fic rec: DS9 (Jake Sisko)

fic rec: Just one quick DS9 rec, then it's back to Stargate.
I already rec'd Talking Stick/Circle, a fantastic, epic Voyager series by Macedon and Peg Robinson. (part 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8)
You don't need to watch Voyager in order to enjoy these stories; they're arguably better than almost any given episode of the show itself, anyway.
... can't believe how long it took to find working links for these... I mean, those are *classics*, man.

Macedon also wrote Jeu-Parti, a DS9 three-parter that is every bit as good. The series spans over several years and revolves around the relationship between Jake Sisko and a young Vulcan singer. Jake's characterization is on to start with, and Macedon adds layers and dimension to what we've seen in canon. Salene, the Vulcan, is so three-dimensional and fascinating a character that he can carry his share of the story, easily. Macedon writes gripping plot and explores all kinds of complex themes while telling his story. If you don't like slash, if you don't read DS9, I say you'd still enjoy this series. It's just that good and original. (The first part is gen.)

Part 1: Orfeo (by Macedon & J)
Jake/OC friendship; PG; 10,000 words
Summary: When Bajor hosts an interstellar music festival, to which a very unusual star singer is invited, Jake must face questions about friendship, manhood and culture, as well as freedoms of belief.

Returning to the cabin-suite he shared with his father, Jake tried focusing attention on something marginally productive: his writing. He pondered using a castrato for a character in a story, but shied away from it. 'Write what you know.' And he certainly did not know about *that*.
"JakeO!"
His father was home; Jake set aside the PADD and rose, wandered out into the main room. "Hey, Dad."
Sisko stood just inside the doorway, hands clasped before him in that way he had: poised to speak but frozen the moment before. Then he dropped his hands to his side and smiled. "There's a special guest who needs an escort. He's around your age and I wondered if you'd be willing to show him around the station? The two of you might get along."
Jake's internal warning buzzer went off. "One of the musicians?"
"Yes, one of the musicians."
Almost, almost, Jake asked, The castrato?--but checked himself. If his father knew of his interest, he might change his mind. His father had mixed feelings about Jake's occasional obsessions with research. 'Learn about people because they interest you, JakeO...not because you want story ideas.'

part 2: Eye of the Storm
Jake/OC; R; 46,000 words

part 3: Anslem (by J & Macedon)
Jake/OC; PG-13; 49,000 words
Summary: Eleven years after his abrupt, late-night departure, Salene reappears in Jake's life. He finds a twenty-nine-year-old Jake whose writing career is beginning to blossom even while his private life is falling apart.

A quick update to my SG Fan Awards question from earlier regarding the pro rule:
I heard back from the mod I asked; it turns out that professionals are only excluded if they've published in the Stargate 'verse, everything else is fine. They cleared that bit up a little in the rules as well.

The new pingbackbot feature is quite neat. What do you do with these notifications? Unscreen? Leave them screened? Just curious.

I'm between projects *and* I have a cold (AGAIN, WTF!) Therefore the frequent posting. I'm off work, the weather is great, and these past three days all I wanted to do was lie on my bed and read fic. The first two days were great, but by now I'm really ready to explore the outside of the house for a change. (But not like today when I went for groceries and forgot my key and had to seek refuge at a friend's (who was supposed to have a spare key for our house, which she didn't. What she did have was a cold, also. I just hope it's the same virus.)

I was browsing around Fanlore and found out that the one time I use the word "fucking" in a post, I immediately get quoted in a wiki. LOL (Seriously, I got a kick out of seeing the link.)

I have wondered about the pingback function, but since I don't write at the moment, obviously no one links to me. & ;-)

You can test it by linking to some of your old posts. I just got a notification for quoting my old recs post.

They're sending an email notification, plus the pingbot comment shows up screened on the quoted post. It's a pretty nifty feature, I think.

I'm halfway through Jeu-Parti and it's soooooooooo good. Thank you for the rec!! This is one of the best stories I've read in a long time.

Yay, I'm glad you're enjoying it! I just printed out part 1, because all this talk made me want to reread it myself.

I'd unscreen pingbacks if they lead to related posts readers of my post might be interested in as well.

Yeah, mine too. Just looking up the links and talking about it, I got compelled to re-read the whole thing. Might as well make the most out of that cold. :)I just finished Eye Of The Storm. These fics are every bit as good as I remembered.

Re: pingbacks. I say unscreen them to encourage others to turn them on in their journal. They are totally cool! I think some people are worried that if they say something (not so nice) about someone, now that person will get notified. Okay, maybe that was just me! :D At any rate, anything you say that's not for the general public is presumably under friendslock and those aren't subject to pings.

What, you think people have them turned off? They're so awesome!

Okay, I went back and unscreened them. That was my first impulse; I unscreen everything that's not a troll or spammer.

I think some people are worried that if they say something (not so nice) about someone, now that person will get notified.

Heh. That's true. Brings more transparence, though. I like transparence. And really, if someone's posting something not nice about someone else without locking it, chances are the someone else will get notified by their friends faster than by the bot. *g*

At any rate, anything you say that's not for the general public is presumably under friendslock and those aren't subject to pings.

Right. Or they can just leave the link uncoded... I doubt the ljbot would pick that up.

It's a really cool tool, for reccers and meta discussions alike. I hope folk will make use of it.

I found this entry purely by chance. I thought you might like to know that apparently he moved his website. I was liking to it for the essay on writing and it suddenly went dead. After a little hunting, I found the site resurrected. It has the series there too, and I know some people have been looking for where the site went, so please pass it on.

Oh, thank you! I'm editing that link in. It's good to see the site is still around, it was a real shame to see it gone.
