a wee little Stargate Fan Awards question

I was nominated for the Stargate Fan Awards which made me happy. But I'm confused regarding the eligibility rules:

from the rules:
The Stargate Fan Awards are intended for amateur fan writers and artists. Although we realize that professionals are also fans, professionals have other avenues for receiving recognition for their works. We ask that you do NOT participate in these awards if you meet the criteria below:

1. You sell your works under a licensing agreement or through an authorized publishing agency, and

2. You have published works within the Science Fiction / Fantasy genre.

For example:

If you sell your own works via internet download, you probably don't have an MGM licensing agreement, so you may participate in the awards. We aren't condoning the lack of licensing; we're just acknowledging amateur status. You may also participate if you've published in fanzines.

If you have published works through Fandemonium or other publishers, or your graphic artwork has been used as cover art for licensed DVDs, we ask that you don't participate.

It's very confusing, the way it's phrased. I read some discussion of the question here and I'm even more confused. #1. and #2. are both 'yes' for me, it's just that the actual examples don't apply at all. I certainly never had any dealings with Fandemonium or MGM.

So, does my illustration work in the children's book genre disqualify me, or does this rule only apply to people who're published in the same genre (or even only in the Gateverse)? And if so, does the one licensed Outer Limits tie-in comic I drew twelve years ago count because it's Sci-Fi/Fantasy? I honestly can't tell.

To complicate things further, what about "The Long Way Home" which is a collaboration where the writer is eligible, if maybe not the artist? *scratch head*

I've gone back and forth, but I think I'll probably have to bow out. Nonetheless, I was asquee when I saw I was nominated. So, thanks anyway to whoever did that. :)

I think I'll try to find the part where they're asking soul-searching questions and see if that clears things up.

eta: I heard back from the mod I asked; it turns out that professionals are only excluded if they've published in the Stargate 'verse, everything else is fine. They cleared that bit up a little in the rules as well.

As I understood it (though I admit that I found this somewhat unclear too) they don't want anyone who does writing or art as a job to participate, not just in the genre or just SG stuff.

Personally I admit I find this somewhat pointless, since it's not as if getting paid for something actually means that much for quality, but then I don't care much for fan awards anyway.

*nods* there's that.

As I've seen others parse it, the spirit of their intent seems to be 'no one who is a professional.'

Mm. It appears so. I'm just confused by the repeated mention of 'licensing agreement' which suggests that this rule only refers to works set in the gateverse. (Also, that would make more sense to me, so it's easier to read it that way...)

Try talking to Nebulan over on deviantArt, as she's one of the Art mods for the SGFAwards. <http://nebulan.deviantart.com/>
I always read this sort of thing as excluding "professional" artists. For example, Kheelan has done some awesome SGA work but he is a professional comic artist in RL, so I assume he wouldn't be eligible.
Anyhoo,I suspect that I am merely one of many who would have nominated you :D

Thanks for the info, I think I'll do that.

And many thanks for nominating in the first place, even if I can't play. :)
*reading more closely* or, you know, for wanting to. *g*

I checked my fav's for Kheelan; you're right, he's very good. I love his John&Kolya pic.
