Okay, okay, everyone is creating journals at GJ, and I have no idea what it's about because I've been way too enthralled by the wank that shook HP fandom... but anyway, I caved and created a place holder journal. I don't intend to post on it, but should fandom decide to flock over there, I'll have my username secured (I googled astridv... it's more common than you'd think). But, I like LJ. And I hate moving.
So, what've you been up to these past days? Over on journalfen, reading The Msscribe Story, as I have? If you haven't, I recommend it: it's the story of a sociopathic sockpuppet master who mangaged to manipulate large parts of the HP fandom for years. The sheer length of the report (about 90,000 words) is daunting at first glance, but I wasn't bored for one second.
The account is well-researched, fully referenced, and completely riveting. Whoever the author is, they know how to write well. It gives great insight into the inner workings of HP fandom (and to a lesser degree, fandom in general). Fun side fact: a good part of the wanks we saw pop up on f_w over the years appear to trace back to that one person. Everything makes a lot more sense in hindsight.
I'd say what I found most boggling about the whole msscribe wank - apart from the sheer criminal energy put into animating a sockpuppet army - is that an in-group of BNFs thought that they could 'rule' fandom... and that people would let them. Like
rahirah said... this whole mess does give some insight into where the BNF hatred in some corners is coming from. Uh, yeah. I couldn't before, but I can see it now.
It makes me fully appreciate the anarchy thing we've got going in Buffy fandom. One person's BNF is the next person's WTF... I like it that way. :)

And why is everyone flocking there? :(

And I have to say, the whole Charitygate thing at F_W was sickening. It was ghastly to think that so many evil people could crawl out of the woodwork to slag off a dying woman. Finding out it was the energetic malice of one sockpuppeting freak, rather than a blizzard of ugliness from a crowd, is somehow reasurring.
I never dreamed they'd figure out who was saying what in that mess. Damn, this is so deeply satisfying on so many levels.

I can't believe how many hours I've spent reading this. And it's still going strong! There's a new
twistconspiracy theorytwist here (http://www.journalfen.net/community/bad_penny/6141.html?thread=1752317#t1752317).I'll write more later. I'm at my dad's computer and this keyboard is weird to write with.

Oh, how yummy. :D It'll be a while before I've had my fill of this.

Looks like some of the BNFs' behaviour is coming round and biting them in the behind. I heard a lot about heidi8 before, and her penchant for playing the lawyer card and calling libel when someone posted something she didn't agree with. Not something that endears one to the crowds.
(That saying comes to mind: You meet the same people on the way down that you met on the way up.)
You got theories on who the author behind charlottelennox is? My first impression was angua9. The whole thing just sounds like it's written from her point of view. Though someone raised the interesting question of what happened to angua's partner-in-crime, who's barely mentioned. In any case, with so many internetz lawyers running wild, I can understand the desire to remain cloaked.

I could try to get another month's extension, but I think 'I don't feel like doing it' is not a good enough reason.

What a bore. Why can't they leave stuff alone?

Buffy fandom is my first and only fandom, and I have meet over the internet, interesting and intelligent people. But also a small loud minority, whom seem to try full fill every negative stereo type of a fan, but then again thankfully an minority.
