For the Spike one colored ink (Ecoline) with a bit of watercolor mixed in. The Nate one below is all watercolor (Winsor & Newton). The lineart is done with art pens on drawing board, scanned, cleaned up in Paint Shop Pro, and then laser-printed on hot-pressed watercolor paper.

Nate seems to get particularly out-of-control whenever he's allowed to have a hat. It always makes me happy to see him with one.
