lolz

Found this in my mail today:
Dear Administrator, My name is Jennifer, I'm promoting successful bingo sites in the UK and found your website http://cliche-bingo.livejournal.com/data/atom very reputable and fits to my needs.
I am looking for quality websites to support us in promoting our client's websites and I would be more than happy to send you more information about our proposal.

Kink Bingo being a much more respectable concept than actual bingo, I would think so.

(Such a distaste I have for Glücksspiel: institutionalised cons, preying on hopes.)

And in the wake outright scams too. Like the calls you get claiming you won something. Just recently I got a call again, from someone, claiming I had won some vacation or other. I said that I hadn't participated in anything, and of course when I tried to press them to give me an actual company name for whom they called they wouldn't do that either. I mean, that has to be illegal, and yet. I get called all the time by these. Though at least the actual lotteries seem to hassle you less these days. It's been ages since I was last called by some NKL telemarketer wanting to sell me lottery tickets.

Lotteries bother me marginally less because they at least are controlled (if still cashing in on similar notions). But as you say, what a desperately unconscionable thing to do. Grr, argh.

My main association with gambling is frankly squalor, because the several Spielhallen in my neighborhood are its most depressing part. They always look exude such an air of despair and neglect, and look really uninviting, which may be for the better, but they don't look like entertaining places (even strip bars come across as less sleazy in comparison). I have no idea how all of these can even exist, and yet there are three of them in about a block of walking distance.

Same here -- 'tis a pretty nice area of town, and yet, there's one of them only five or so minutes away. My personal experience doesn't extend to them; I've never been in one not for ideological but pretty much what you describe.
