:/

News is out that SGA got cancelled. I'm with [livejournal.com profile] rheanna27 - ever since I discovered the show last summer, I feel like I arrived late for a really great party. And now the party's apparently about to end and I've just started to get comfortable, with my drink and my food platter and good company. Damn, this sucks. This sucks toads through a straw. I could've had years more of this. *wrings hair* Stupid, stupid timing!

I console myself with the fact that Angel fandom didn't end when the show did - the fandom went on strong for a good while, only started to fizzle after years. We had a few virtual seasons that were almost like watching the show. And since the fic output and sheer quality in SGA have always outshadowed even that in AtS (imho), I'm hoping that once there's no new canon, fandom will pick up the slack and go on even stronger.

Still, it's not the same. No new canon. Okay, some new canon, but a two hour movie instead of a full season? Wah. I guess better than nothing...

But Angel fandom also taught me not to put my hopes in 'save our show' campaigns. If the Save Angel campaign couldn't achieve anything, I don't see how anything can.

Well, I've seen campaigns have an impact for shows like Farscape (though we just got a tv movie out of that, but it was far better than having nothing especially considering how S4 ended -- I'm still disgruntled with SciFi for how they treated that show), Roswell, The Sentinel,... there's probably others, so they aren't completely hopeless. But with their tv movie announcement they kind of did a preemptive "we're not really cancelling your show" cop out to blunt the anger, I guess because they hope to not completely alienate the audience in anticipation for their new Stargate thing, which has to have a potential audience overlap.

ITA

I'm feeling some resentment toward the new thing, since it feels like our show had to make room for it. I'll probably check it out anyway, but I'm not expecting much.

I think a lot of people will feel like that (I know I do, already), which is not the best way to start off a new show.

It's a shame: SGA felt like it had quite a lot of life left in it, and the start of season 5 has been really strong so far.

*sobs*. I need a hug.

And that was a predictable reaction, too. Many - I'd say most - hardcore fans are more invested the characters than a 'verse. I mean, I can see how it would've been difficult logistically or financially to run two shows parallel for a whole season, but I wish they'd at least compromise and give us half a season of SGA. I just watched the first season of 'The Wire': you can tell a good, complex story in eleven episodes.

Right - and on British TV, 11 or 12 eps *is* a season -- in fact, sometimes I think it's easier for a show to maintain a higher quality overall when they're not under the huge pressure of churning out 20 or 22 eps.

*hugs you back*

oh GOD! That's the worse news Ever. And I knew it was going to happen, ever since Joe M. hinted on his blog about his exciting new spin off and the oh so expensive SGA and not having time to run two SGA shows concurrently.

I didn't start watching SGA until a year ago but I haven't had this much fun with a series ever. Boy, this sucks. I don't want a movie. I want season 6.

Yeah, it kind of looks like SGA was sacrificed for the new Stargate show. *grumbles*. I don't want a new show, I want to see my characters. Stargate without McKay... meh. :/

I've been that much into shows before and it was fun, but I've never been this inspired by something. I look at the fanart I've done so far, and I can barely believe that all of it was created in just over a year. Sigh.

I was somewhat involved in NCIS (ok, heavily involved), but that was on forums, not in fandom. And SGA fandom is amazing: the art, the fanfic, the vids, I've not seen this much talent concentrated in one fandom before. I hope it will continue for a bit (SG-1 has hardly slowed down I think), but the lack of fresh canon will suck big time.

God, I will miss my McShep. :(

As a fellow joined-fandom-last-summer... I know what you mean. But we had a year, and we have each other - we have this lovely, sweet, talented, wonderful fandom. ♥

Exactly! I mean, yeah, I just want to kick myself that I haven't checked out the show years earlier... but on the other hand I was lucky to discover it at all, and I've had more fun with fandom in the last year than I had in a long time, if ever.

So yeah, this sucks but I'm trying to see the positive aspects. If there's a fandom that can flourish even without new canon, it's this one. And five years is a good run - a decent amount of canon to build upon. (I'm still gonna miss seeing McKay on the screen, man... )
