Bones fic recs - part 5. Plus musings on a Bonesfic archive

More 'Bones' recs... all shorter fics this time, plus a few WIPs. I have a number of finished longer casefile-style fics all printed out and ready to read, just have to find the time to really dig into them. I hope I'll have some recs for novel-length fanfic soon.

One-shots/shorter fic

Questions and Absences, part 2 by [livejournal.com profile] tesla321
Genre: "Bones"/"House" crossover, sequel to "Conversations Between Doctors" and "Examinations"
Spoilers: 3.01 of "House" and 2.01 of "Bones", but just barely.
Tesla's laconic Brennan/House stories have convinced me that those two shows are meant to be together.

Conversation in a Diner by [livejournal.com profile] tesla321
Spoilers: Immediately after 2.01 (The Titan On the Tracks)
Short Booth/Brennan missing scene that simply nails the characters. The dialog couldn't be more spot-on.

Of Confessions and Silences by [livejournal.com profile] like_electric
Spoilers: The Truth In The Lye
"Summary: Booth tells Brennan about Cam. Short One-shot."

Disgusted by [livejournal.com profile] simple__man
cute dialog piece. One-shot

Roll Credits by lone astronomer / [livejournal.com profile] merrymeerkat
"Angela would be turning in her grave. BrennanHodgins with a smattering of Hodgela and Semperance."
Unusual ficlet. A very bleak - and fascinating - glimpse at a possible future.

Booth/Brennan: One Sentence Challenge II by [livejournal.com profile] leni_ba
"SUMMARY: 50 sentences... The difference with the last one, is that in this one B/B is an official pairing. Some spoilers for Season One, here and there, but it's mostly future 'maybe, perhaps, who knows?' stuff. No Season Two Spoilers"

No Sign of Life by [livejournal.com profile] atrosie
A Halloween story... I found it genuinely creepy.

When UST Goes Wild by [livejournal.com profile] damnskippytoo
"Summary: Bones has a gun and this is why she really shouldn’t. Character death (it’s okay, you probably won’t care)."
Parody. Heh.

WIP:

Bad Deposit by nattysuits
A new lead takes Temperance Brennan closer to her father and Max Keenan’s dangerous past too close to his daughter.
2 chapters up

Red Fish, Blue Fish by lone astronomer / [livejournal.com profile] merrymeerkat
Summary: The star witness in a ten million dollar fraud case goes missing from Witness Protection. Three months later, a body turns up at a construction site wearing her clothes. She just happens to be three inches too short....
2 chapters up

Her Biggest Fan by [livejournal.com profile] mizzzbonesfan
casefile, 1 chapter so far

Hubris and Humility by [livejournal.com profile] bellwings
[eta: 7 chapters up so far]

last not least: [livejournal.com profile] bones_news - a Bones newsletter in the format of the [livejournal.com profile] su_herald

On a slightly different topic, I've been idly pondering an archive for Bones fic independent of the behemoth that is fanfiction.net, with its regularly scheduled server crashes. I'm thinking, something like the Buffy Fiction Archive, where everyone could upload their completed fic so ideally we readers could find a lot of fic collected in one place. I've been fiddling with the code of our BBFA, which is powered by the same auto-archive software as the BFA.

Mainly I just exchanged the names of the characters, purged the database, and got rid of the design, and I now have what could be used as a template for an auto-archive. All the cgi scripts - like upload, search engine, etc. - are tested and should be running properly. So, the only thing it would need would be a spiffy web design (mainly a nice banner and background colour, it shouldn't take long), someone interested in hosting it (I can't) and someone who wants to play archivist (I don't). If anyone is interested, take a look at this test version. Want, take, have. Note: I only have four test files uploaded so the search engine doesn't have much to find at this point.

The archive is Perl-based so some prior knowledge of that would be useful (though not essential... I fumbled my way around the code using the trial-and-error method which works, too.)

Many thanks for your Bones fics' rec! ASAP I have a computer again, I will surely return to bookmark this post. (I'm using The Spouse's computer, so I am not able to bookmark anything.)

I love your idea for a Bones archive! May I add a suggestion? If it's easily done, add a link for 'ship and one for season.

I've just tested it, and it's lovely and works really well.

Thank you so much, Astrid. You are doing great work for us Bones' fans! ::hugs::

Ship is already searchable (under 'pairing'), season is a great idea. Easily added, too. It's a very nifty bit of archive software, I've come to really like it.

I wouldn't mind hosting it...i've got so much bandwidth going to waste on my server, but I wouldn't want to play archivist, i just don't have the time or motivation at the moment. It's an awesome idea though, the script is actually not bad, I've never heard of it before, only worked with eFiction myself, but I like that it allows you to link to offsite stories. Awesome!

Thanks, I might get back to that. I also heard from someone else who wants to do the archive thing... we'll see, maybe this fandom will get its own archive after all.

The link option is very cool. And links are added in no time, whereas it takes a little time to prepare the story files for upload. So even if people can't be bothered to do that, or don't want their fic archived somewhere else, they could still set a quick link.

The archive software can even read text formatting html tags, so stuff like italics and bold face doesn't get lost.

She's got it up already. Check it out (http://bonesfic.com) - it looks awesome.

Oooh! Bones archive! That is a fantasmic idea. I'll throw in a few hours of effort for a banner/colour scheme if you let me know what sort of thing you're looking for. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to play archivist - I've got my hands full with school already. Plus, I have zero knowledge of Perl.

Also, I want to squee a little bit because my fics got recc'ed! Yay, thank you!

You're very welcome. I'm a fan of plotfic, so I'm really happy when writers go for actual casefiles... I imagine those must be a particular challenge to write in this fandom, with the squintspeak and all; and there're not that many good ones out there yet.

re: archive... actually already taken care of, check this out: bonesfic.com (http://bonesfic.com). [livejournal.com profile] traciepwns told me she'd secured the bonesfic domain, which is all kinds of cool. It looks really good, too.

I think a Bones archive is a fantastic idea!

It is! And we got one now (http://bonesfic.com). [livejournal.com profile] traciepwns had the same idea, and even a proper domain. Now all we need is to get as many people as possible to post there... :)

I just found out you rec'd my parody fic for which I am grateful. Thanks!
