fan art - SGA
I checked out a few eps of SGA, and now it is eating my brain just a little. Spent some time digging through heaps of fic. There's a wealth of stories out there, one doesn't even know where to start. I think I might, possibly, get into this show. I ordered the Season One DVDs... what the hell, Amazon offers them at a price that is hard to resist.
I'm itching to do some fan art, but the current book is still not quite done and I have to get it out of the way before I can concentrate on anything else. But I couldn't resist entirely... here, a few sketches of John Sheppard.

(Thanks to stargatecaps.com)
There, got that out of my system, now I can get back to work with new motivation. Drawing fan art clears my brain somehow.
I'm thinking, four more days, then I should be done with this book. Maybe by then the infernal rain will have stopped. (Seriously, all these posts about heat waves and temperatures of 100F and higher are making me insanely jealous... I love hot weather.)
Um, Bones fic recs coming soon, just need some spare time to write that post...

I'm pimping this. Well, *you,* really. Ahem.

Well, it's a new thing. Actually it was the fan art and fic that drew me in.
I watched "Hide and Seek" a few days ago, to check out the show. And there's this moment where they want to set up the trap for that shadow creature, and I'm thinking, okay, next thing McKay will offer to push the button... and then he, uh, doesn't. ;) I laughed out loud at that scene. I liked the ep well enough until then but that's the moment the show really *clicked* for me. Which most shows never do.
Pimpage would be cool, I don't think there're a lot of SGA fans reading this LJ...

but in the third one you have really caught the dorkiness that is John Sheppard.
Oh, I'm happy you say that. I don't know the character all that well yet, having watched only five episodes, so I wasn't entirely sure if I managed to capture his personality.

The last portrait in particular is just so Sheppard. I love his smirk :D
err broken tag reposting
Also I have a lot of SGA (http://koalathebear.livejournal.com/tag/stargate+atlantis) pic spams - although you might have to scroll back quite a way to find the earlier episodes so you don't spoil yourself :D So happy you have discovered this series.

I had a feeling you were gonna say that *g*. I watched an ep of SG-1 years ago but it didn't catch my attention the way SGA did. But, you never know...

I tried to get into the show when it first started, because it had MacGyver in it, and I saw a Season 7 episode many years later, but it wasn't until about a year after that I finally got sucked in. It might be worth another try. Ten seasons, and loads of incredible fic to go with them.
Okay, I'll stop now. LOL.

Personally, I'm more interested in McKay than Sheppard, but he has an interesting face, doesn't he? I don't draw guys that often, but Sheppard has so many interesting expressions.
Love your sketches! I think what impresses me most about your art is how you only use a couple of lines here and there and still you manage to produce such an amazing likeness. I wish I could do that!

I love McKay, he's definitely my favorite character right now. Sheppard's face says, Draw me! The eyes, the hair, the expressions... the guy is fun to draw. I'll probably try some of the other characters as well when I got the time.

Thanks, glad you like them. It's fascinating - by reducing the faces to only the basic lines and shaded areas, One gets a much better feeling for which lines are important in conveying the... personality. Mm, I don't know if that makes sense.
It's weird how sometimes a line can be just half a millimeter off and suddenly it's like you're looking at an entirely different person. In any case, these really help me with understanding portrait and facial structures in general better, (which I still find hard as hell.)
I didn't know you draw. Got any links handy?

You should see the art and the fic produced in that fandom! I don't know if you saw this earlier post (http://astridv.livejournal.com/87112.html), where I rec'd a vid and a comic, both fantastic.
I probably should, though, because it seems like all the people who like the same shows I do love SGA too.
Yeah, looks like more people on my flist are into this show than I thought.
Re: ... forgot to add
I agree, I just can't do it myself. :-) It looks so easy when people can do it, but it's really much more difficult than drawing a detailed portrait. Well, in my opinion anyway.
I didn't know you draw. Got any links handy?
I just draw a little, and it's all safely kept in my notebooks offline. :-) I'm not an artist or anything. I've done some print things for my local library, but it's really just a hobby.
Actually, come to think of it, I did do some fanart for Star Trek many, many years ago, but I don't think it's online anywhere anymore. Which is probably just as good. :-)

*goes to check* Wow, that comic was really original and funny! I'll check out the vid when I have the time too. Thanks!

p.s.: and you like Bones? I'll definitely have to check out the fic recs! Bones is my shiny new fandom. I'm currently working my way through season one.

I'm going to start Servare Vitas now. I saw the gorgeous cover art you made for it. Wow!
I friended you - I hope that's ok. ;) Even though I would be flattered, there's no need to friend me back. You can see from my latest posts that I mostly post about RL these days. Being a mother is still interesting to me. ;) Unfortunately, it takes up all my time I used to spend reading and watching shows and drawing and painting and making lj icons. *sigh*
I'm working my way through season one of SGA right now. :)
Hee. :) Welcome! It's mostly a guilty pleasure fandom - the canon writing sucks, but the fanfic is excellent. It's a huge fandom here on lj, and I enjoy it a lot. Let me know how you like SGA. :)

You draw? You paint? *curious*
Thanks! I've checked out your recs and have started some preliminary reading. Very cool!
There is some good stuff out there, but it pales in comparison to SGA fandom. I don't know if that's because procedurals are harder to write for, or because the pool of writers is just so small. Probably a bit of both.
I'm going to start Servare Vitas now. I saw the gorgeous cover art you made for it. Wow!
Thanks. :) That fic, in the later chapters, is so intense that I had to draw that fan art to clear my head. I love it when that kind of inspiration happens.
Hee. :) Welcome! It's mostly a guilty pleasure fandom - the canon writing sucks, but the fanfic is excellent.
I even like the canon so far. I mean, it doesn't have the brilliance of 'Angel' but then what does. But I care about the characters, and that's what makes a show work for me.

Yes, exactly! In that s1 SGA ep where it first appears that they find a way back to earth? I thought, 'damn, you're making it way too easy for them,' and hoped there'd be a catch.
Season four of Angel and season six of Buffy are my favorites... and even a lot of the fans dislike those for being too dark. But even when those shows are at their darkest, there's usually still some humor to be found. I like the blend of dark and light. (When it comes to fic I usually stay away from the really dark and angsty stuff...)
Let me know how you like SGA. :)
I'm over halfway through s1 (watched The Brotherhood yesterday) and still liking it muchly. I also watched a few s3 eps already (Tao Of Rodney, because I was told it is very good, and it is ^_^)... seems like this show is not as arc-heavy as the Whedonverse ones and it doesn't matter quite as much if you watch it out of order. But I'm mostly trying to stay unspoiled for the later seasons.
part 1
Hee. :) *waves* Where exactly are you? I'm in Munich (but I'd never put that in my user info either ;)).
You draw? You paint? *curious*
The only non-digital drawing that I scanned in is here:
http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Cinema/5432/manips/divers.html
It's the third from the top - and already a few years old. As usual with b/w pencil scans it doesn't come out all that impressive. ;/
I am embarrassed about most of the stuff that's on that web page - amazing how bad I was a few years ago. Still not all that good, mind, but there's a difference. :D
I haven't made any non-digital stuff in the last year - and what I did is only some silk painting I made as presents for friends. Mostly, these days I make fannish backgrounds and icons.
It has often tickled me to draw my son over the last year, but I never actually did it. :( It's almost impossible to draw him while he's moving, and when he's finally asleep, I have my hands full of sleeping baby or I need to sleep, too. The tiny, tiny rest of the time I am glad I have some time to watch TV. A dilemma. ;)
I don't know if that's because procedurals are harder to write for, or because the pool of writers is just so small. Probably a bit of both.
I haven't thought about the 'procedurals' problem much yet, but I tend to agree. The only procedural fandom I know with a lot of fic is House. It seems to be the exception. CSI, on the other hand, with interesting characters and a huge viewer base: hardly anything good.
That fic, in the later chapters, is so intense that I had to draw that fan art to clear my head. I love it when that kind of inspiration happens.
Yeah, that's exactly what got me to draw Snape and Harry. I still love that fic to pieces.
I'm having a bit of trouble with Servare Vitas so far - I'm about one third in. I have a huge aversion to weapons. I like the introspective style a lot, though, so I'm trying to ignore the weapons.
I even like the canon so far. I mean, it doesn't have the brilliance of 'Angel' but then what does.
:D Let me think. That's a tough one. Battlestar Galactica. Firefly (ok, Whedon, so it probably doesn't count ;) ). Hmm.... Farscape. I think that's about it. :D
I thought, 'damn, you're making it way too easy for them,' and hoped there'd be a catch.
Yes, me too. When I read the show description I imagined them trekking from planet to planet, always trying to evade the Wraith. No supplies, no gadgets. That would have been my kind of show. Oh, right, that was Firefly. Minus the horses. ;)
I still like the first season a lot, though, and I am still watching SGA. I will very probably continue watching till the end. I'm not even a slasher, but John and Rodney hold a place in my heart now. It's weird. :) But I've seen people radically averse to slash start to succumb to John and Rodney, so... maybe it's inevitable.
Season four of Angel and season six of Buffy are my favorites... and even a lot of the fans dislike those for being too dark.
I know! I started on Buffy with the Musical in season six, and saw all the worst turf wars over B/A or B/S. I watched the earlier seasons later on, but they were too fluffy for me, basically. I had watched Angel - on German TV even - before Buffy. I liked it because it was darker. I think I liked the second half of the third season best. That was before Connor got to be a teenager. Actually, parts of Angel season four and five were also good. Oh, the good old times. *G*
Who was your favorite character or pairing on Buffy and Angel?
part 2
I like the blend of dark and light.
Absolutely. Whedon's writing was perfect for that. SGA is pretty humorous, too. They got lucky with the character of McKay and with David Hewlett.
When it comes to fic I usually stay away from the really dark and angsty stuff...
For me, it depends. I like fics that explore dark aspects, but I prefer it if they end on a hopeful note. Character death is not hopeful enough. ;)
Although... some of the best fic in the fandom is written by
Her fic is like Shakespearean drama: everyone dies. Most of the time, the universe is destroyed along with them, too. :)
I'm over halfway through s1 (watched The Brotherhood yesterday) and still liking it muchly.
Oh, yeah, Storm/Eye is so amazing, I could watch it over and over. The Defiant One rocks, too. Oh, that reminds me: You're German, you'll probably get a laugh out of
http://www.viddish.org/sga.html
Look for "Space Taxi, German version"
seems like this show is not as arc-heavy as the Whedonverse ones and it doesn't matter quite as much if you watch it out of order.
Not extremely arc-heavy, no. I personally watch everything in order, even if it kills me. (Especially the first season of Farscape was tough. ;) ) I don't like spoilers, either.
Of course, SGA has the usual cast changes at the end of each season, so you'll see who bites the dust if you jump too far ahead. But otherwise, no problem. The character actions are not all that logical most of the time anyway. ;)

Re: part 2
I'm in Münster.
I'm having a bit of trouble with Servare Vitas so far - I'm about one third in. I have a huge aversion to weapons. I like the introspective style a lot, though, so I'm trying to ignore the weapons.
I actually had the same trouble in the beginning... living in a country with strict gun control rules, the thought of someone driving around with that kind of weaponry makes me cringe, law enforcement or not. However, I told myself that the enthusiasm for firearms is in character for both Booth and Brennan. And in the further course of the story the technical detail wrt weaponry is going to get quite important, by adding to the overall sense of realism.
Yes, me too. When I read the show description I imagined them trekking from planet to planet, always trying to evade the Wraith. No supplies, no gadgets. That would have been my kind of show.
There's an epic ST:Voyager fic, written by Macedon and Peg Robinson, I don't know if you've read it: "The Rose And The Yew Tree". It's that kind of scenario... Voyager on the run, dwindling supplies, the ship damaged and held together by duct tape, the situation getting more hopeless each day. Terrific story.
But I've seen people radically averse to slash start to succumb to John and Rodney, so... maybe it's inevitable.
Yeah. I'm mostly reading John/Rodney friendship fic right now - I discovered that
I had watched Angel - on German TV even - before Buffy.
... the less said about the dubbing, the better...
Who was your favorite character or pairing on Buffy and Angel?
Favorite character: Angel, hands down. Followed by Kate Lockley (I so wish she hadn't left the show so early) and Connor. Fave pairing: Angel/Cordy, until CC got written off the show (there was almost no good fic to be found afterword). I'm also rather partial to Angel/Spike, though I prefer genfic with heavy subtext.
Absolutely. Whedon's writing was perfect for that. SGA is pretty humorous, too. They got lucky with the character of McKay and with David Hewlett.
Really lucky. I love his rapid-fire way of talking, like his mouth is trying to keep up with his brain.
For me, it depends. I like fics that explore dark aspects, but I prefer it if they end on a hopeful note. Character death is not hopeful enough. ;)
Hopeful note, yes. I loved, loved, loved Synechdochic's "Freedom", character death notwithstanding. I just need some light along with the dark.
