This morning I was riding my bike, unaware that the road was still covered by a treacherous icy glaze. So I slipped and landed on my side - which wasn't so bad. Then my bike landed on top of me - which wasn't so good. I just scraped my knee, though; it's a ridiculously tiny scrape, but it hurts like a bitch, so I skipped the gym today. But I want to go running again tomorrow. Shoulder hurts too, but I don't need that for running. And at least it's the left one, always preferable.

There's some mildly entertaining wank or other going on, about the Spuffy shippers being responsible for the season six storyline and the evils of television in general. Check [livejournal.com profile] rahirah's journal for the shocking details.

(Why is no one ever blaming the C/A shippers for season three of Angel? Are we not important? Do we not matter?)

By the way, am I the only one who loved the Spike/Buffy storyline in season six? It seems to be equally disliked by all factions, from reading the comment threads. I mean, I'm not a shipper in that I very rarely read S/B fic, but I thought that storyline was great; dark, and convincing, and sexy. It's what pulled me into BtVS while I'd previously only been interested in AtS.

In fanfic: [livejournal.com profile] hannasus wrote a sequel to her story 'Curses'. AtS gen. Post-NFA With Angel in a main role. *purrs*

I liked s.6 just fine.

I am a bit mystified by the widespread loathing of the season in a fandom that seem very into angst and h/c in fic.

It mystifies me in the same way as the widespread drooling over JM's unclad body is paired with the anger towards Marti Noxon for putting JM through having to undress.

I'm chalking it all up to me being unable to keep people and their varied opinions straight.

Interesting point. That's indeed weird. Personally I loved the season for its darkness, but tend to look for fic that's not overly angsty.

I'm not getting that, either. Maybe I'm missing something, but the Noxon hate mystifies me. I thought she did a pretty good job.

Hm... you mean, maybe fandom is not inherently schizophrenic, but rather a bunch of people all arguing at once? ;) Now that I can see.

Nope, I like it, too. (Actually, I find Spike/Buffy more interesting on tv than in fanfic which tends - imo, as always - to simplify their relationship.) I love season six in general.

Same here - even though I loved how S/B played out onscreen, I was never compelled to hunt for fic. I read a lot of it during s6 because there was just a whole lot of it recd, but I overdosed pretty soon. So nowadays, not so much with the Spuffy.

With exceptions, of course... for example I'm totally in love with Barb's "Raising in the Sun"-verse. But that's not really shipper fic; it's like the show that way.

I delighted in S6, and can't really get my head around why it's so universally loathed. I guess I'm just mental -- I even liked most of S7. It takes all kinds to make a world.

Hey, me too! :D I'd drifted away from BtVS, but S6 got me back into it.

Oooh, thanks for the steer! I've been falling behind on the Wank watching, what with having a house guest and all. Mmm, shipwank. It's my favorite flavor.

Sorry to hear about your wipeout. I think you should buy some absurdly expensive bath salts and soak for hours: that'll fix ya.

PS:

(form the OP:)

Season six of Buffy was my senior year of high school, which is to say 2002

Bwahahahaha! And that's all she wrote.

That's a good plan. For tomorrow... right now I'm still in the process of growing some new skin on my knee. How's your toe doing, anyway? Did you see a doctor? (Are we a bunch of old women or what ;)

I delighted in S6, and can't really get my head around why it's so universally loathed.

Maybe the fans who loathe it are just that much more vocal than the rest? Though it sure doesn't seem very popular. I don't get it either, I thought that was a whole season of very compelling writing. *shrugs* different strokes.

Season 7, I'm not so crazy about... I just saw so much wasted potential, particularly in the second half. They wasted whole episodes where not much new happened, while they could've wrapped up some of their subplots. I think they juggled too many balls and dropped quite a few, and they lost steam in the end. But even so, I still liked a lot of it. Still better than most everything else on the telly, anyway. Just the season as a whole, I found disappointing.

Huh. Who are these people that allegedly hate it? Season 6 always seemed to be widely loved in my experience.

Mystifyingly so for me, because while I didn't *hate* it by any means, I wasn't drawn into it, either. Too depressing for my own personal mood at the time, and the Willow stuff was poorly executed by the writers, IMO. Not to mention that the Trio left me cold.

At the same time, I was getting very drawn into Season 3 of AtS, so I just started drifting away from BtVS. I watched it enough to do my website analyses, but I was an AtS gal by that point.

Really? That's the first time I heard that. Probably alos depends on which corners of the fanfom one hangs out in.

Anyway, I suspect that the people who dislike something are always more vocal about it, so I guess it's not as hated as one sometimes comes to believe. What surprised me in this current kerfuffle, was that not just the anti-Spuffy faction hates the storyline, but also the shippers. The comments in Barb's post are almost unanimous in that regard. Very weird.

And yeah, season six was all about the depression. For some reason, that really appealed to me. Which is strange, come to think of it, since I like to read lighter fanfic or comedy. I'm not that much of an Angst fan at all.

At the same time, I was getting very drawn into Season 3 of AtS, so I just started drifting away from BtVS. I watched it enough to do my website analyses, but I was an AtS gal by that point.

I like Buffy well enough, but I've always been an Angel fan myself, no question.

I hadn't heard many negative opinions about Season 6 on LJ until this post (and obviously second-hand, since most of your comments are coming in in favor of it). By "negative opinions", I mean, "I disliked the season, I liked other seasons better". Of course there are always "this or that episode/story line was poorly written", I've read those before. But the sheer number of people I've read in fandom who think season 6 is the Best!Season!Ever is mind-boggling to me, because personally, it's on my list at the bottom, just above season 7.

ouch! take care of yourself, ok? (I don't know if it's available outside the US, but arnica gel is a great herbal remedy for achey muscles....)

That's actually a good tip. I have a jar of something called 'Horse Salve' which has Arnica in it. Just have to find it.

I am not a B/S shipper (I think they're bad for each other) but I thought the B/S storyline in season 6 was perfect. Now the Willow storyline was a whole different deal.

[identity profile] astridv.livejournal.com 2006-01-14 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I did like the Willow storyline well enough while I was watching the season. Then I read some fanfic, and I realized who much better it could've been handled. But overall, s6 is still one of my favourite seasons of Buffy.

Actually I can imagine B/S working, as well as B/A. And C/A, obviously ;o). Just takes a convincing writer to get me on board a ship. But in the end I think Angel and Spike are pretty good for each other, really. They can bicker like a married couple for eternity, and work out their issues together. And [*snip* because I'm keeping this journal PG].

non-PG A/S? Right there with you.
