Comic: Angel/Fray crossover by yhlee and astridv - page 4/12

Yo. Page four is finally finished. Page five is finished too, as a matter of fact... but I had the moderately brilliant idea to try lettering on a separate sheet. I thought it might save time. (It doesn't.) So, the next page might take until tomorrow, depending on how fast the lettering goes.

In the meantime, here's page four,

...and a teensy preview of page five

I've also reposted the first three, in better quality and with a few details fixed:
page one/two, and disclaimer
page three

I have no words for that power shot of Fray. None.

*love*

Fray's cool. Fun to draw!

This is just fantastic. Your Angel is perfect, and I adore the story! Brava to you both!!

I was so happy when I approached [livejournal.com profile] astridv and she said she was willing to draw the comic. I am pleased that you like the story!

Also, it's like making her draw lots of pictures of Angel and Gunn and Fray alllll for meeeeee...

Gorgeous art work, and an intriguing storyline! What more could a fan of Angel and Fray ask for? Except more, please!
Kudos to you both for your great work.

Heh. On it's way. Though I just had a rather large glass of wine, so no more lettering will happen tonight. (I could try, but with the result would be... interesting.)

I think an "Angel, the slightly tipsy special edition" three-panel strip would be very entertaining. Although of course it would also have to have Spike.

Wine to lubricate the creative process, totally good.

Works well with drawing and colouring, doesn't work at all with lettering. After I was done colouring today, I even had to go rollerblading first 'cause my hands weren't steady enough for the lettering.

I once played Mikado on New Year's Eve: I had drunk less than half a glass of wine but was too clumsy to get any of the little sticks out, and I'm normally good at this game. It was rather enlightening, because I felt hundred percent sober.

Thanks muchly for linking :)

Ooh, ooh, ooh! Jeez, your colors are brilliant. Right now I'm fixating on your fabric creases, which are gems of economy and naturalism. *g*

You should've heard me cursing and bitching during the day (as I always do). And then, when I'd already finished prepping the scans, my friend Steffi came and remarked, "But, her hair in the comic is blue and pink, not brown." *cough* I dunno how it's possible to overlook something like that, but apparently, well. Yeah.

So I changed the haircolour in PSP... would've taken just a minute to fix the original with brush and watercolour, but then I'd have had to scan and prep the pages all over again. Like I said, many curses could be heard.

But I like the end result. Glad you like the colouring, too. :o)

[identity profile] yhlee.livejournal.com 2006-08-23 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
At least it's not like Messina, who thinks Angel's eyes are blue-gray half the time. Like, what gives? And whoever it was that was coloring Wesley's eyes brown. Y'all caught it. :-)

And the colors are indeed gorgeous.

Incidentally, have you read the Connor spotlight? I couldn't get one of the cheaper ones at the first comic store I tried (they only had the retailer incentive whatsit left, for twice the price--like, no) so I'm curious. And the Doyle spotlight was nice, but rather slight, which is a pity, because there was plenty of room to tell a story there without having to worry about violating canon.

Okay. I will stop spamming your page.

[identity profile] astridv.livejournal.com 2006-08-23 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, spam away *g*

I haven't read any of these yet; haven't been to the comic shop in weeks. I haven't even magaged to read my 'Tales of the Vampires' that I bought, though my friend keeps telling my it's really good.

I'll make a trip to the Tom's comic shop tomorrow. I hope Tom's remembered to reserve me a copy of the Connor spotlight! These come out almost faster than one can read 'em...

[identity profile] yhlee.livejournal.com 2006-08-23 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I liked Tales of the Vampires, although some stories were stronger than others--what you'd expect for something with an anthology/frame-story setup.

I'd been looking forward to the Connor one just to see what they'd do with him. It looks like they set it at Stanford, which will also be interesting (I was there for a year getting my master's degree). If they make references to the CoHo (Coffeehouse) I will intone "Cooooohooooo" and snicker again. Stanfordian abbreviations can be very entertaining. ^_^

[identity profile] astridv.livejournal.com 2006-08-23 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I just read the Connor issue. Yeah, it's set at Stanford thought we don't get to see too much of the Campus.

I like it, though I have a few issues with it. The Connor likeness is of the vague variety, and the artwork is, hm, not bad really, but not really good either. It's just that in some panels the anatomy looks a bit screwed up. But the plot is pretty good, with the caveat that some lines of dialog sound a litte simplistic. Overall, this book scratches the itch. I'd rec it, regardless of its flaws.

Though I'm really hungering for a comic as brilliant as Fray. Joss' storytelling and Moline's artwork have completely spoiled me.

[identity profile] yhlee.livejournal.com 2006-08-24 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'll keep an eye out for it, then.

I too am spoiled by Fray. I mean, yes--one-shots don't have a lot of space, but I have seen powerful storyline compressed into collectible card game text. So it can be done!

Hey! Yeah, I've read (devoured) chapter 22 the moment it came out. I was busy colouring these babies here so I'm way behind my fb. I'll catch up on my email once I'm done with the lettering for the second page. This chapter is so fantastic that a simple "cool chappy, write more" seems somewhat inadequate.

Oh, I'm almost envying you. And you'll see, this is when it's about to get really good. Season one was so-so, in season two it's starting to come together. Three is one of my favourites seasons of Buffy. And of course after that there's AtS which is an even better show imho.

Angel, talk to the stick :)

Are you absolutely sure, that you don't want to draw 48++ pages epic? Come on it will be fun (for us), and all the cool kids do it.

[identity profile] astridv.livejournal.com 2006-08-23 12:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so very, very sure. One-pagers are the way to go!

Come on it will be fun (for us), and all the cool kids do it.

No one's doing comic. Well, few folks, anyway. Why aren't more people doing comic? Even if you can't draw, you could use screenshots and photoshop them over, that would look really cool if done well.

[identity profile] yhlee.livejournal.com 2006-08-23 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I still need to come up with a Bones one-pager idea to pitch to you. The only thing I've come up with is a lame RPG joke, and, well, did I mention lame?

I was doing a very intermittent gag strip for a while (which only required very basic drawing skills for characters to be recognizable) but I just haven't had any ideas for dumb jokes involving the Buffyverse lately. :-D I would love to see a Photoshop version, but finding the screenshots could get time-consuming. Sort of like a miniature version of vidding? (Where clipping OMG takes forever AAAGH.)

Yeah, like vidding only with stills. I couldn't do it myself. But vidders must have a good idea where to find which scene.

I really think it's doable. Though it'd probably take as long as drawing it from scratch.

I'd love to do a Bones one-pager, but so far inspiration hasn't struck. Though I had two Bones cartoon ideas in the past which just hit me all of a sudden, so maybe the muse will come by again.

[identity profile] yhlee.livejournal.com 2006-08-23 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
It really depends on the vidder (and of course familiarity with the source). I have a lousy visual memory, so unless it's from an episode/scene I've vidded before, I have to go rewatch. And from the sounds of it even experienced vidders often find themselves rewatching things to find that perfect clip. On the current vid project I found a wonderful clip from "Lie to Me" that I wouldn't have remembered, and wouldn't have thought to include until I saw it again.

Also, PhotoShop is a great mystery to me. It's very sad. I have my hands full with Final Cut Express.

This just keeps getting better. Love that shot of Fray in shadows next to the skyline, it's so slayer.

Obviosly, Angel doesn't know that the world is back down to one slayer. Does he get the slayer vibe off of her, he just recognized the axe or is it a combo deal?

Can't wait for more. You should send this to IDW (or Joss), it's as good or better than anything they've published.

Does he get the slayer vibe off of her, he just recognized the axe or is it a combo deal?

I'm thinking both. This close to a slayer, he must feel a little vibey thing. I'm not sure if he saw the scythe in that s7 Buffy ep... has been ages since I watched them, but I seem to remember she had it with her in that cave.

You should send this to IDW (or Joss), it's as good or better than anything they've published.

Oh, we couldn't send it to Joss 'cause he can't read fic. Or at least can't admit he reads fic. And we can't send it to IDW because it's too AU - we're establishing this post-NFA scenario... and I could see right away that lots of people are missing Spike. (What can I say, Yoon and I are both Angel fangirls ;).)

[identity profile] a2zmom.livejournal.com 2006-08-23 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Count me as Angel fangirl number 3. I like Spike, but Angel? He's my guy.

[identity profile] yhlee.livejournal.com 2006-08-24 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Although--once this gets done, if you had any interest whatsoever, I could consider writing up a non-AU script to pitch to you first. If you had any interest.

I'm not averse to writing Spike, but he didn't fit in this story. :-D
ext_2027: (Default)

[identity profile] astridv.livejournal.com 2006-08-24 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm definitely interested. Time is a limiting factor though, but it looks like I'm getting faster at this. Hey, it was just too months ago that we started this, and already five pages, not too bad.

I like Spike, but I don't think anything absolutely has to be about him. Even if that makes it somewhat less marketable. :P You tell the stories you wanna tell. Even IDW do the spotlights for all the characters, which is pretty neat, come to think of it. They do try to keep the fans happy.

[identity profile] yhlee.livejournal.com 2006-08-25 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Gives me time to think of a non-AU premise that doesn't tread on canon/other comicverse stuff. :-)

[identity profile] astridv.livejournal.com 2006-08-25 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
ah, I was meaning to answer... the silhouette (as well as the montage on the next page) were Yoon's idea; I was following the script to the letter there. (I love it too, it's a properly cool way to introduce the slayer.)
