The incredibly talented [livejournal.com profile] jwaneeta has posted Torchwood fan art.

Here's an nifty little LJ tool I ran across at fandom_wank: LJ thread unfolder, works with Firefox (you need to install Greasemonkey first, then Unfolder). It was easy to install, and it's already come very handy for unfolding collapsed threads.

Interesting article on the economic effects of file sharing: Piracy is Good? How Battlestar Galactica killed broadcast tv. It presents a different viewpoint from the usual clamors of "Piracy kills the entertainment industry!". I find the argument plausible and the business model suggested here is quite interesting.

Speaking for myself, almost all CDs that I bought in the last couple of years - the only exception being sountracks - I bought because a fanvid had introduced me to the band. When the 'Bones' pilot was leaked onto the internet half a year before the show started, I was actually wondering at the time if Fox themselves might not have had something to do with it... word-of-mouth is a most valuable tool to raise the profile of the show.

Whoa, thank you! I've always wanted to unfold threads!

Also, Cyn does rock. And not just in Vegas clubs. *g*

She does rock. Heh, btw, it was your post about your Vegas adventures that sent me over to Cyn's journal. :)

About piracy: I have been on nostalgic trip to my teenage years of by downloading The Uncanny X-men volumes 1 to 463!. I found it amusing and interesting to follow the changes in the comics over nearly 40 years. But I did feel little guilty when I “pirated” theses comics, and I thought about what you, as an artist living of your skills, feels about this?

Oh, interesting question. One that probably won't be answered in two or three sentences, so I'll get back to it next time I take a break from work.

(which shall be soon if all goes well)

(sorry, got sidetracked for a bit) Ok, how I feel about pirating comics... first of all, as an artist I don't really consider that a threat, I guess. Reading a comic on-screen is uncomfortable and impractical, even more so than in the case of novels. I downloaded several Buffy comics legally from the Dark Horse site, and once I'd read a few pages into them I tried to buy the print versions of those I liked. So, I haven't given that particular issue much thought at all. (Then again, I also print my fanfic so I'm maybe extreme in my dislike of reading at the computer.)

But anyway, so far there's been no sign that e-novels are going to replace printed books anytime soon... readers like to take their books and comics, read them on the bus or in the tub. You could print it yourself, but the costs and the effort are kind of prohibitive of that. All that goes even more for full-color comics. So I would file the, ehem, shady activity you refer to, under 'advertising'. Same as a couple thousand European fans downloading the latest episode of their favorite show and spreading the word in their home country.

Movie files are a different animal from comics, obviously, since there's little difference in quality between watching the original and the copy. FWIW, my own policy is, I download (without a hint of a bad conscience) that what I can't obtain legally. If I can get it on Amazon or Ebay, I try get it there instead. Ok, on occasion I downloaded *coughadvdripcough* but that's usually where my guilty conscience kicks in. Usually, if I really like a show I downloaded, I buy the DVD set once it becomes available.
I guess what it boils down to, if I feel my activities don't cut into the market, I don't have an ethical problem with it.

It seems that we don't see things so different, when it comes to copying. So that I feel, that I can rec (advertise) one of the comics that I ahmm downloaded. I have little to no idea, on what you like in comics, but when I fell over ALIAS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alias_%28comics%29) (not related to tv-show) I found that the drawing style, did It remind me of yours. The story is about a retired c-rated super heroine Jessica Jones, who gave up super heroining after a very traumatic incident. The story and the drawings support each so very well. So if you want the complete story, I can upload it to a file sharing service or if you have Msn can you upload it, from my account or else can I give you a torrent link.

I have little to no idea, on what you like in comics,

I've been thinking for a while about doing a regular comic recs thing on my blog... like rec one album each week. I heard one or two people express interest and I think it could be fun. Just have to find the time.

I'd love to take a look at the series you mention. I haven't heard of it yet. I rarely read Marvel comics, or even much superhero comics at all, though there're of course exceptions. Frank Miller's "Dark Night Returns" cured me of some prejudices against the superhero genre.

File sharing sounds easiest. Or maybe you can just email me a few pages for a taste? (since I won't read a whole series on the computer anyway, knowing my reading habits)... My email is thisusername at livejournal.com

I just found your mails in my other mail folder. (I'm not using that other addy much any more, since it's become unreliable. No idea why the new gmail one didn't work; so far I've had no problems with it...)

Anyway, thanks! I'll take a look at it tomorrow.

Wow, I took a quick look - you were right, the artwork looks fantastic! I love the layout. I must try to get some of these books.

I found that the drawing style, did It remind me of yours.

*blush* no, really...

Ooh, high-value post ^_^ I've taken the script, and the piracy article's fascinating. If we could get a legal source of reliably available, high-quality, no-fear-of-virus-infection-or-ISP-cracking-down-or-getting-served-a-court-order TV episodes, I would happily watch those even with unskippable ad breaks built in. Simplest mimicry of the current system, and I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Ooh, high-value post ^_^

Yeah, I figured after boring y'all with my work progress, I owed the flist something more interesting. ;)

I believe a lot of people would prefer legal downloads if they had the choice. I would. And looks like they're already moving in that direction, legal dl's of tv shows right the next day. Only I understand those are so far not available to us Europeans, due to licensing reasons? So that'd be another hurdle to cross; they need to make it available worldwide right from the start... fans are no longer willing to wait a year or longer.

I shudder at the thought of unskippable ads though. I'd prefer an unobtrusive logo in a corner.

[identity profile] frimfram.livejournal.com 2007-01-10 08:34 am (UTC)(link)
Nooo! You're not boring. And your workrate makes my jaw drop.

Yes - it's driving me crazy! Heroes is available legally right after the show airs, on the network's website. But if I click, it tells me the download's not available in my country (a UK channel is acquiring the show in the spring) - though not before letting me watch all the adverts! Which... fine. Americans pronounce 'Listerine' wrong ^_^

I'd much rather not see ads either, though some shows are written so successfully to meet the series-of-ad-breaks structure that I alllllmost miss the breaks when watching DVDs or less legal versions. There's been moments of high emotional impact where I'm all "...damn! Give me a moment to process this/bite my own fist off in OMG!"

Well, I was boring myself in any case. *g* (And I only work that much if it can't be helped... I'm really looking forward to taking a few days off, just goofing around and doing fan art.)

But if I click, it tells me the download's not available in my country (a UK channel is acquiring the show in the spring) - though not before letting me watch all the adverts!

Adverts without the product, that's a new one.

It's the same way if you want to receive British satellite tv here in Germany. Technology-wise it's no problem. Sky wants my business. I want to give them my money. But because of licensing deals, I can't officially buy a viewing card on the continent. Fortunately there're creative ways around that, but it's an unnecessary hassle.
