art spam, with chickens

This is the cathedral in the center of my home town. The chickens were actually there the year I painted this - they had escaped from the farmers market and were roaming free on the marketplace in front of the cathedral all summer. At night they slept in the trees. The people who were supposed to catch them didn't try very hard. They put up a few cages for show, and then they'd place the bait in front of the cages to make sure the chickens wouldn't go in by accident. The painting itself took insanely long and convinced me that the style of photorealism needs to be avoided at all cost.

Lovely. How I envy your ease and lightness of touch with architecture! And the chickens are painted such loving detail.

I wish you could come here and do my buildings for me. I have to do a bunch for these historical graphic novels, and I hate to even touch a ruler. :P

That's so funny. Do you know how much I envy your ease when it comes to drawing dynamic human figures? I was _awed_ by the little sketch of your teen fighters you posted the other day. Architecture, on the other hand, is so easy somehow.

But there's a reason why I left the fight scenes in my Angel comic for last. *gulp*

I avoid using rulers for architecture. This building I drew freehand, with a number of photos I made for reference. As soon as I try to really construct something, making sure all lines going exactly through the vanishing points 'n stuff... it doesn't look natural any more. Weird, really.

Thanks for the new background picture for my computer :). I do like all the details in it. Is the painting inspired from another painting?, it seems familiar in some strange way (no, I don’t know anything about art and painting)

Hey, you're welcome. :) Is the resolution good enough, though? I can always mail you a larger scan with better detail, if you'd like.

Inspired... nope, unless subconsciously. The way it turned out, it looks somewhere between renaissance art and surrealism, I guess...? (the bit about falling asleep in art history is a good indicator of my knowledge of the subject in general.)

I had no particular concept for this, I basically just painted what was there, because I liked the idea of the birds in front of that majestic, old building. Except the chickens wouldn't cooperate and come close enough, so I had to improvise there.

If you have a better resolution, I would like that. I uses normaly 1280*1024 pixel on my monitor

hmmm, könnte das vielleicht Münster sein? Sieht jedenfalls ganz super toll aus. Unheimlich realistisch.
