Today the roomie was googling for next Friday's Dinner-with-Buffy recipe, and found this (sorry, it's in German...):

You know what the craziest part is? The roommate says she wants to try that.

And I can't tell whether she's kidding.

I've fallen behind on answering email and LJ comments and stuff but I'll catch up tomorrow. On the other hand, my page for today is almost colored and already looks pretty shiny.

I can't read german but it's pretty well known that you can cook fish in the dishwasher, we used to talk about in my diet classes I remember when I was doing Weight Watchers.

Seriously? I was 99% sure that it was a joke.

Huh. Now I'm almost tempted to try it myself. (The recipe says that the dishwasher has just the right temperature for fish).

I googled it and it came up with over 200,000 hits, seriously

check these out, just the first 3 that came up

The things you learn on the internet.

Ah. The first link says that you shouldn't add detergent. The German recipe fails to mention that.

I'm intrigued. I might really try this out, if only to see if it really works. Though I wonder why they all say to use aluminum foil; a tupperware box seems like a more suitable choice, 'cause, watertight...

[identity profile] malkingrey.livejournal.com 2006-12-14 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Foil probably conducts the heat from the hot water to the fish better. A tupperware box, by putting air around the fish, would instead serve to insulate it.

Hey, I've seen it done on TV. The Surreal Gourmet did it on his show....I thought it looked pretty weird. Just remember not to put soap in the dishwasher!

Yeah, that was the part that made me boggle particularly hard, for the recipe above fails to mention that small fact.

That makes sense. It might work with tiny boxes... Maybe I'll try both and compare, when I'm in an experimental mood.

This is the strangest conversation I've read on LJ all day. :D

It does have a surreal quality. Heh.

BWAH! Considering dishwasher liquid is poisonous, I would hope not.

I wonder if you can put in a few dirty dishes though, so as not to use a whole dishwasher cycle just for some salmon. That seems not too energy-efficient.

I'm giving this way too much thought.

I'll eat some delicious raw matjes herring instead, and go back to the drawing bord.

[identity profile] orchid-slayer.livejournal.com 2006-12-14 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Just for giggles we did that once. Be sure you seal the foil up tight, so no water gets in. And yes. NO detergent..lol. It really does work though.

[identity profile] astridv.livejournal.com 2006-12-14 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
No detergent, check. But what about dirty dishes, I wonder? Because otherwise it seems like the waste of a perfectly good washing cycle...

[identity profile] orchid-slayer.livejournal.com 2006-12-15 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
We ran ours on the 'pots and pans' cycle, without anything but the foil wrapped fish in it.

[identity profile] medusa81.livejournal.com 2006-12-14 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, that actually make a strange kind of sense, except for the bit where the German recipe mentions the clean cuttlery...

Glad to read you're not actually supposed to use detergent, that seemed pretty funky...

Why buy an expensive steamoven, when you've got a dishwaser...Might try this over the holidays (if my mother in law will let me...she's kinda protective of her dishwasher :o))

she's kinda protective of her dishwasher :o))

I'm still more worried about the fish... or rather, eating it. ;)

[identity profile] medusa81.livejournal.com 2006-12-14 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I was when I thought you added detergent and everything but if it's just an empty run it sould be clean steam, right...So I'n not really worried about eating it. Having pictures of the fish splattered all over the insides of the dishwasher though...
