Bones character sketches

I wanted to do some facial studies and picked the Bones crew as subjects. To, you know, combine the pleasant with the useless. :o)

Lots of Zack ones in here because that guy's not easy to draw. I would've thought you just draw a head of hair and be done but, no.
Brennan and Dr. Goodman are next, maybe a few more of Hodgins and Angela. And maybe those guys from Supernatural. This is so relaxing.

So, I've made good use of my vacation so far. I uploaded 10 new stories to the archive. Down to 64 or so. I got my graphic tablet to work (never again Bluetooth), and managed to do laundry, and went rollerblading, and, and... tomorrow I'll tackle that chaos that is our apartment, which is in an advanced state of entropy.
*
I have a query: My firefly DVD set is defect, I'm getting error messages for the final two eps. Can't see any scratches, but something's not right. We managed to watch most of 'Heart of Gold' except the end, but now I must get my hands on 'Objects in Space'. I can only find torrents for the complete series and I need just the last one or two eps. If anyone could point me to a place I can download I'd be grateful. Email's vohwink at muenster dot de. (I refuse to call it an illegal download 'cause I paid good money for the bleeding DVD.) [eta: problem solved; much thanks to [livejournal.com profile] litashields]

Thank you for posting these, they're awesome - that top centre one of Booth, and Zack with the skull, especially.

And it never occurred to me what a weird nose Zack has :)

Weird but cute. Like Zack ;)

These are lovely! And your Boreanaz images are especially evocative. Which makes me wonder again why none of the Angel comic books seem capable of giving us an Angel likeness that's actually, you know, a likeness. Except yours, of course. :)

[identity profile] astridv.livejournal.com 2006-03-14 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, thanks. I have no idea why the official artists can't get the Angel likeness right. Are you following the recent series? His Spike likeness is pretty much spot on. I find Spike much harder to draw than Angel, personally.
(Also, the artist gave Illyria quite a rack...)

If you don’t find the last episodes, can I send you my original DVD, if you do have a DVD burner, which I don’t have in my old computer, so I can’t myself make a copy of it.
ext_2027: (Default)

[identity profile] astridv.livejournal.com 2006-03-14 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the gracious offer. I'll probably get back to it if I can't dl. I'll pay you the postage, of course. I don't have a DVD burner yet, but as of next week my roommate will have one.

Ah, I got 'Objects in Space.' So, no need to go the snail mail route.

Wow. Faces and hands are the hardest things to draw, but you've completely captured the essence of all of them. Wonderful work.

Do you sketch every day? I know my sister does. She buys those long rolls of Japenese paper so she can do "warm ups" before she gets down to serious work.

[identity profile] astridv.livejournal.com 2006-03-14 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you sketch every day?

I used to sketch every day when I was in art school. Me and my friends would go to the zoo, or to a café to draw the people. I was always sketching when I had to wait somewhere, like at a bus stop. Nowadays I'm drawing or colouring a lot, but I don't really sketch much, unless I'm traveling.

Funny, just the other day I was thinking that I should start carrying a sketchpad with me again. I was scanning some older sketches, mostly stuff I've done traveling. Brings back a lot of memories. I'll probably post them to my journal, since they're already handily digitized.

She buys those long rolls of Japenese paper so she can do "warm ups" before she gets down to serious work.

I like the plain white printer paper. :) When I start a project I usually jump right in without warming up. Unless it's a topic I haven't done before... when I started on the polar bear book, I spent the first day just sketching bears. Your sister is an artist?

[identity profile] a2zmom.livejournal.com 2006-03-15 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
My sister is indeed a professional artist (not that she eans a living at it.). She's won several awards and last year got into a juried show - about 40 works were selected out of a field of 500.

here's a link to her work (http://alainebecker.com/index.htm). I'd love to know what you think.

I find her current work very raw and full of physical pain, which isn't surprising. She's been experiancing agonizing back pain for the last six months or so. The "victim series" is about our mom's battle with breat cancer.

[identity profile] astartexx.livejournal.com 2006-03-13 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, these are amazing, especially the Zach one with the skull, you totally captured his innocence and curiosity in that one and I really love the shadow play in it. The two Booth ones on top are also fantastic, love the moody expression in the middle and again the light on the right. So beautiful, I'm in awe.
ext_2027: (Default)

[identity profile] astridv.livejournal.com 2006-03-14 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! Heh... My intent was to capture the likeness with as few lines as possible, so from that standpoint the Zack one with the skull was a failure. But I still think it turned out interesting, just diffenrent than I intended. (You should see the amount of white-out on that one, though).

It's fun to draw these people.

With pleasure. That's the cool thing about fan art, the uh... sharability ;o).

These are wonderful! Makes you wonder how come comic book artists can't do half as well.

[identity profile] astridv.livejournal.com 2006-03-14 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
In their defense, sometimes the deadlines are a bitch. But still I wonder sometimes why they can't get better likenesses.

[identity profile] jwaneeta.livejournal.com 2006-03-14 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Thos are gorgeous. I really like the way you spot blacks without seeming to. It looks so fluid. Wish I could do that with a pen.

I think I owe you a reply to something, but I can't find it or even think rationally. *g* I'm in Hades, Hades, I tell ya. Time has lost all meaning and the sunlit memory of life and freedom is but a forgotten dream. Four more spreads and six more pages and I can rejoin the human race, though.

Hah. Don't tell me you can't do that with a pen. I've seen your work! Hey, when you're done with the stuff you're working on, is it possible to see a glimpse, or is it top seekrit?

I'm in Hades, Hades, I tell ya.

Yup, know the place. Joined the ranks of the undead last month. Feels good to be back on the other side.

Good luck and good spirits!

That is really awsome! I should so pull out my pencils and kohl again... Everytime I see your stuff I get so inspired :)

Do you mind if I friend you so I won't miss more of your beautiful work?

Glad you like, and you should definitely get those pencils out again (because, fun!)

Do you mind if I friend you so I won't miss more of your beautiful work?

Oh, sure. No need to ask, I got an open friending/unfriending going here. Though I'm not always posting a lot of fan art... I suppose there're stretches where not much interesting is going on here. ;)

These are just superb studies love. Just excelent work as usual.

These are so awesome. I'd love to be able to draw like that. But mostly so I could make characters do naughty things. *coughs* I especially like the DB one on top in the middle--so expressive. You're a genius.

*snicker*
I think my main drive when I started drawing was that I wanted to illustrate my daydreams. Scarily PG rated stuff, though, I guess I was a gen fan even as a hormonal teenager. Anyway, I filled my exercise books with drawings of indians and jedis and scenes from Star Trek (I had some very weird crossover scenarios going on in my head, complete with Mary Sue, obviously... I am *so* glad there was no internet back in the eighties.)

[identity profile] yhlee.livejournal.com 2006-03-19 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Awww! You are nifty.

Aside: I couldn't even get past the first five minutes of "Heart of Gold," but that was by preference, not by defective DVD. I hope you get your episodes!

Thank you.

re: Heart of Gold... I thought it was an okay episode, though it was hard to tell with the picture freezing every other minute.

[identity profile] terilyn4.livejournal.com 2006-03-19 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
wow Astrid, these are terrific. The only other art of yours I've seen was the Muppet Angel comic so interesting to see something new. :)

Hey, thanks. Yeah, I still need the eps, particularly the last one. I know nothing about AIM though - is it like Yahoo messenger? I've only chatted about half a dozen times. I don't know if I have AIM on my computer or if I have to install it first...

[identity profile] litashields.livejournal.com 2006-03-20 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
You don't really have to do anything, although a fast connection will make things a whole lot easier. IM me through AIM and I'll walk you through it. I don't have Yahoo!Messenger

Hey. Sorry for signing off so abruptly the other day... I was about to fall asleep at the wheel, so to speak. If you still got that thing you wanted me to look over, I'm curious.

[identity profile] sylverwolfe.livejournal.com 2006-03-21 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
beautifully rendered. you capture the actors' expressions and the characters' personalities so wonderfully well. i officially envy your art skills. :-D

[identity profile] astridv.livejournal.com 2006-03-21 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks, I'm happy you think I caught their personalities. That's the tricky part... sometimes you move a line just a tenth of a millimeter and suddenly it looks like a different person. Very weird.

[identity profile] krys33.livejournal.com 2006-03-21 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)

Thanks. By the way, I read your little ficlet on ffn the other day, 'Just Fine'. I liked it, it was short but cute with a good ending. Should've fed back then, but I don't really like to use ffn's comment system. (Weird, since I have no problem commenting on lj.)

Anyway, long story short, hope you'll write more :)

Where did you get your Firefly DVD set from?

Maybe you could try going to a store that has some in stock and see if they could exchange your set for a new one? Maybe say that you received it as a gift if you can't find your receipt? ;-)

I got it used on amazon. And I already gave the seller five stars, grr. Though he seemed really nice and honest, and it's possible that the last disk just doesn't run on my computer but worked on his. Anyway, some kind soul sent me the last ep, so it's all good. Come to think of it, I should edit that part of my post.

[identity profile] thedothatgirl.livejournal.com 2006-03-21 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Great work, I love Hodgins, and Zack with Skull particularly - came here via the 'two men in a mini' sketch (which was awesome!) posted to a Bones community

Are you ok if I friend you as I'd like to see more of your work.

Sure, no need to ask. I hope I won't be disappointing anyone who friends this, today was the last day of my vacation... normally there's not quite as much art spam *g*. But fan art is addictive, I found, so...

Your icon looks great, did you do that? What's the technique? I checked out your userinfo and found a link to your site, but I need a plugin that won't load. I'll try installing it later.

[identity profile] thedothatgirl.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yes the icon is from a Angel montage, though strictly amateur artiste here ;)

I use mainly watercolours with some pencil sketching, which I resumed after I got hooked on the whedon fandoms, fan art is addictive to do, as much as view.

I took a look at one of your earlier posts with the watercolours & Cathedral painting, and now am even more in awe. Truly beautiful work.
