More The Wire:
Article about the late Donnie Andrews, who was the inspiration for Omar Little. Omar is such a larger-than-life character that it hadn't occurred to me he's based on real life people. But no, there are actually stick-up men out there who rob drug dealers for a living. Andrews' story is fascinating.
In his earlier years when he was robbing rival dealers as a young hustler in West Baltimore — experiences that would later form the basis for the popular Omar Little character on the Baltimore crime drama “The Wire” — he vowed to never involve women or children in his crimes.

But after confessing to a murder and helping authorities bring down a crime syndicate, he took on a different mission: working to prevent youth from going down the same path that he did.

The ultimate crossover fanart: Where's Wall-E?

my bookmarks are overflowing...

Starting at 1:40 in this Wire gag reel, there's a funny (and rather lyrical, heh) composition of characters cursing. Speaking of Fuck: Shut the fuck up!

THE WIRE - 100 Greatest Quotes (spoilers)
I just finished another rewatch of the show... since with that show, you can't rewatch just one episode, you have to view at least an entire season. And it actually gets better with each viewing, because of the sheer complexity. The writing is so tight. The acting is so good. (The acting is so good that there was a moment of dissonance when I saw them out of character in the gag reel...)

fandom meta: For all the women I have loved who were dragged through the mud
Talks about hostility towards female characters, possible reasons, possible ways to change this. An astute analysis, I thought. It's long, but worth the read.

excellent short film: This little girl explains autism creatively.

I think she was like 13 when she climbed this? Cool wall structure, too!

interesting link not just for climbers: The Mechanics of the Pull-Up (and Why Women Can Absolutely Do Them)
Was partly written in response to Why Women Can’t Do Pull-Ups so don't even try
Much like math, don'tcha know it. Women can't do stuff, it's totes scientifically proven.

By the way, if you're interested in training to do pull-ups, I can't recommend the simple pull-up band enough: link. Broad rubber bands, come in various strengths. A great help for the beginner, because you don't get frustrated, and because it's considerably less strain on the body.

(The assisted pull up machine at a gym has a similar effect, but the rubber band is a lot cheaper and, really, works just as well.)

belated Unusuals YuleRec: A Virtual Pandemic by [archiveofourown.org profile] swmbo
Shraeger/Walsh, Delahoy&Banks, Alvarez, Brown; romance/quirk; teen; 2195 words
“Seriously? You’re wearing a surgical mask now? Why - why would you do that? Just feel like it complements the kevlar?”
“There is a swine flu outbreak! Do you even know what that means? In 1918, the swine flu created a pandemic. People died. Lots of people died. Everyone always dismisses influenza like it’s just a severe cold but it’s not. It’s deadly. Deadly. As in, not something to mess around with. I actually got enough for everyone in the department, who knows what Walsh exposed us to.”

The AO3 tag for this show is so disappointing when you're not into Avengers fusions. And next Yuletide is far away... (which is OTOH a good thing because I got my fill of winter. But I'm getting fic withdrawal.)

The eps are currently up on youtube btw, grab'em while you can.

Fannish meta links I enjoyed reading: [livejournal.com profile] vickysg1 posted a great Leverage manifesto at [livejournal.com profile] het_reccers: an intro into the show with plot overview, character descriptions, fic recs and more. I shall henceforth point to that post when I rec the show to new people.

[personal profile] jae got meta & squee about The Americans; if you're interested in the show, definitely check out her episode reactions. (ep spoilers, obviously)

Something different today... this was posted to [livejournal.com profile] awesome_places: 10-storey slide in City Museum (St. Louis/ Missouri)

St. Louis City Museum consists largely of repurposed architectural and industrial objects.
One of the most popular attractions are the Enchanted Caves and Shoe Shafts that run through the center of the Museum, all the way to the 10th floor.
In the Enchanted Caves, guests will find an elaborate cave system hand-sculpted by Bob Cassilly and his crew. From every direction, a different creature is staring back.

8 photos of a surreally beautiful structure. I want to visit this place and see it first hand.

bonus rec: Alone on the Wall: Alex Honnold
~4 minute film. Honnold does free solo climbing... scaling mountain faces without a rope, which almost no one does for obvious reasons. Dude actually can't seem to feel fear. It's really fascinating to watch him climb. (Some of the clips are a bit vertigo-inducing, if that's not your thing. That slightly overhanging crack starting at 1:50... gulp.)

There are like a DOZEN shows out there that look like they match my interests. Hundreds of episodes unwatched. Why did I have to fall for the one that was cancelled three years ago after only ten episodes?
Whyyyyyy?

note: shows to check out next now that Leverage is finished: Farscape, Elementary, Hustle. And Chuck season 5 (I'm actually still unspoiled for the finale so I should maybe watch that one first...)

But right now I'm rewatching The Wire and The Unusuals because feelings. Was planning on only watching season three of The Wire, but so much of it is setup for season four! (On a side note, now that I read that crossover between the two shows for Yuletide Madness, I'd kind of love to read a long one, with case plot...)
Btw, anyone know of good meta that also references real events and people in Baltimore? I'm wondering if anything like Colvin's secret Hamsterdam project actually happened.

I'm now proud owner of a Kindle. I got the cheapest one that does little more than display text, but it should be sufficient. (Except it would be handy if it could delete files, but I think I have to do that via computer, which is inconvenient.) I already downloaded and read a bunch of stories from AO3 and so far I'm very happy with it. I think I'll still print out my favorites for re-reading but I love how quick I can grab and save stuff.

We have snow! Everything looks bright even with the sun not shining, and I finally got to dust off my skis. Guy at the xerox place said it was the first time he'd seen someone come by on skis. :)

Wie ich einmal versuchte, meinen Telekomanschluss zu kündigen.
Hey Telekom! Wir schreiben uns nun schon bald 6 Monate.

Five more days to solstice, thank god. I'm getting tired of squeezing my workout into a tiny daylight window of a few hours. Went working out in the rain today. Running wasn't too bad, that multi-functional microfibre jacket really works. But training on the monkey bars is considerably less fun when all the bars are dripping with rain. This is the kind of winter I loathe... temps above freezing, so it's cold, wet and generally miserable and you can't do anything with it. Last week was below freezing, now that was awesome! The air was clear and there was a bit of snow to brighten up the place... that was pretty perfect. I fervently hope we'll get more of that.

Here's an extremely well done animated trailer for a YA book. Looks fascinating:
A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness - book trailer

And I just read that the book was written after an idea by Siobhan Dowd, who wrote The London Eye Mystery which is just a wonderful book! I'd been meaning to rec it here, too. Dowd sadly died recently, before she could finish this book. (If anybody read A Monster Calls, don't spoil me; I plan to read it.)

and a climbing clip:

This is all kinds of cool: The Hawkeye Initiative redraws absurd superheroine poses with Hawkeye.

I hope some comics artists out there take a look at those, do some quality introspection, and remember them next time they set out to draw a comic panel with a woman in it...

Rec of the day is early today, because I learned that speed can be of the essence to get a Youtube vid before it gets blocked in Germany. :P

Lost in the Darkness by TatyanaOracle
Natasha/Clint; action/angst; 3:09 min
Clint goes MIA during a mission, but Natasha refuses to stop searching for him.

I love vids that tell a whole story. (I stubbornly decided to read this one as open-ended because it's emotional enough as it is... So. He's gonna be fine!)

speaking of getting youtube vids, I just installed Easy YouTube Video Downloader, a useful Firefox add-on. It adds a download button below the vid and you can choose the quality you like. It works great, much better than any downloader I tried before.
