fanart [SGA]: Clear Blue Skies

Still haven't started on my taxes. But, I'm feeling accomplished because instead I colored my [livejournal.com profile] livelongnmarry pic for [livejournal.com profile] greyias, who gave me an open prompt for a friendshippy John/Rodney scene.

[eta: [livejournal.com profile] telesilla wrote comment fic, and it's perfect. Squee.]

Taxes next, for real. That elves plan isn't working out.

[eta: the images look slightly blurry in Firefox, particularly the smaller one. In IE they look okay. In fact ever since I upgraded FF, my LJ pages are distorted, a bit wider than my screen. Anyone else notice that or is it just me? Just in case, here's a direct link to the image.]

[son of eta: found the problem... had to switch to 'zoom text only'.]

Oh, John looks so young and full of happy for flying things! I love it!!

[identity profile] dovil.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
That I adore the boys goes without questions, but I absolutely love the world you've set out in the background. It's sparse but busy and interesting all at the same time.

That's wonderful! I love John's expression especially. And the background is lovely! Do you work on bristol?

I love this! I really, really love this!

Fabriano hot pressed. Actually I ink on drawing board (I'm using the house brand at Boesner, which is inexpensive and really great for both pencil and ink), then I scan the artwork and print it onto the watercolor paper.

full of happy for flying things!

Yay, that's what I was going for. :) Glad you like it!

Thanks, really glad you like. For ages I've been having this idea for a tiny comic thing that's set in a similar setting, and so far I haven't got around to that. This was really fun to design. (Turned out a bit more Arizona-like than I planned, for some reason - but if every other planet looks like Vancouver, surely some will look like the South-West.)

"and sail along the silver sky"

[identity profile] telesilla.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
"Balloons?" Rodney stared up at the balloons and then at John's happy expression. "But...but...you like things that go 200mph!"

"It's still flying," John said, looking up into the clear blue sky. "You ever been up in a balloon, Rodney?"

"Me? Trust myself to a bag of nylon and hot air? Do I look crazy?"

"It's quiet, or mostly so." John's face relaxed a little and suddenly, he looked young and maybe even a little wistful. "You just...drift along, nothing but sky all around you."

"Oh." Rodney paused for a long moment. "Okay."

"Okay what?"

"I'll build you one. One that you can trust not to tear or fail and dump you into the ocean."

"You...." John smiled, a broad real smile. "Yeah?"

"I said so didn't I?" Rodney felt his mouth twitch, just a little at the corners. "But you need to know one thing."

"What's that?"

"I draw the line at hang gliders." He raised his chin. "I'm not going to build a deathtrap for a friend...um...for you."

"Thanks," John said. "Thanks, Rodney. Once you build it, I'll take you up in it."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah. It'll be cool, you'll see."

This looks great. It makes me wonder whether John and Rodney have brought some flying contraption to this meeting too.

Oh, how gorgeous! I love the beautiful, interesting world you've created and the look of wonder on John's face. (I think he found where he wants to retire. *g*) The boardwalk makes me think a little bit of the cliff village in Riven (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riven).

[identity profile] calcitrix.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Ah. I've never worked on hot pressed. Obviously it's got a smoother finish. Neat-O!

[identity profile] toysdream.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
Awww, that's so amazingly cute! It almost seems weird to see Sheppard so relaxed and happy. Let's put it down to the romance of unpowered flight. :-)

I love how you've worked in a little bit of the gate, too, just to flesh out the story.

[identity profile] villainny.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
That's just delightful. I can't stop grinning!

Dude, I found *no* screen cap for relaxed and happy Sheppard, will you believe that? I had to improvise.

Oh, squee, comment fic! Thank you, this makes me happy. Yes, I imagine something just like this.

(I got a little comic all scribbled and everything, which takes place in this setting and is kind of in that vein, except it does involve a hang glider. :) It was for the 'fight of flight' challenge last year, I got the idea a day before the deadline so it never went anywhere. Now I'm really in the mood to ink that in time for amnesty this year.

Oh that sounds cool! I just love the idea of John being into less complicated types of flight as well as jumpers and choppers and so on. And of course, Rodney would be all flaily and "OMG! Deathtraps!"

This is a fantastic picture; I really like the expressions on their faces and the composition with the hints of cliff dwellings and the various low tech flying devices.

Eeee~! So gorgeous! So sweet! The quiet wistfulness in John's face, and Rodney intent on John, and... oh. Extremely lovely. ♥

And I love the idea of a world where people have to find a way to cross a chasm to get anywhere from the gate.

Me too. I think it's all about the flying for him, not the tech.

"Balloons?" Rodney stared up at the balloons and then at John's happy expression. "But...but...you like things that go 200mph!"

That is such a great opening line. :o)

Oh god! I love it. That is so adorable, Sheppard's longing look at the zeppelins and McKay's look of indulgence at Sheppard. (I'm a bit worried about the constructional soundness of that wooden platform. I hope Rodney checked it out before they sat down. *g*)
