I'm having another longer recs post in the works, but it's going to take a while to type it all up, and I'm waiting for a few WIPs to be completed (because so many readers avoid those). In the meantime, here's a quick rec:

Brennan meets House... just lean back and watch the snark unfold. I haven't ever seen 'House', mind, but I think I love that guy. I also like how there's a case going on in the background.
---Yesterday, after finishing work around one am, I started inking page 3 of the comic. I had to force myself to go to bed around half past three, but it's mostly done. I hope I'll complete it today, colour and all. Maybe I can even get page 4 inked on the weekend.
---Got a copy of one of my books, which is just about to come out. I normally don't pimp my stuff here... wrong target group, wrong language. But this is cute and I'm quite proud of it, so...

It's a colouring book with lots of additional goodies, like stickers, and puzzles. It's a pretty cool concept, and it was fun to draw, too. (I didn't write this, just did the illus.)

---And hey, speaking of wrong language... here're a few lines, taken from issue #3 of the Spike vs Dracula comic: Anschlag! Stoppen Sie den Betrieb! Sie konnen nicht entgehen! or, even more bizarre, Anschlag oder ich schiebe! Huh?

My friends and I were mostly mystified by "Anschlag". I suspect they fed the Germans' lines into Babelfish (because how hard is it to find a native speaker), but why the heck would the computer return "Anschlag" when you enter "Halt" or "Stop"? They're the frikkin same words.

I'm enjoying the Spike vs Dracula series, but this third issue is much weaker than the first two, imho. And not because of the creative usage of German - I though the plot was rather weak and what's up with the inkwork in the first half? Issues #1 and #2 are pretty good though... fun, well characterized, good plot and artwork.

I've got #3, but haven't read it yet. My German is so rusty, it's eroded, but I thought "Anschlag", and "Halt" meant the same thing -- stop. I went to a German school, and those nuns? were always yelling at me to stop, but in so. very. many. ways!

You went to a German school? Were all your classes in German, then? I'm surprised how many of the folks on my flist speak German.

And a lot of people had nuns yell at them at school, apparently. I went to a catholic school, too, but the only thing that distinguished ours from state schools was that ours had more money to spend. That, and I had a free period during religion class because I was protestant.

As to Anschlag... weird. The only time it carries the meaning of 'stop' is when you have a machine or something, and pull or push it until it arrests. As in, 'bis zum Anschlag'. But it's never used as 'halt'. We just say 'Halt' or 'Stop'. Heh.

There're many more weird sentences in that comic. I was glad when for that submarine ep on AtS they found a good translator, and actors who could fake a reasonable German accent. Those things otherwise pull me right out of a story.

I'm guessing from this and the next post that you were watching BtVS in German...I tried when I was living there, but it was so unfunny because the Jossspeak was untranslatable, and I couldn't deal. I did, however, learn German largely from watching Voyager (perfect for learning a language because they'd talk about what they were going to do, then do it, then talk about what they just did. And it wasn't like the action was going so fast it was hard to follow :) And from X-Files...but the VO actress made Scully both oddly sexy and oddly robotic since her voice was so deep and monotonal and so much of GA's performance was in her intonation, while her face remained relatively still. But I never could get over them Sie-ing each other, even in the most intimate moments. Also, the endless "ist alles in ordnung?" Every German I knew always said "Bist du okay?" (Although I concede that they also said "Ich habe es abgef*cked", so not exactly following the Duden :)

Anyway, I'll alert my kid to your book - she's not 5-7, but she is both pferde-verruckt and German. And I love the Angel/Fray comics. Mind if I flist so I can follow along?

Oh, no no no. I tried to, but as you say, the dubbing ruins Joss' wit and humour. Unwatchable. Thanks for the internet, DVDs, and satellite, is all I'm saying... haven't watched German tv in years. And yeah, the 'Sie' constantly used even between close friends - shudder.

Sure, no need to ask. Actually I'll friend right back; I see that you're the one who does them crazy ST TOS recaps that Yoon linked to the other day. Ah, the nostalgia. TOS was my very first fandom. (Though I avoid watching it these days, because seeing them walk through the paper maché scenery screws with my fond childhood memories.)

I have very fond memories of it as a child, being one of the few things my father and I connected over. But I have to admit, my reading of it is very much queered at this point. Probably too much time spent in fandom -- even though I'm not a slasher, the slash aspects just seem to jump out of the screen and hit me over the head.

And wow, I didn't know Yoon had linked me. I'll have to thank her. Anyway I hope reading them doesn't mess with your childhood memories :)

Actually, if she's older, this one (http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/3401452363/028-2402054-9257308?v=glance&n=299956) would probably be more up her alley. (Just came out, too.) It's got a story part and a part with facts about horses, with illustrations by me as well as photos by someone else, and it all meshes really well, I'm pleasantly surprised. I'd say it's for age 10, give or take.
