fic and vid recs [SGA]

Written By The Victors by [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza
The fic that's eating fandom - the story of Atlantis' secession from Earth, told partly in the form of excerpts from historical texts as well as traditional narrative. Incredibly satisfying and complex, just go read! (if you haven't already; you probably have but I can't not mention it :) 55,000 words

Constructed reality, absolutely convincing. I've watched it repeatedly already; it's so cool to watch the story come to life in pictures.

Two more SGA vids I just discovered and loved:
I am/Lamb by [livejournal.com profile] lim
music: The Mercy Seat by Johnny Cash
A visually stunning look into the mind of John Sheppard. I know zilch about vidding technique but I thought it has a great use of special effects - they're very effective in creating a particular mood without being obtrusive.

Pairing: McKay/Sheppard; Rating: PG; Spoilers: none (footage from seasons one and two only)
Fascinating vid. Unusual in that it uses stock material not just from the show but from other sources as well, with great results.

meta/recs The SGA Project, a.k.a., "Flavor Of The Year." by [livejournal.com profile] icarusancalion
The goal: Give readers a taste of 2006 Stargate fandom, provide a rec-list with context, a description of intertexts, and explanation. (slanted toward Sheppard/McKay)
Not just a great recs list and a way for the fandom newbie to get up to speed, but an interesting view at the creative interaction in Stargate fandom, not just with the canon text but with other fannish works. Very cool.

Stopping here, must go and sketch fanart...

Hm. I had planned to put a boat in the foreground but I just got an idea for a different use for this so I left out the boat for now. Maybe it'll pan out.

Woah. Water! How gorgeous!

You know what I like most about it? The seagulls. The show only ever has this shot as computer animation, and it only just occurred to me how much difference living creatures make.

Yeah, animals are great to add atmosphere. I also like to use them for transitions between scenes, stuff like that. In my mind I have an idea for a, whatsitcalled, Kamerafahrt, following the flight of a bird and ending in Atlantis. Could be a neat opener for a comic. Not new, but neat. ;)

I actually love the computer animation on the show, and the whole design of Atlantis, it's gorgeous. But in season 1 they really could've sprung for another establishing shot - I think they had just the one, which they used over and over...

btw, the scene above is now colored and embedded in a larger artwork, here (http://astridv.livejournal.com/94953.html)

Yes, true. I was cheering and clapping my hands in late season 2 (or was it season 3?), when I first saw that gorgeous night shot they added. Good computer graphics make me happy. :D
