cover art for Speranza's fic
So. Um. I made an illustrated cover art for
cesperanza's Written By The Victors. I hope I did it justice.

This is actually version b - version a would be in panel format and have as a third element that scene of Sheppard, McKay, and Zelenka standing in the hangar on Quana. But the roommates liked this version better, so I went with this one.
That hangar would make a cool motif, though. And I thought that the market place on Atlantis would have been ideal on the cover, but it would've taken too long to draw and color. Also, I tried to get Teyla and Ronon on there as well, but it would get too cluttered. Those could make great illustrations for chapter headings though. Theoretically.
And I'm not 100% done with it, as usual there're a dozen details I want to fix later... [eta: fixed]
Media: ink, watercolor, ecoline, acrylics

Out of curiosity: is it all computer made, or is part of it traditionally made and then scanned?

No computer, it's all traditionally made and then scanned. It's mostly watercolor and acrylics. Eh, I should edit in which media I used.

Also, you really see the force and power and that explosion and you can almost hear it - and then there is the peace and quiet in the upper part of the image, where the seagulls are flying over the ocean and Atlantis...
And I adore John and Rodney's expressions.

Ooooooh! Those pictures would be so cool!

Ah, so little time, so much interesting stuff to draw... I've never really drawn anything sci-fi before, so maybe that's why I'd really like to have a go at that space ship hangar. And the market scene is so important for that 'verse that I'd be tempted to tackle that even though I my innate laziness leads me to avoid drawing crowds...

The coloring turned out kind of differently than I had in mind (though I can't at all remember *what* I had in mind) but I'm still pleased (if surprised) with how it turned out. :)

btw, your Teyla icon is gorgeous. You captured her features perfectly.

*g* Yup. In fact my few attempts at knitting were not encouraging.
Glad you like!

Please let us see the other pieces, also...the panels left out, the marketplace, Teyla and Ronon. Yes! Just gorgeous.
Don't know yet if I can get around to doing the marketplace (maybe in a rougher, conceptual-art style, that would work pretty well and would be less time-consuming.) I really want to do some colored art of Ronon and Teyla at some point.

The only thing that's bugging me a bit is John's face. There's something off that I can't define. I know that the angle is really hard to get right, I personally stick mostly with straight ahead and profile drawings to avoid the problem altogether. ;) I think the mouth and nose are not exactly placed right in relation to the eyes, maybe?
I hope it's okay to criticize your wonderful work like that. I personally would love to hear constructive criticism on my icons, so I always try to be honest when commenting on other people's artwork. Let me know if that's not okay and I'll concentrate on the positive aspects.
And don't worry, there are *lots* of those in this image!
I *love* Rodney's face, for example. It captures exactly his expressive mimics. And the way the stars merge into the waves. And everyone else already mentioned the contrast between the quiet landscape and the space battle.
I still haven't read all of Speranza's story. I started before I got ill and never got to finish it.

Oh hell, no. No worries, concrit is always welcome. In this line of work you better get used to having your work dissected on a regular basis. ;)
Though in this case I must admit I really like Sheppard's face... though not so much for pitch-perfect likeness but because of how the lines turned out (I was going for a very reduced style, and it's a hit-and-miss with that). Actually it was Rodney's that I was struggling with - his expressions are so hard to get right, I feel. So, very interesting to hear that you think I captured him better. Huh.
