art pic dump

I was throwing out a bunch of old photographs today and came across some photos of illustrations I did ages ago - sometime in the last century - for Offset Litho class. The theme was 'Bestiarium' and I picked The Hunting of the Snark. Hey, there may be a Lewis Carroll fan reading this, who knows. So here... have some beasties.

These are scans of photographs of prints, picture quality isn't too bad though. I re-did the typography... still not great but better than before (Helvetica, ugh, what on earth was I thinking).

preview:

... and, back to avoiding then internets - haven't watched This Mortal Coil yet.

I love that poem and your prints really do his beasties justice.

It's one of my all-time favorite poems. Reciting it helped save my sanity those two summers I worked in a factory.

Do you know the musical version by Roger Daltry? Totally amazing as well (though unfortunately out of stock now, and sold for outrageous prices... when I saw that, first thing I did was burn a copy of my precious CD.)

[identity profile] a2zmom.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't know there was a musical version. Now, I'm properly intrigued.

This is what it looks like (http://www.amazon.com/Hunting-Snark-Cast-London/dp/B00000IIT0/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1197281865&sr=8-2). And wow, the thing sells for over 80 bucks right now. If you ever happen to come across that CD at a decent price, I can only recommend it. And I said Roger Daltry, but actually Mike Batt is the composer. One of my favorite composers, too... he is always very quirky and original, and his music fits the poem to a tee.

I love these. Immensely. There's this Indian poet/artist who wrote nonsense rhymes, and one of them was about these animals who suddenly got their body parts mixed up and the illustrations were as hilarious as the poem was, these make me think of that. Your imagination is awesome.

Thanks.

Your imagination is awesome.
Though apparently somewhat one-tracked at the moment... in the Bandersnatch scene, my mind suggested to replace 'Banker' with McKay and 'Snark' with ZMP. Such is the dire effect of reading too much fanfic.

I LOVE these. If I were an icon-flaunting sort of person, I would love to take one of these as my pixellated representation.

Oh, I'm flattered! (If you ever want an icon, feel free to snag a Snark.)

Awesome!
When I went through a divorce, I changed my middle name from Louise to Alice. So I have a special fondness for Carroll.

Heh.
Actually I adore Hunting Of The Snark, but never properly read Alice In Wonderland (ever since I saw the movie as a 6-year-old and it kind of freaked me out...)

Thanks! I wasn't even sure whether I should post them, to be honest... so much time has passed since I drew them and you know what it's like when you look at older artwork. So it pleases me muchly that people like them. :)

Oh my, how cool!

I especially like the dragon. It looks like it's... somehow embarrassed, and fragile. Really contrasting with what you'd expect from a dragon. :D

I've been meaning to ask you about the recent illustrations you did. I know you can't post any artwork, but I'd be happy to look at the originals in the printed books. Can you tell us the titles of the books? If they're for young enough children, I might actually be interested in buying one, even.
ext_2027: (Default)

[identity profile] astridv.livejournal.com 2007-12-09 10:40 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, sure. Lemme see... I've done quite a few books for Carlsen's Lesemaus series... those are for ages 4-6, I'd say. The most recent is "Nanuk, der kleine Eisbär", which I really like. The next one is about old Egypt, and should come out in January or February... Amazon isn't listing it yet though, but that was the plan.

(Actually I can post pics soon as the books are out, a couple weeks before that even. Publishers just don't like too much info about upcoming projects getting out and I usually err on the side of caution.)

Hang on, I have two pictures from that series somewhere in my scapbook *browse* ah: Oh, here's a cover for a book for Loewe's Bildermaus series (http://pics.livejournal.com/astridv/pic/0003f1ww), that's for beginning readers. Inside page (http://pics.livejournal.com/astridv/pic/0003epac). And these (http://pics.livejournal.com/astridv/pic/00001c1a) two (http://pics.livejournal.com/astridv/pic/00002490) are from the Lesemaus "Im Dorf der Indianer", which is a few years old but one of my personal favorites still. (I wish I could get hold of the paper I used for that.)

"Die Kinder des Manitu. Indianergeschichten" and "Reiterhofgeschichten" are books I illustrated last year, and I really like the Illus. Coming out in Jan or Feb. (I'd hoped for at least December, get us some of that Christmas action... sigh). Those two are for slightly older kids, like 9-10ish. And "Das weiß ich über den Bauernhof", also January, same age.

Well, I guess our son is still a bit too young for any of those. :)

But thanks for the links and infos!

In the first one, your style is clearly visible in the young Indian's face. The older ones are absolutely gorgeous, too. I love the one in the canoe. You really draw water extremely well.

Do they always ask you when there's a new book about Indians? ;))

Well, I guess our son is still a bit too young for any of those. :)

Oh right, I remember you saying something about him being a year, year-and-a-half? In that case, this one (http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/images/3815741246/sr=1-11/qid=1197381982/ref=dp_image_0?ie=UTF8&n=299956&s=books&qid=1197381982&sr=1-11) about a castle could be more up his alley. It's got lots of flaps and doors to look behind, and the gate on the cover moves, too. It was actually hell to draw because I had to change my style mid-project, but the end result turned out pretty cool, I think. It's for age two so I don't know it that'd fit. (I made some for younger kids, too, but I'm not pimping those because I'm not too crazy about them myself.)

Unfortunately, I have a pretty old version - but I'd rather have that old legal one than a cracked new one. :) But that means that the Anisotropic filter doesn't even exist in my version.

Huh, that may be the reason I can't find it - I have PS 6. And yeah, I'm not upgrading if it can be avoided; I'm happy enough I finally start to remember all the features in this version. And it was dirt cheap... not gonna spend a couple hundred bucks on basically the same program.

[personal profile] tinny 2007-12-12 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, he's a year and a half now.

He's getting better with pages (i.e. not tearing or eating them anymore ;)) and I think that book might be something for him soon. He loves books. It took him quite a while to get interested in them, but now we're reading every evening. Always the same five ones, of course... :).

In that case, this one about a castle could be more up his alley.

Thanks for the tip. That sounds cool. You not only drew but wrote it, too?

I have PS 6

Yeah, me too. I wouldn't call the 150 Euros I paid for it 'dirt cheap', but it was the best I could get. The only gripe I have about it is that the brush format (.abr) changed with PS 7. That means that the resources on lj (e.g. [livejournal.com profile] 100x100_brushes are all incompatible with my old version. But almost everyone also posts image sets, and those work almost as well.

Otherwise, there are only a few things that the newer versions can do better, e.g. the brush previews are much better and the brush settings are much more flexible, too. You can't do this with PS 6 brushes, for example. But that's about it.

So I'm not complaining. :) PS 6 is already so extremely powerful that it's overkill for any application I might have for it.

Nah, I guess I got full cover credit because the content is mostly artwork... if memory serves right, I didn't even get the final script for that one, more like a concept with loose descriptions what they wanted on each page. With this kind of picture books, an editor (or sometimes the artist) often writes the text once the pics are done.

Yeah, me too. I wouldn't call the 150 Euros I paid for it 'dirt cheap', but it was the best I could get.

I got mine for 50 € off ebay. OEM version, but it's got all the fixin's so I'm not complaining.

Exactly. Barely scratched the surface, here. I still haven't even moved to brushes and textures, myself.

Do they always ask you when there's a new book about Indians? ;))

Who'd've thought that all those years in high school goofing off and drawing Indians would eventually pay of, eh. *g*

Huh.

Foreshortening, yeah, I'd say. But then I find myself constantly struggling for art/design related vocabulary in English; it's really frustrating. Thank god there's Leo Online!

Holländisch (und Amerikanisch - eine ganz lange Geschichte, damit möchte ich Sie aber nicht belästigen *g*). Ich verstehe Deutsch, aber das Schreiben ist zimmlich schwierig für mich. Die Grammatik!

Btw, I noticed you were nominated in the Art catagory of the McShep Awards. Congratulations!

Heh, thanks, I was thrilled when I saw that someone had nominated my stuff for the McSheps.

Ich verstehe Deutsch, aber das Schreiben ist zimmlich schwierig für mich. Die Grammatik!

Wow, you do sound like a native speaker though. No accent.

Wow-kay, back to English, or Dutch, whatever you prefer. Oh yes, the McSheps, didn't nominate anything myself (I have to admit I had no idea there was such a thing as McShep Awards) but the art and fics I really enjoyed have been nominated, so I don't feel too bad. Voting starts today! :)
ext_2027: (Default)

[identity profile] astridv.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I didn't nominate anything, either. I wish I'd thought of it in time, I think a number of my favourite pieces aren't listed. (Like, Zelenkamatch.com, one of the most hilarious fan comics in the history of the fan comic.)

English, or Dutch, whatever you prefer.

I'll have me some English, please. :). I can actually read Dutch a tiny little bit, but only if I *really* have to. I have a few graphic novels in French and Dutch because I love the artist in question, and I can sort of follow the plot but it's not exactly leisure reading... and I have to sound the Dutch out loud to have it make sense.

[identity profile] trystings.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
"Colonel, Rodney doesn't KNOW he is gay. Just leave it to me." ROFL. I cannot BELIEVE nobody nominated this!

Although, same catagory, A Bed Too Small by Liketheriver, I can't think of that one with the line "Sheppard is sleeping in an itty bitty bed with his ankles hanging off the end!!" going through my head and I'm howling again. And people wonder why I walk around with an idiotic grin pasted on my face all the time.

I love this fandom. *g*

Oh, btw, if you ever need anything translated from Dutch to English, feel free to ask.

These are stunningly fantastic. Your sense of anatomy, the weight and structure and three-dimensionality of them is just marvelous, and each one has so much personality! I have the feeling they are about to step (or slither or flap) right off my screen.
