Acari wrote a post about the German in Grimm that had me rofl'ing.

To improve my Japanese I bought Astrid Lindgren's "Kalle Blomquist" in the Japanese translation, but the thing is that the language used is really old-fashioned. (Which I never noticed when I read the book in German back then). So I'm looking for something more recently written. I've already read Harry Potter 3 and that turned out pretty perfect for my purposes - also had just the right level of Kanji and yomigana - but it took ages to read. So basically I'm looking for something in that vein, directed at the same age group... only a lot shorter. *ponders*
eta: I dunno, maybe Tamora Pierce, that could work! The Alanna books should be aimed at the same age group as the Harry Potter novels?

My son reads a lot of fantasy (Japanese, jr high year 1). He just finished the 時の書 series by ギヨーム・ブレヴォー (Le Livre du Temps by Gallimard Jeunesse *wikipedia>my brain), and really enjoyed it. He also likes Dianna Wynne Jones (like Dark Lord of Derkholm and its sequel). He also just read the mega-popular horror story 王様ゲーム but said it was so-so (and the Amazon reviews are really bad).

Oh! I was a huge Mito Orihara reader as a student (angels ♥), but my son likes some of her books as well.
