Comic Con - part 1

Hi, internet! I'm sitting at San Diego airport right now... my connection to Minneapolis isn't the best, and our plane is already half an hour delayed, so let's hope I'll make my connecting flight.

On the plus side, free airport WiFi! So I can finally write about comic con. Or at least post a few pictures. ([personal profile] jwaneeta has more)

Yep, this pic is taken from a plane as well...

I met [livejournal.com profile] jwaneeta in our room and we headed out to have us some Indian food. The eating in San Diego remains unbeatable. Want restaurant recs? We discovered two great new places this time.

Okay, so Thursday morning we got our badges, and went off to talk to people and check out the panels. I was extremely lucky this time: I got into every panel I wanted and I didn't have to stand in line once. Everybody who was at con will recognize how awesome that is.

Panels... lemme see. Michael Lovitz's three part Comic Book Law School is still interesting and lively, I highly recommend it. This time around we even got to touch on fair use... the previous times he always got sidetracked by trademark discussions or the like.

The Physics of SciFi Movies was fun. We watched scenes from movies and poked fun at the wonky science. It was great. If our physics teacher had only been half as entertaining as this guy, I wouldn't have dropped that class soon as I could.

I skipped part 2 of the Law School panel on Friday to go to the Stargate Universe panel. I haven't read any fan reactions yet... actually I barely got to read LJ at all during the past week. I'm sure a bunch of people wrote detailed panel reports, but for what it's worth, my reaction: I'm still incredibly annoyed that they cancelled my show for this new one. Just for the record.

That said, and looking at it from a lessed biased viewpoint, the trailer did look interesting, and I will check it out. The basic idea does not sound as original as the creators seem to want us to think, mind - actually it sounds a lot like Voyager at the very beginning... bunch of mismatched and conflicting characters, thrown together against their will and stuck with each other in the middle of nowhere. But Voyager never really told that story (and I never watched BSG), so, you know... I'm mildly curious.

The mood in the room was, hm, not exactly enthusiastic but not negative either. More like, politely curious. (comparing it to the Torchwood panel, which also had a number of disgruntled fans but nonetheless a ballroom abrim with squee and applause... but more on that later. :)

The Q&A session was pretty good. The advantage of having a panel for a new show is that no one is asking inappropriately personal or embarrassing questions of the actors, because no one really cares much about them yet. Quite a few Carlyle fans in the room though. I heard from a number of people around me that they never watched SG but will tune in for him. Can't say anything about his character except that he's supposed to have edges and dark spots. Anyway, I liked his responses during the Q&A; refreshingly honest, not so much with the Hollywood blahblah.

I did like that two of the actors went down to the dealers room to take pics of themselves in front of the Stargate. *g* (And then they were invited to enter a contest to win a walk-on role on the show.)

Too soon to say much about the actors and characters... except I didn't much care for the guy who's apparently playing the hot young hero and soldier. Too cocky for my taste. But he might be alright when he's in character; I don't even remember him from the trailer, tbh.

Okay, I'll have to go offline soon so I'll take a break here. Next up, Torchwood, and San Diego sightseeing. John Barrowman fans on my flist, this one's for you. :)
