fic recs [SGA]

Finished a work project => another comic page coming tomorrow or so. It's already inked, just needs some color slapped on.

a couple of quick fic recs:
Rewind by [livejournal.com profile] lizzypaul
McKay/Sheppard; PG13; Spoilers: Through "Quarantine"; 4800 words
Summary: Rodney is stuck in an endless Monday.

I want to do a list of time-loop fics at some point (my favorite trope, and here's a fandom where there's not just one but at least a dozen and they're all good... how can you beat that?!) This story is fun, well-written with an interesting character angle.

Unexpected Hazards of the Best Friend Relationship by [livejournal.com profile] argosy
McKay/Keller, McKay/Sheppard; PG; generally spoilery for Brain Storm; 2750 words
Summary: When Rodney and Jennifer break up, John really wants to be there for his friend.

I've been looking for stories that deal with the John/Rodney/Jennifer triangle while treating all three characters with respect, and this story does just that. Very believable take on the relationships.

Heaven for Beginners by [livejournal.com profile] wojelah
McKay/Keller; R; Spoilers: for Brain Storm (5x16); ~1,200 words
Summary: "They've had a lot of "dates" - for Jennifer, the conferences are really pretty much old hat these days, and she considers herself something of an expert in the peculiar sociology of astrophysicists."

A few photo posts from the friends list:
[livejournal.com profile] naye: pictures from Japan, more pictures from Japan. (These are just a few examples, she's got a whole bunch more.)
[livejournal.com profile] lakrids404: Shooting Para-gliders
[livejournal.com profile] newkidfan: Lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of pictures.

Robert Carlyle cast as the lead in SGU. I admit, for the first time I'm at least mildly interested in their shiny new toy (though still bitter, mind...) In deference to the fact that they got a respectable actor - and one who's well over 25, even - I'm not using my SG-90210 icon as I usually would now.

...Robert Carlyle? For real? That's... unexpected. Also, bonus points, he's a grown up!

(I suppose it's still early days - after all, Genevieve Bujold was the original Capt Janeway.)

Carlyle? And SGA got too expensive? *Ahem*

So Robert Carlyle (who is 7 years older than David Hewlett) got cast as Head Scientist. Does that mean that the Colonel Young character got scratched? Or is that also going to be a Big Name older person? I'm trying to figure out how they're saving money and appealing to a younger demographic here. *still bitter over treatment of SGA cast*

(Not that Robert Carlyle wasn't totally terrific in The Full Monty. :D).

I'm not following this closely but from what I read Carlyle is playing the scientist, and someone else will get the role of the commander. So I guess that'd mean at least two grown-ups on board. Maybe they did take the SG-90210 jokes to heart.

*still bitter over treatment of SGA cast*

Yup, me too. Treatment of cast and audience both...

Yeah, I know, doesn't make too much sense. But, well, at least they got a high-profile actor who's actually great at his job, and not the latest overrated Hollywood flavor-of-the-month name.

Maybe they belatedly realized the flaws in their single-minded pursuit of the mysterious 15-25 demographic and the dismissal of their existing audience. All those SG-90210 comments must be hard to miss even for TPTB.

No matter, it was an idiotic move to cancel SGA while it was going strong. Idiotic.
