For those who're on BBF: we currently voting on including Firefly recs. Make sure to throw your 2 cents into the ticky box... or something.

My copy of "Buried Deep" arrived. So far not bad; not great either but the plot is interesting, particularly the forensic detail which is generously thrown in. I've seen better characterization in fic, but I've also seen worse. * Just, note for the writer: Seeley Booth? Does not have steel-blue eyes. Yes, it does too matter. Fans care about minor details like that. And how hard is it to take a look at the guy's eyes and double-check. Steel-blue eyes... in a way, that's worse than chocolate-colored orbs.
*[eta... after the first third the book gets much better; the chemistry is there and the narration flows quite nicely.]
[eta2... finshed. I give it three stars out of five.]
(Btw, I stand corrected: Reichs didn't co-author this book, even though amazon lists her as co-author.)

That's of course the big problem with those official tie-ins. Unless the writer is a fan of the show, yeah, I think many of them care more about the plot than the characters. (Hey, I've committed tie-in myself once, many many years ago, of a show I found boring. And boy, it was bad.)
While with a lot of fic, it's the other way round, strong characterization but often at the price of a weaker plot or sloppy grammar. It was a nice change to read a story where the author had a firm grip on POV and grammar. Still, the style was rather bland. Did you notice that every single character, upon first appearance, got a proper description... size, hair color, clothes, check, on with the story. Like following a template.
Anyway, I always try to cut tie-in writers a little slack, because it can't be easy to churn out something creative writing within the confines of deadlines and writer's guidelines. And like you said, the plot was decent. Didn't offer any big surprises, but I don't think it was supposed to (the first scene gave it pretty much all away).
