No time to post yet, too much work. Just a link to an excellent post on Mightygodking about the whole Scans Daily vs Peter David debacle.

It occurred to me how ironic it would be if sales of X-Factor ended up tripling over this whole wank. No such thing as bad publicity seems to hold true quite often, after all. (The only counter-example I can think of would be the Wiki That Must Not Be Named.) PAD sure got everybody talking about it, if not in the way he'd have liked. I never even heard of that series before.

Off to sketch another page, then I can go to the gym. A system of small rewards works best. :)
Spring is finally here so I went running yesterday, for the first time in, like, six weeks. MAN I HAVE MISSED THIS! How have I managed without? I felt awesome for the rest of the day, woke up and still felt great. :O)
Okay, off to work for real. Fic recs later.

I was one those who was on scans daily, I also posted some scan-translated comics of Peter Madsens Valhalla, So I did probably break a copyright law somewhere, perhaps I should, but I am not really feeling guilty over this.

For me was it interesting space who reconnected me to Marvels comics, after I have walked away from them, after the XXtreme comics of the nineties. And it made me also buy some trades, out from post posted there, X-factor was ironic one of them. Peter David is a good/intelligent comic writer, but this debacle just cement my decision, on avoiding creators opinions outside theirs work.

I think all in all Scans-Daily, was a posetive thing for the comic industry, but nobody can say for sure.

It was a perfect example of grassroots marketing, in an industry that needs every bit of successful marketing it can get. I think half the pages are prooobably stretching the interpretation of "fair use" (I'd never post more than two or three to be on the safe side) but even so, the community arguably helped creators, instead of damaged their business. Giving people free samples increases sales. Jeez, that's marketing 101.

I mean, what do you want to do with half a comic book? If the story is good, it'll make you want to read the full thing even more. I consider it equivalent with leafing through a comic in a store. I don't buy comics either that the store owner won't let me take out of the bag before buying.

Peter David's actions were, imho, completely moronic. He couldn't stand people talking about his comic in ways he disapproved of, so he used copyright infringement as an excuse to have the post taken down and went to Marvel to tattle. And Marvel went to LJ and said, "BOO!" and LJ, as usual in these cases, said "EEK" and caved without even looking into the facts. (High time for Dreamwidth to launch, is all I'm saying.)

Thank you for the link! I think it's the best (and most balanced) summary of the whole situation that I've seen so far.

You're welcome. I thought so, too.
