fic recs [SGA]

I'm still not done with reading through all the sga_santa entries, but here are my favorite stories so far:
Five Stories Jeannie Miller Tells by [livejournal.com profile] argosy
McKay/Sheppard; PG-13; ~4,300 words
Summary: She hopes they will tell all the stories of Atlantis.

A lovely, bittersweet story, beautifully written and structured.

The True Story of When They Went A-Wandering by [livejournal.com profile] auburnnothenna
gen; Rating: R; humor; Spoilers; through 5x13 Inquisition; ~16,290 words
Summary: It's just like a mission, only not.

Funniest fic I've read in a while; I had a great time reading it. This is the tale of our intrepid team following the honored Pegasus tradition of The Wandering (in order to improve their image in the galaxy). Naturally they handle that task with great grace and dignity... um.

I had this one printed out and was reading it in public. And I was giggling my way though this story. People were looking. ;)

last ep of SGA tonight... I think I'm kind of in denial. :( I don't want the show to end. I don't really want to watch it tonight but rather save it, but it's either watch it now or avoid the internet until I have. Meep. [eta: okay, still not done with work so I'll probably watch it tomorrow... don't tell me about it.]

I really shouldn't post at all right now because I still haven't finished today's work. Okay, just a few pics I've taken today...

Frozen Lake Aa

Lake Aa, a little later

this is from last month, I think.

It doesn't show on the pictures, but the ice on the lake is total crap. It had snowed on it the one day, then the next day the snow melted into a slush, and that's when the temperature really dropped. So now the ice is covered by a layer of rocky frozen slush and it's totally ruined for skating. It's so frustrating, finally we get a winter cold enough that the ice on the lake actually carries, and for longer than a day too, and we can't skate. Though tomorrow we plan to try anyway. And I rode my bike across the lake, which was pretty cool.

We have a cricket in the kitchen. Now our apartment sounds like a western movie. I actually like the sound.

Interesting, we have not had it here so cold here, for many years now, that lakes get so frozen that you can stand on them.

Nice photos

Not even this winter? I always thought Denmark was a tad colder than Germany, since it's further up north.

Denmark is surrounded by water though, and maritime climates are milder and more moderate than further inland.

Of course, good point.

Aww, I just watched it. Waah, show, don't go! I liked it a lot, very tense, and for some reason I was convinced something awful was gonna happen so I was really on the edge of my seat for the whole second half. I thought they were gonna kill Sheppard. Then I was convinced Ronon was actually dead. For a minute there I even thought they'd destroy the city.

Of course they had to have their moment of stupid and enter the hive with only four people, wtf?

I didn't even get to the ep reviews on my friends list yet because I stumbled about argosy's post about that awful pile-o-bile by tarlanx. yecchhh. But you know what, I actually prefer it when the Keller haters come out like that, with unveiled misogynism. Those comments pretty much speak for themselves. Plus, that post makes a handy file of 'fen I shall henceforth try to avoid like the plague'.

[identity profile] carolyn-claire.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
*holds you* I thought it was a great send-off for the show. So many possibilities, now! And so easy to write "team on Earth" stories. :) Anything we write that follows this ep is going to get Jossed, though, you know it is. It's AU time!

I was convinced something awful was gonna happen

Me, too! I kept watching everyone for signs of impending death! And then I was sure it was Ronon! But we got to keep everybody, yay! It was a roller-coaster. Just like John likes it.

Of course they had to have their moment of stupid and enter the hive with only four people, wtf?

But, you know, they hung a lantern on it, so it's okay. *snickers*

I stumbled about argosy's post about that awful pile-o-bile by tarlanx.

Yeah, I wasted some time over there, myself. Wow. And, yeah, it's kind of a handy guide for who to look askance at, I guess. Who to think twice about, anyway. *shakes head*

I haven't posted about it (or Vegas) yet, and I'm thinking maybe tomorrow. I'm going to try to get past my sad, watch them again, think about them without sniffling. *sniffle* So much to talk about, so few tissues. I'm on to blowing my nose in toilet paper, now. *g*

Yeah, I wasted some time over there, myself. Wow.

Yeah, I saw. I got into it the last round so maybe I'm sitting this one out.

Dude, that comment from kensieg to you nearly caused my eyes to roll back into my forehead and get stuck there. When someone says something hideously stupid and offensive, it's only a matter of hours until freedom of speech gets trumpeted to shut everybody up. It's like a cousin of Goodwin's law.

In the past there was a Kill Weir community.

They never get that that's part of the problem. Oh fandom, how can you be be so awesome and so messed up at the same time.

I saved at least a dozen ep reactions for leisurely reading today. I had to go back like 80 posts on my friends list yesterday...

Wahh. Shoooww. I'm just glad we'll still have the movie. And I'm glad they went out on a high note.

[identity profile] carolyn-claire.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you're smart to sit it out. I should have, but I never learn.

it's only a matter of hours until freedom of speech gets trumpeted to shut everybody up.

I was going to bait her, come back with the "are you trying to censor ME?" thing, but sheesh. A battle of wits with an unarmed opponent is no fun. *g*

They never get that that's part of the problem.

Someone brought up the same point in eleveninches' journal. And accused her of having no sense of humor. *facepalm* How do they think pointing out other instances of ugly hatred of female characters is helping?

I had to go back like 80 posts on my friends list yesterday...

I had to hurridly backtrack on a few that I read--I'm SO not in the mood for any "let me tell you how much it sucked" reviews, and they're out there. *sigh* I really, really hope all the haters are going to go away, now that they don't have a weekly show to snark about. Please let them not yack about the movies. I might go all huge and green and smashy. *g*

Dude if I actually watched SGA, I would totally read those. *nods firmly*

*hugs you tight*
I'm so sorry about your show bb. Lord knows I'll be a complete mess when SPN finally ends. Er oops. Perhaps I'll just let you continue on in your denial, yeah?

PRETTY PICCYTUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURES!!!!!!

Hey, if you ever want recs for SGA stuff to get a taste, you know where to ask. *g* SGA fandom has *amazing* fanworks.

Btw, I was dl'ing that time loop SPN ep from bittorrent to feed my time-loop kink, but when it was at about 80 percent I was getting a virus warning. Possibly unrelated, but I kind of freaked out and haven't restarted the download yet. Are there any safer options to download eps by any chance? (if you know of any you're allowed to share, my email's username at livejournal.com)

[identity profile] crimsonkitty88.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Ditto for SPN. I'm constantly amazed at all the talent in fandom

Sent you a link. ^_^

Very pretty!

Sadly the ice on the central Alster lake here doesn't carry yet. The ice is just bad enough to hinder shipping in the harbor and on the Elbe which is the main ice-related topic here. Of course they are using icebreakers (now switched to an around the clock work schedule for the harbor itself to keep it open), but I think they had to stop shipping inland on the Elbe from here since Thursday.

[identity profile] astridv.livejournal.com 2009-01-10 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
You're in Hamburg? They're still using icebreakers on Dortmund-Ems-Kanal here, but they say they'll have to close it in a few days if this keeps on.

Ha, I just went skating on the lake and it was a hoot. Whew! Bit bumpy but great fun.

[personal profile] ratcreature 2009-01-10 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm in Hamburg. I remember when I was a kid the Alster was frozen enough to walk across once or twice, but you need at least 20cm ice for it to be declared safe, and that isn't going to happen unless it stays below zero for another two weeks or so. Currently I think the Alsterdampfer are even still going across for public transport, despite the ice, so it's not fully frozen at all.
