fan art: Bones
I did a quick illustration* of a scene from
newscaper's fantastic Bones novel 'Servare Vitas'. (If you haven't already read this story, you can find a complete chapter list here. Or read it at ff.net)

(The scene in question is from chapter 21)
*The drawing and coloring was quick anyway... processing it on the computer took ages, as my Photoshop Fu is very week indeed.

In reality, Brennan would not have a lot of strength in that strike with her hip pushed back like that and without more tension in her pulling arm - but it's a great action pic. I hope you don't mind me saying this, it by no means takes anything away from your beauitful drawing! I'm just a karate geek. :-)
Interesting that you went with a soto shuto uchi (inside out, palm down) - I always imagined her doing a uchi shuto uchi (outside in, palm up) but the story didn't specify this.
Like the others, I would love to see more. I loved SV and your art complements it so nicely!

Yeah. I did Aikido for a couple years, and a bit of Ju Jutsu, and I just took up Ving Tsun, and the martial arts geek in me informs me 'this is not good technique'. But when I did it correctly... you know, fist drawn back to her side, better body stance... it just didn't look dynamic at all, no matter what I tried. Very, very weird.

*g* I considered both but from the sequence newscaper described, I figured the shuto uchi would probably come from the inside. (I actually had to google both, because we didn't have any strikes or punches in Aikido, and in Ju Jutsu we used the German words. Why is the outward one called 'shuto uchi' anyway, if 'uchi' means 'inside'? That confused me.)
Re: <3
I can totally see that, sometimes martial arts does look kind of silly. :-) I would never even have mentioned it if it weren't for the fact that the author specified her techniques. But I'm all for fudging the details if the end result is better. And the drawing looks very cool!

Actually, in that sense "uchi" means strike, not inside. "Uchi waza" are strikes, and "Tzuki wasa" are punches. "Shuto uchi" means knife hand strike (a strike with the pinky finger side of the hand). Direction is not specified. "Uchi shuto uchi" specifies that it strikes from the outside in (palm up) and "Soto shuto uchi" means that it goes from the inside out (palm down).

That is so cool! Ving Tsun must be very different from what you've done before? I've never tried anything like it.
I have done a little Aikido and Ju jutsu because they practice in our dojo, but Karate is my main thing. If you ever wonder anything about the lingo I am the person to talk to - we use the Japanese names for techniques exclusively. My dojo is very strict and traditional.
Re: <3
Ah, now it makes sense. Utsu, duh. That language has way too many homophones.

It's the complete opposite, from Aikido anyway. Where Aikido is smooth and redirects the attacker's energy, Ving Tsun seems very no-nonsense, direct, and to the point. And really rather brutal by comparison. ;) It's all very informal too... no bowing or other forms of Asian etiquette. Takes some getting used to, but so far I'm intrigued. I want to try it for a semester and see how I like it.
I find Karate very interesting as well, but I always sucked when it came to kicking, and Karate has too much of that for my taste. That'd be too frustrating trying to master them. Our Ving Tsun teacher says we won't even get into kicks for the first two years, which sounds good to me.
Uuuh!
Would love to see more when you get the time (I think I mentioned it before but might I suggest a Booth in full sniper gear? Hah, been dreaming about that for ages!! ;))

I do remember. Um, I can't guarantee anything but I'll see what I can do. :)
I'm actually thinking about doing some Bones comic artwork, too. Just that that's more time-consuming than anything else. But it's tempting. Maybe during hiatus, when we'll have to entertain ourselves.
Re: Uuuh!
Once again, thank you for sharing and for remembering my obsession with Booth in snipergear! ;o)

You know this circular fandom debate (one of the many) of how there're no popular strong female characters in fandom? Next time I'll point them to 'Bones'.
