Vid recs - Buffyverse

While I purposefully not read the spoiler-brimming friends list... here's a post I wanted to do for a while. I wish I'd written it before The Hardrive Crash... my backup copy of the 'fave vids' folder wasn't up to date, and I don't remember everything that was in there. But at least I had most of them saved. Also, looking up the links I found that some of these don't seem to be available online at the moment; I'll list them all anyway.

I know nothing about the technical side of vidding, nor the jargon, so I don't really have anything clever to say... say, why exactly at one particular moment a shiver runs down my spine each time. My approach to vids is the same as to music - completely unanalytical. Anyway... these are some vids I watch over and over:

Angel Trailer by Robert Flannigan, music by Robert Duncan, from 'Chosen'
A trailer for Not Fade Away. WB? This is how it's done! I saw this one just last week, and it went right on my faves list... watched it three times in a row first thing. The more I watch it, the more I can appreciate how well-structured it is. It embodies the spirit of the show, not just the finale. This would make a great recruiter vid, if it didn't happen to spoil the ending. ;)
(I was having trouble viewing the vid on the large screen on youtube, and Robert was so kind to send me a link to a zip-file. I don't want to post that link here, but his email is in the credits.)

Closer by [livejournal.com profile] sisabet, Song: Nine Inch Nails.
Still the Angel/Spike vid.

Black Suits Comin' by imation
"The Fang Gang as the MIB"

Jesus Walks by [livejournal.com profile] mimesere, song by Kanye West
"The only thing I pray is that my feet don't fail me now." Fantastic Gunn Vid.

I Love LA by [livejournal.com profile] sockkpuppett and Kamil. Song by Randy Newman.
(Looks like this one is offline right now.)

Whatever by [livejournal.com profile] sisabet and [livejournal.com profile] sockkpuppett
We don't call it 'my dead gay show' for nothing.

Without Me by [livejournal.com profile] sisabet and Dr. Dawn, Song by Eminem
"Lilah won. Of course, in order to do it she had to die and come back and spend eternity in hell, but that just goes to show that a little determination will end in a mind wipe."

Shades of Grey by [livejournal.com profile] astartexx, Song by Billy Joel
Ever since I saw this vid, I can't not think of Wesley when I hear that song... it is so obviously all about him.

Yodel by Wendy
Even though the picture quality in this one is pretty poor, it is still one of my favourites because of its sheer hilarity and pitch-perfect timing. A Buffy vid set to the Goatherd's Song from The Sound of Music.

Hell by [livejournal.com profile] mrmonkeybottoms, Song by: Squirrel Nut Zippers
"Wow. Being a Slayer can sure suck ass. What's a girl and her Scoobies to do? Why, dance of course. Dance and dance and dance."

Mandy by Xandra
"Ever wonder who Angel's thinking about when he hears/sings Mandy?"
Unfortunately I can't find a working link for this one, I've looked all over the web. What is more, I lost my only copy in The Harddrive Crash. Wah. damn damn damn.
[eta: temporary link]

Moonlight Serenade
Another one of my lost vids. It's Angel/Spike, in the style of an old silent movie. It is hilarious. But unfortunately I don't remember where I found it. Anyone know who made this one?

Counting Bodies by Milly, song by A Perfect Circle
"A dark Angel/Connor/Darla study (mostly Angel/Connor). Warning for coarse language."

Fighting It by [livejournal.com profile] yhlee, song by Ben Folds
"Angel(us) and Connor: parenting meets Murphy's law."

Flight Plan by Wicked Amp, song: System of a Down - Chop Suey
"Before I started making this video, I never realized how many times people get thrown around in this series. Included in this vid is only a fraction of that amount but I hope it plays well. "
No other show makes people getting thrown around look so good.

Two Words by [livejournal.com profile] sisabet, Song: Kanye West featuring Mos Def, Freeway, and the Harlem Boys Choir
"MY SHOW.
Five years."
'nuff said.

Heh. I used to be really nervous about analyzing vids, but I realized that I did have some rudimentary experience analyzing music despite dropping out of the IBH Music track in high school (...creative differences with the teacher...), and after a while I started being able to parse the visual stuff, which is much harder for me. Also, making vids does help me understand the semantics of Vid, a little. :-) But vidders do like hearing the "yay! I liked it!" whether or not you're using "proper" vocabulary, whatever that means. A lot of vidders aren't very technical-vocabulary-minded, themselves. (I admit I go into sporky rages when I hear certain musical terminology misused. I don't mind handwavy description; not everyone has a formal musical background, but just about everyone relates to music. Just don't...use a term wrong, is all. :-D)

You have a fair number of vids I like on the list. =^) (And some that I never saw. Alas.)

And I'm glad you liked "Fighting It." It was a pain and a half to make, but it was worth it. :-)

I added in the link to "Shades of Grey". It's a older one but I really heart it.

Which of these do you like, out of curiosity?

And I'm glad you liked "Fighting It." It was a pain and a half to make, but it was worth it. :-)

I particularly love that ultra fast cut at "everything changes". Wow. The song itself would normally not be up my alley since I prefer fast music. But it fits really well.

I started to look into the whole bunch of vids I downloaded more recently, among them your David. Heh. I've watched it just once... it looks *cool*. I have to watch it a couple more times now, to hunt for the meaning. I vaguely recall you saying something about it but I just skimmed because I didn't want to spoil myself.

Veering off topic... this was on Hanzi Smatter today. I thought you might get a kick out of this: Gibberish Asian Font Mystery Solved (http://www.hanzismatter.com/2006/08/gibberish-asian-font-mystery-solved.html). *headdesk*

Let's see: "Closer" is brilliant, although I haven't rewatched it because Spike/Angel is not of further interest to me; I adore "Black Suits Comin'" (although I wish some of the aspect ratio problems had been resolved); "Jesus Walks" is quite good and makes me happy for Gunn, as well; "Whatever" is hysterical; "Without Me" is sassy and scary all at once; "Flight Plan" is gorgeous; and "Two Words" is possibly my favorite vid of all time.

I need to view the rest on your list. :-)

I prefer fast music as well; that was a charity!vid so the song was chosen by [livejournal.com profile] mumblemutter. Normally with slow music? I sit there thinking, Can I cut to the next clip now? Please? Pleasepleaseplease? Patience is not one of my virtues. :-D

And don't worry too much about "David"--I had a lot of fun with it, but reactions to it have been mixed and it is a deeply flawed vid. I keep it around for puppet value. =^)

Always fascinated by other peoples recs - So many of these are listed on my recs page - it's great to see I Love LA - listed too, it still gives me the warm fuzzies when I watch it again- one of the vids that got me started into the vidding thang.

I just had to comment too it's good Robert has his Angel Trailer on YouTube now as the link to his site has been kaput some time now. Thank goodness I kept that one on my hardrive.

Same here. I'll check out your recs page; always looking for new vids. Good day for vid recs: someone in the comments of [livejournal.com profile] tkp's latest post just rec'd one which is beyond awesome: Failed Experiments in Video Editing (http://www.jazzmess.com/down/BBT_failedexperiments.html). Must not forget to fb the vidder about the awesomeness of this vid.

I Love LA is one I watch over and over. It'll always put a smile on my face. Same with Black Suits Comin'.

Actually I think Robert wasn't the one who put it up on YouTube. But he sounded pleased rather than flustered that someone did. Me, I'm really happy that I was able to download the file to my harddrive. *clings and never lets go*

Oh, I thought Robert had put it on there. Never mind - it's too good not to be seen.

I'll check out the failed Experiments one too.

A wonderful rec list! A few here that I haven't heard of, so I'll be busy downloading later.

Here's a couple of my absolute fav's that you've probably heard of, but I'll mention them anyway.

<b>Bullet with Butterfly wings</b> A Spike character vid. Once again beautifully edited and just a joy to watch.

*ETA* Just to add that [livejournal.com profile] zeronephilim has informed me that for the time being at least he is hosting most of his videos on youtube here..

Sory about the above garbled post. I don't know what's up with my browser today!

Huh, the way that comment was garbled is weird. Doesn't matter though, as long as the links are readable :)

I'm still on season 2 of Buffy, but I went ahead and picked up S3 so I can carry on uninterrupted when the spirit moves me.

I guess I'd better wait a while before viewing any of these.

Just wanted you to know that ch23 and ch24 are up.

I have Servare Vitas on story alert, of course. :) I'm so engrossed by now, when I get the new chapter I close the door to my room so I can read it uninterrupted.
... I shall go over to ffn to comment in more detail, instead of here.

Actually, I just realized I can rather comment at your LJ. (I loathe ffn's clunky comment feature; it's like its sole purpose is to stifle discussion.)

I know this is a bit old, but thank you so much for reccing Counting Bodies! I recently remastered the vid (it's a bit different, but mostly shinier), which can be found in my lj, if you're interested!
