both sides of it lined with packages in various shades of purple and green and blue and pink. He looked down at the list, but Teyla's neat handwriting didn't offer him any guidance beyond sanitary pads and tampons, several packets. What good was that to him, when there were all these different options? There were different colours and sizes and some of them apparently had wings; John didn't want to know, because he had a sense nothing good could come of asking why sanitary pads needed to be aerodynamic.
20/20 by [livejournal.com profile] mad_maudlin (Torchwood CoE)

Mafdet, slayer of serpents by sqbr (SG-1)
summary: The Goa'uld are cruel and powerful beings, and they ruled Ancient Egypt as gods. They are, of course, no match for a cat.
Great story idea, very funny, and good execution too - the loose, cartoony lineart looks effortless and works really well for the story. And I love the coloring. (The pages took a while for me to load, but it's worth the wait.)

Jason Momoa is the New Conan the Barbarian
Whoot! \o/ This is good news. He deserves a high-profile role to showcase his talent and I think he can be really great in it... somehow I'm convinced he'll bring more nuance to it than Schwarzenegger. I just hope, hope, hope the script will be good. Please, writers, give him a good script. Because I so want to watch that.
Now if we could just get that show starring Luttrell and Hewlett I'd be a happy fangirl. But I don't think that has gotten past the rumor stage.
