fanart: A friendly sparring match

I've been meaning to draw a sparring scene for ages. It's funny, all the while I was sketching and coloring this I thought it wasn't going anywhere, wondering whether I should scrap it and try a different angle. Then I threw a bit more color at it and, huh. Suddenly it worked.

I had Clint sketched with a shirt on at first. Then I said to myself: Self, what are you doing? So I took it off. In the interest of studying anatomy. For Science!



*me, showing sketch to roomie*: Does this look like a friendly sparring match?
Roommate: I'm not getting that at all.
Me: Between two deadly assassins?
Roommate: Then yes.

Yeah, usually I see a scene in front of my inner eye and I just put that to paper and muse afterwards what is going on there, if that. ;)

When I'm lacking a specific idea but want to draw something, I'll sometimes just start scribbling lines until a picture starts to form in a more subconscious process.

This is really energetic. I love the action snapshot and pose. The foot looks a bit odd, but then feet always do, so it's probably just because normally I don't see feet from that perspective (being lucky enough not to be kicked in the face on a regular basis, or at all really).

Heh. Well, I used to do a lot of martial arts so I saw naked feet from all angles. But I might have a tendency to draw the toes too stubby because that's what my own foot looks like. I often use my own body with a mirror as a quick reference.

I use mirrors too, though I couldn't get anywhere with that kind of action pose. Now I'm imagining you doing contortionist poses while hopping on one leg to get the other foot and leg mirrored in this kind of position...

(My toes are about as long as the first two segments of my corresponding fingers, except for the little one, so a bit more than half of a finger. Long enough to grasp and hold things with them.)

Interesting.I just checked: mine are only about as long as the first segment of the corresponding finger, with the exception of the big toe which is biger.
