Status report:
*Sound on my computer - back on; new sound card did the trick. \o/
*Video on computer- still gone. Will deal with that problem at a later time.
*Amplifier - still at the shop. May or may not be fixable. Me, I'm still marveling at the wonder of sound coming from my computer and am thus in a much mellower mood than last week.
*Handymen - still in the basement, doing their thing. Waking me up around 8 every morning. My usual bedtime is between 2 and 4 am.
*comic, page 4 - inked, awaiting coloring.
*Frankfurt Book Fair -
I went to the Book Fair last Thursday, just for the one day - Book Fair light, just a handful of meetings scheduled. It was a good trip, worth even the insane train fare. Now, if you're looking for an interesting report of the goings-on at the Fair, you've so come to the wrong LJ. (Instead check out [livejournal.com profile] selenak's two posts.) Me, I didn't venture out of hall 3.0 (kids books and comics) all afternoon. I hear there was other stuff going on. Lots of other stuff. Hundreds of events. Millions of books. It's sensory overload trying to take it all in, so I learned to focus on one aspect and ignore everything else. That worked very well, I felt invigorated instead of drained afterward.

I did hear a very interesting talk by an American comics... retailer, I think (who's name and exact occupation I didn't catch as I got there late)... Cyn, I think you would've liked the guy. He shared many facts and anecdotes from his decades of working in the industry, also happily shared his theory that a lot of the problems in today's comic market are caused by the morons in management. Like the time when Marvel (iirc) sent them digital versions of new releases two days before the actual release date, which dealers could then put up online, and which led to an average 20% increase in comic book sales for those issues... then when the boss at Marvel learned about it, he fired the people responsible (for the 20% increase in sales) because you "don't give away comics for free". I wasn't surprised, neither at hearing that giving people free samples improves business instead of detracting from it, nor by the other part.
*fic recs - coming up
But here, have some youtube clips of unconventional instruments:
Hang Drum Solo I saw a guy playing the Hang at the farmer's market and was fascinated by the sound and the way you play it. Googled around and learned that it's near impossible to get those instruments.
A beautiful duet of Hurdy-Gurdy & Theremin (The theremin comes in at 3:00)

Oh, for heaven's sake. Yeah, that sounds about right. *shakes head*

Oooh, that hang drum solo thing is so cool! Albeit, it started to put me to sleep...although, that may be because I'm really tired. LOL! Still, cool!

Great youtube clips - loved the Hang Drum one especially, sounds very similar to one of the instruments you'd find in a gamelan?

Plus Hurdy Gurdy - awesome.

I love the particular tone of the hang, it's a pity those instruments are so impossible to get your hands on. Not only do they only make a handful every year, you have to pass a test that shows you're already a skilled musician worthy of playing a hang. Shame...

My roommate is totally fascinated by the theremin, but its very unique sound is said to drive cats up the wall (or under the bed) so she isn't getting one. (phew!) I did like it in the clip I linked above, but overall its sound is a bit too ghostly for my taste to listen to on a regular basis.

Oh, thanks for the link.

Isn't the Hang fascinating? I never heard of it before either. A friend of mine is a passionate hobby musician, she's right now looking for a new melody instrument and I immediately thought this would be the perfect instrument for her. Alas, looks like it's not to be.

I haven't been genuinely interested in playing music since I gave up playing the recorder when I was 15 and fed up with practicing... but when I saw that guy at the market, I really wished to try it out myself.
