Ugh. I've stared at this double-spread page for so long, I feel like my brain's gonna leak out of my ears. The layout and the main elements of the page are done; what's missing are a couple dozen period details and an amusing side gag or two. Think I'll call it a night. Maybe inspiration for the rest will come to me while I'm sleeping.

Now I'm in the mood for a nice, long SHIELD action/casefic with bonus Ward/Simmons to reward myself but sadly, such a thing doesn't seem to exist yet? (Or if it does and I overlooked it... please link me!)

[personal profile] rydra_wong on [community profile] disobey_gravity linked to this great climbing film La Dura Complete, the story of the combined Sharma and Ondra quest to send La Dura Dura (5.15c / 9b+) (~20 minutes).

SHIELD fic:
Won't Live to See Tomorrow by [archiveofourown.org profile] hetrez
Gen; Grant Ward & Wade Wilson, OCs; action/humor; 3596 words
Summary: Grant says, "I am normally a nicer and more genuine person. But I have been awake for twenty-four hours and had a fucking obnoxious day, so I'm only going to say this once. Stop singing, or I will end your life."

Ward has to deliver an asset for Coulson. Fun times.
(The OCs are so well-written, first I thought this was a crossover with some cop show.)

Speaking of vids, know what would be really cool? A crossover vid starring Natasha and Melinda May. Wow, I'd really love to see how that would play out.

Ride to California by [personal profile] bradcpu (The Avengers + prequels)
characters: Steve, Tony, Thor and team
Song/Artist: Paper Tongues; 3:52

This is still one of my favorite Avengers vids (and that's in spite of the fact that there's no focus on Hawkeye and Black Widow - it uses mostly footage from Thor, Cap, and Iron Man and focuses on their backstories.) The vid does a great job connecting the characters and showing them turn into a team. The song choice is perfect and so is the editing... fast but not chaotic, and on the beat. I can watch this over and over.

Gen; humor/mission fic/team; G; 3656 words
Summary:
“Is that an episode of Portlandia?” Skye blurted.
“Just background research,” Coulson said with dignity. “I encourage you all to do a little research of your own before we land. We want to make sure we’re correctly identifying any alien occurrences, not targeting any normal activity.”

Festivids is live! Some of my faves so far:

Who Are You, Defenders of the Universe (The Americans)
Music: Who Are You, Defenders of the Universe by The Dears; 3:47
Summary: All's fair in love and cold war.

I've watched this three times already; there's so much happening in these clips, and the pacing is perfect.
(If you've been curious about The Americans: this vid captures the feel of the show really well; check it out to get a first impression! All you need to know is that the show is about two KGB agents posing as an average American family during the cold war. With two teenage kids who have no idea that their parents are spies, or Russian.)

Feeling Good (Agents of SHIELD)
Music: Feeling Good by MUSE; 3:07
Summary: "You're really just asking me to drive the bus?" Agent Melinda May character study.

Dutch (The Wire)
Music: Dutch by Dessa; 3:27
Summary: Stringer Bell, life-ruiner.

Found on tumblr: video of a snowboarding crow :)

Still no snow here. The temperatures are ridiculous. 12 degrees today, no change in sight. But, I went back through my photo posts because I seemed to remember that the weather has behaved in similar ways a lot of these past years. Here's a post from January '12, and here's one from only a month later when we went iceskating on the lake. So I'm not giving up hope yet that we'll get a proper winter eventually.
Hopefully soon - one of the bushes down the street has started to blossom already.

I'd like to post another rec but I don't have my trusty bookmarks folder... hm.

Oh! First thing off the top of my head is this six-part series I found on Youtube, created by the makers of The Wire and starring many of the same actors as well: The Corner. It's based on real events, about the life of an inner city family in the drug scene of Baltimore, and it's even more raw and gritty than The Wire. The actors are all amazing, but Khandi Alexander as Fran in particular is just, so good. I highly recommend this for all Wire fans.

Posting from rainy Mülheim, where I'm visiting my dad. Earlier this year I made the decision to try at least one new thing whenever I'm in the area - since the Ruhr area has a lot to offer, culturally and also in terms of, heh, climbing. Today I checked out the Citymonkey bouldering hall, which turned out to be a great idea. It's easy to reach, cozy and has a lot more variety than our boulder at home... dozens of routes in my range, I couldn't even try all of them. Definitely something to keep in mind for my next visit.

Blur by [archiveofourown.org profile] storiesfortravellers

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Movie Trailer
Starring: Barton, Romanoff, Fury, Coulson, Hill and others; 3:29 min
Summary: SHIELD is under attack.

The title is misleading because it doesn't feature the character from the show. Characters crossing over would've been the one thing to make this even cooler for me. But even so, it's *really* cool! The editing is so smooth and it uses such extensive footage that it feels like a real movie.

Very interesting parkour/urban climbing vid I just found: Point of Contact | Flow Lifestyle
This is kind of a documentary that analyzes and explains the movements along with the images. (Speaking of images, many of the footage was shot with head-cam from the POV of someone running and jumping across rooftops. By which I mean, it might be a bit vertigo-inducing if one is sensitive to that.) The video is about 15 minutes long and I couldn't get enough of all the beautiful movement in a cool setting.

Shield fic rec
Sending in the Cavalry by [archiveofourown.org profile] Frea_O
Gen; Melinda May & Peggy Carter; character study/origin of SHIELD; rated G; 3356 words
Summary: The first time Melinda May met Margaret Carter, she was seven. Peggy Carter was fifty-seven. A story about mentorship in the face of a changing world.

And a bonus ficlet rec... short, but well-written; makes me rather hope the author will write more.
Falling apart by [archiveofourown.org profile] ferggirl
Ward/Simmons (subtext at most), Coulson; 1300 words
He hadn’t wanted a team in the first place. Why does it bother him so much to see this one falling apart?

Everything Old Is New Again by [archiveofourown.org profile] samyazaz
Gen; Abbie & Ichabod friendship; G; 1633 words
Summary: It doesn't take more than a moment's thought for Abbie to realize that she's going to have to bring Ichabod home. The man can't even figure out how to unlock a car door, a hotel is absolutely out of the question. He'd probably lock himself inside and then starve to death.

[livejournal.com profile] valawenel made a great Leverage Movie Trailer.
(If LJ is down watch on youtube.)
team vid, Eliot-centric; action/constructed reality; 4:00 min

I love well-done constructed reality-vids! Hard to believe this is her first fanvid - it does a great job of hinting at the larger story behind it, and it has that actual trailer feeling. I didn't read the story it was inspired by as I don't read much Eliot-centric fic but I'm thinking I might add it to my reading list now.

Here's a very interesting Portal fanvid that combines machinima art with stop-motion technique to tell the story of a lab researcher behind the scenes of the Aperture experiment. Contains spoilers through Portal 1, but doesn't really spoil the game as such, I think.

Here is an interesting youtube video I found via [personal profile] jae's linkspam: BBC Make Me a German: British journalist goes to Germany with his wife and kids to play at the average German family, in order to find out the secret to Germany's economic success.

Of course we here are mostly busy moaning about the country's failures but it's all a matter of perspective, perhaps. Jammern auf hohem Niveau? Anyway, as a German I found the film highly entertaining, and pretty spot on overall, the joyful play with clichees notwithstanding. A humorous take on cultural differences.

(One thing made me wonder: Is it an accepted thing to do in some countries to surf the internet while at work? I would've thought that it's frowned upon everywhere, for obvious reasons.)

Where did my rikaichan icon go? There used to be an easy-to-click icon on the upper right task bar and it went away.

I just found out through googling that as of last year, Vibram makes a winter shoe! \o/ That pleases me greatly, because the cold wet season lasts several month here, so each spring you have to start from scratch training your feet for barefoot running. I will get me a pair ASAP. Though it's annoying that they cost over twice as much here as they do in the US. >100% seems a rather excessive import fee. I'm tempted to try amazon.com instead of .de, but I guess after customs are done with them, I'll end up at the same expense.

And on the topic of shoes, my climbing shoes are starting to need a biohazard warning. I'll have to try pine shavings or something like that because eww.

[personal profile] lakrids404 linked me to this very cool parkour vid In the style of the Mirror's Edge game. (Which I'm unfamiliar with, but watching this vid you get a good idea what the actual game looks like. ;)

Been following the latest DC cock-up on tumblr: a talent search for a new artist to draw a page of Harley Quinn #0. Neat idea, right?

Panel 4/4 reads thusly: Harley sitting naked in a bathtub with toasters, blow dryers, blenders, appliances all dangling above the bathtub and she has a cord that will release them all. We are watching the moment before the inevitable death. Her expression is one of “oh well, guess that’s it for me” and she has resigned herself to the moment that is going to happen.

Another proud moment in comicsland. If it wasn't so much work I'd consider drawing a sarcastic entry for their talent search, but they're not worth it.
When I told my roommate she snarked that some editor must be looking for material for their fap folder. It would make some sort of sense, because the four panels are totally disconnected and don't give an artist any way to showcase their talent at sequential art, which you'd think is kind of an important ability to look for in a penciller.
Me, I was more wondering whether they want to weed out artists who have a problem with drawing sexist shit.
(I think one of the co-writer's explanation was that it's all 'dark humor' or somesuch. But then he took his facebook entry down so who knows.)
