By way of [livejournal.com profile] vom_marlowe I found this very useful tutorial on improving Photoshop performance:
Getting the most out of your RAM

I followed several of the suggestions, and as a result Photoshop is suddenly running much, much faster. (I worked with it for hours today, and not once did I feel the urge to kick my computer.)

Oh yay!!! I'm so glad it worked for you. Isn't it a neat tutorial?

It's really effective. I haven't even tried out all the tips and it already makes a huge difference. The pixel doubling seems to help a lot. Maybe I won't even need to buy more RAM for now. Good timing, as I actually need PS for my rl work for once (I'm inserting some cloth patterns into my characters' garments... which isn't any faster than drawing them by hand, but it's a pretty cool effect, I think.)

Working like this, now this is downright fun. Before, I wasn't really inclined to try out anything new at all - trial and error is just no fun when an error can cost you another 10 seconds of wasted time.
