Acari wrote a post about the German in Grimm that had me rofl'ing.

To improve my Japanese I bought Astrid Lindgren's "Kalle Blomquist" in the Japanese translation, but the thing is that the language used is really old-fashioned. (Which I never noticed when I read the book in German back then). So I'm looking for something more recently written. I've already read Harry Potter 3 and that turned out pretty perfect for my purposes - also had just the right level of Kanji and yomigana - but it took ages to read. So basically I'm looking for something in that vein, directed at the same age group... only a lot shorter. *ponders*
eta: I dunno, maybe Tamora Pierce, that could work! The Alanna books should be aimed at the same age group as the Harry Potter novels?

found on my reading list: The Caring Owl
An animal friendship story with amazing photos, featuring a spotted eagle owl who was injured and kept at a farm until he healed. He stuck around afterwards and now brings rats and other tasty treats to the family members including one of the cats he made friends with. (The cat in question, ironically, doesn't know what to do with a dead rat.)
