Rec of the day

No fanfic today, instead I'm reccing the YA novel I devoured yesterday. I rarely read original fiction these days but this one grabbed me. I opened it just to take a quick peek before work and couldn't put it down again:

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie
The hero of this story is Arnold Spirit Junior, of the Spokane reservation, aspiring cartoonist, born with water on the brain and a number of handicaps that have made him designated punching ball to every bully in sight. When he transfers to an all-white school outside the reservation, his life doesn't get less complicated.

The story is semi-autobiographical, and it would be relentlessly depressing in the way it's depicting life on the Spokane reservation (Junior notices at some point: "But somehow or another, Indians have forgotten that reservations were meant to be death camps.") but even with all the tragedy in Junior's life, the story is warm, spirited, and as funny in some places as it is heartbreaking in others. The cartoon illustrations fit perfectly, too.

(If you're in Germany and want this book, drop me a line and I'll send it to you. Postage on me, first come first serve. My roommate might want to read it first but she's a quick reader.)

I didn't really plan to but I saw y'all shiny cards and so I signed up for h/c Bingo. Last year I didn't even finish one measly prompt... there was all that stress at work, and also nothing on my card that really grabbed me. But since they got an amnesty for lazy slackers this round, I'm gonna have another go.
