fic rec

Transference by [livejournal.com profile] semivowel
McKay/Sheppard; Rating: NC-17?; ~13,000 words
Summary: John doesn't like to be touched. Except by certain people. Rodney doesn't get it at first. Then he does. Includes: two druggings, one kidnapping, a stomach wound, a planet of gay warriors, pseudo-psycho-babble, team-bonding, and supply-closet sex.

semivowel merrily takes a bunch of fave fanfic tropes, mixes them up good, wraps them in a cool plot with great characterization and spot-on voices, and the result is one funny, smart, entertaining fic. I love the slow relationship build-up between the two.
snippet:On DFX-306, Rodney fixed a problem with the city’s Ancient defense grid while Teyla made polite chit-chat with the head of the council, and Sheppard and Ronon got a tour of the capitol dome. The government of Fas was grateful and appropriately effusive when Rodney finished repairs, which was gratifying. And then they decided they wanted to keep him, which wasn’t so gratifying (It’s been 42 days since our last kidnapping/drugging/use of a last resort contingency plan).

I've been musing about the fanon/canon thing since in the past two months I've watched three seasons of Atlantis and read, hm, a couple hundred fics... and it's somewhat weird when you get to know the show from both fanon and canon POV simultaneously: they start to blend into each other to the point where you can't tell where one starts and the other ends. There were a few occasions where I was certain something was fanon until I actually got to that point in the show where they did just that. And vice versa. Gives you a kind of stereo optical view. Possibly a little distorted in places where the two contradict each other. :)

Tomorrow I'm headed for the Frankfurt Book Fair, just for the one day though. Four hour train ride each way... I've got my stack of fic printed and ready, I got my sketch book, and Trusty Laptop will accompany me as well. To mix things up a little German Rail has hinted at strikes. Sure hope they're bluffing. Do not want! You hear that, Deutsche Bahn?
