More SGA fanart - now colored

Just finished coloring one of my planetside scenes, I'll probably get another one done later tonight... [edit: added second pic]

Off to enjoy the last sun rays. For once, it's not raining. (The people in this town may be a tad obsessed with the weather ;)

The acrylics are just watered down. I've never tried the clear medium... wonder what the difference is.

Watered down, the acrylics behave almost like watercolor while still wet. I've started to use acrylics even for the ground layer washes on some occasions, particularly when it comes to brown hues... those seem clearer, less likely to get muddy than those done with watercolor.

I love acrylics; I think they're much easier to handle than gouache. (And I'm not even touching oil color; I'm just not patient enough for those.) I used to think that you can't get good hues with acrylics, but that may have been a problem of the brand I was using. I'm using Schmincke PRIMAcryl and Rembrandt colors now, they're very good.

Thanks for the insight into the way you work! I think if you use clear medium, it keeps the paint thick, just more transparent, so it's still thick and buttery and holds your brush strokes. I'm just really impressed at how transparent and vibrant your colors look without that tell-tale acrylic "plastic" look.

I've never tried gouache or oil (OMG yes, patience *and* fumes) -- I'm a novice to painting and only just started watercolors. I do have some Rembrandt acrylics, though, so maybe I'll try combining them with watercolors sometime.
