[livejournal.com profile] selenak has written a fascinating post about the significance of today's date in German history. November 9th 1938 was the night of Reichskristallnacht, the night of massive Nazi pogroms that ended with thousands of Jews deported or killed and thousands of synagogues, businessess, and homes destroyed. November 9 is also the anniversary of the Berlin wall coming down. It is hard to believe that those two events are only 50 years apart.

What I hadn't even realized was that today also sees the anniversary of the foundation of the Weimar republic, the first, failed coup by the Nazis, and a failed assassination attempt on Hitler's life.
