via [livejournal.com profile] selenak: So, apparently JKR was doing a Harry Potter reading the other day, and Salman Rushdie, who happened to be there, mentioned his theory on Snape. And she confirmed it. Spoilers, I guess.

I knew it! I knew that Snape's [spoiler], and that Dumbledore's [spoiler]. The fact that it's Salman Rushdie who brought it up adds a nice, surreal quality.

I always thought it was obvious from the way that scene was written - the whole book as a matter of fact - that Snape was acting on Dumbledore's order, and against his will. To keep Draco from being the one to kill DD and thus falling to the dark side, one assumes. It looks like Dumbledore knew things others didn't, which gave him reason to trust Snape.

As if Dumbledore would beg Snape for his life. That's the guy who said, "After all, to the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure." (I read Potterquotes yesterday ;)

Hee! All to the (spoilery) good. I read another account of the appearance that took a less sanguine view of JKR's remarks, but I like this one. :)

I think it fits nicely into that scenario we talked about. I like it. And I really think any outcome where Snape turns out totally evil would contradict the carefully established characterization we've seen so far.

Yeah, much better than the ????????????? I used to get. Now if I can only figure out how to get the tv to work, then I finally will have a running, stable system. I think they screwed up at the shop when they installed the Graphics card. Maybe they can fix it per remote connection so I don't have to bring my computer over yet again.

Salman Rushdie? (boggles at the surreality of it all)

Seriously, if Mr. Rushdie hadn't been correct in his opinion, I would consider the whole series as an object lesson in How Not To Foreshadow.

Exactly. And Rowling's got foreshadowing down to a tee. Structure, too. When I re-read the series I was amazed how many seemingly unimportant details from the earlier books would later pop up again to become plot points.

Salman Rushdie as a fanboy... yeah, surreal :oD But hey, why not. The books have substance, on top of being highly entertaining.
