fic recs, art recs, fanfic meta link

I posted a belated contribution for [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic. I LOVE amnesty \o/. I may even be able to squeeze in another challenge reply before the deadline, provided I'm lucky and get an idea for the middle part.

fic recs:
Between the Lines by [livejournal.com profile] friendshipper
gen; PG; 6500 words; Characters: John and Rodney; Spoilers: through "Doppelganger"
Summary: Sometimes, you'd never dream of being friends with someone, especially the most annoying person in Antarctica ... until you get stuck with them in another galaxy.

This is a wonderful story that I find incredibly hard to describe. It's about John and Rodney's friendship, and it's just so *right*. I'm reduced to 'go, read'...

Close Only Counts in Horseshoes and Hand Grenades by [livejournal.com profile] smittywing
Rating: NC-17; McKay/Sheppard; Spoilers: Season One; Length: ~16,000 words
Summary: It should have been a brilliant arrangement. Sex that didn't count was vastly superior to no sex at all and had the added benefit of no attachments and no expectations.

It was really kind of pissing John off.

fanart rec:
A stunning illustration of John and Rodney in an oriental setting: Desert Bride by [livejournal.com profile] leyna55. (If you, like me, can't see the pic in the LJ post, here's a direct link)

youtube vid: David Hewlett shares his favorite lines from recent eps, talking very fast while doing so.

I've been following the OTW/fanfic discussion on Scalzi's blog. Quite interesting. Also, unlike previous pro/antific debates, the tone has been reasonably respectful... well, relatively speaking. Just one rape comparison, a few people who called theft or told ficcers to hide in the dank corners where they belong... if this was Goldberg's blog, at this point of the debate there would have been several mentions of pedophilia, minimum.

Not saying that certain commenters at Scalzi's don't make me want to bang my head against the desk. like. THIS. OW.

Anyway. Today was my off day, and the weather was perfect so I went rollerblading for two hours, and then bicycling, and in the sauna (three times), and bicycling back, then on a walk. It was great. I feel human again. My back is starting to recover from last week, during which I sketched a whole book. (Feels so damn good to finally get some work done, too.) And now I must go and read that fic in which the characters are socks. (Because this is Atlantis and of course there's sockfic. I'm not even surprised anymore *g*)

Thank you again for the recs! Just read the frienshipper story, loved it, obviously missed it first time around, so thank you, you're providing a fabulous public service. :D

I'll try to make time to poke around some of your SGA fic recs again -- at least not the brazenly slash ones ;)
But I've got to say that for me SGA (which I still watch although sometimes a few days later on the DVR -- an appointment show it ain't).. the show itself just doesn't seem to worthy (or able) to support the edifice of fic built on it.

I found the Scalzi OTW discussion by way of libertarian blogger Instapundit. It is nice to see a POV from a pro-writer who's fundamentally friendly toward the concept of fanfic -- and I think is notion of pushing adoption of a Creative Commons-style licensing approach may in fact be better than one hoping for [probably unlikely] action by the courts that could very well provoke backlash. The CC approach is in fact what works for the open source s/w community and also has manifestation in the video game modding community.

Over at my journal I also commented, like Scalzi, on the scope of OTW which actually excludes other areas of fan culture (which coincidentally happen to have more males -- and I'm not so sure the obeisance/claim to feminism is so relevant/helpful to the larger goals)

I love the show, not just because the fic is amazing... it's really the only one that's capturing my attention at the moment. I still watch Bones and NCIS, but that's more casual viewing. I'd say that the stargate 'verse being complex and at the same time having plenty of gaps plays a big role in enabling/inspiring fic. And then there's the characters. I was interested in the characters before I'd even watched the show, just based on some fanworks I'd seen.

If you want to look into SGA genfic, [livejournal.com profile] stargategenrec is also a good place to look.

As to OTW, I'm supporting them since I can (for the most part) get behind their agenda. Though I do agree with you that the feminist aspect is problematic... not that the majority of fic writers isn't female (which some of the posters over there seemed to doubt) but because there's no point in excluding the male writers.

I have no problem with OTW being primarily about fanfic. They're not all-encompassing, but then they don't claim to be, and I think it might be even unfeasible. I'd rather not have an organization representing so many different groups and interests that they're too busy disagreeing about every little thing to actually get much done.

yikes, got to get back to work.

I agree that with SGA there is some fertile ground in in basic character relationships, but the show just does so little with what its got. One recent exception I appreciated was the ep in which Mackay's sister was kidnapped, and Shepard talked the tech billionaire into sacrificing himself as the guinea pig: the Mac/Shep at the end where the former tries to thank the latter who's still uncomfortable with what he did.
But so often we only get old married couple bickering and not much deeper.
I'd also like to see something deeper with Shepard & Ronon in the vein of the whole "fellow warriors" thing.

As to OTW being about fanfic... no problem, but what's goofy is their "fanworks" terminology is much broader. IMO they should reach out more broadly *or* rein in their rhetoric a bit.
