astridv: Ronon and Todd vs a troup of Wraith (In The Pale Moonlight by astridv)
Thursday, June 27th, 2013 07:57 pm
It's been a while since I've read a SGA fic I found this captivating. I'm saying right away though, this is not a fun, feel-good fic. But while I'm not really a fan of darkfic or horror, I found this story well-rounded and satisfying to read. Just, maybe have something short and lighthearted ready for reading after.

The Light of Compassion by [archiveofourown.org profile] vain_glorious
Gen; ensemble; horror/canon AU; character deaths; rated mature for dark content; 34134 words
Summary: A year after the events of 5X01 "Search and Rescue," tragedy strikes Atlantis.

SGA rec: Intergalactic Topology for Beginners by [livejournal.com profile] ladyofthelog
Rodney/Teyla, Torren; humor/snapshots/romance, PG; 1410 words
Summary: Rodney can't help but appreciate Teyla's facility with knots. On a purely academic level, of course.

5 things ronon doesn't want anyone to know about him by [livejournal.com profile] bratfarrar (SGA)

Gen; character study; ~400 words

bonus rec... well, I don't know if anyone here is into Ninja Warrior and Japanese language but just in case... I found the complete 2011 final of NW in 5 installlments on Youtube. Ninja Warrior 27 1 FINAL Good picture and sound quality, no annoying English voice over. Also no subtitles but, it's a hundred people running through an obstacle parcours and half the time the commentator is describing what's happening on the screen.

I won't even call this a guilty pleasure, I like this show in an entirely unironic way. :)

A World Called Catastrophe by [livejournal.com profile] perspi (SGA)
8168 words; gen; PG-13; genre: team friendship, h/c
Summary: When the world ends in a flash of orange and yellow, the last thing John feels is the sensation of flying.

Once again read so long ago that I don't remember the content; here's what I commented with: "This was totally amazing!"
... yeah, I know, not really that informative. Check it out? :o)

The upside of having a brain like a SIEVE is that I can now re-read some nice long SGA fic and be surprised by the plot all over again. Sweet.

I haven't gotten much any work done today but I'd figured that's okay, I'll do it after dark. That means I should work now. In no way should I play Portal, advanced chamber 14.
Maybe work a little, then play a little...
This game is so much fun! I'm starting to learn how to throw a cube. :)

The Puppet Master by Cybersyd (SGA)
alternatively on ffn
67091 words; Gen; PG-13; Characters: Rodney McKay, John Sheppard, Carson Beckett, Elizabeth Weir; Angst,Drama,h/c
Summary: The Atlantis crew fear McKay's genius has slipped into insanity. Are their worst fears realised, or is there something sinister at work?

This is another one I read so long ago that I can't remember any details, just that I enjoyed the ride. So, um, if you enjoy long SGA fic of the gen variety (and Rodney whump. I vaguely recall Rodney whump :), check it out.

Newcomers: Thomas Wright, USMC by [livejournal.com profile] scherryzade (SGA)
2844 words; gen; OC; rated R for language
Summary: This is not his daddy's momma's Marine Corps.

I saw this rec'd somewhere as a series that introduces original characters to Atlantis, show some interesting new viewpoints. I liked this first one a lot, looking forward to reading more.

The Best-Laid Plans by [livejournal.com profile] rhymer23 (SGA/LOTR)
2700 words; gen; PG; Characters: McKay, Sheppard, Ronon, Teyla, Radek... and Gandalf; humor, crack
Summary: A man, an elf, a dwarf and a reluctant hobbit ("I don't even get to wear boots!") go on a quest that could change the world in ways that the wise have long foreseen. Alternatively, however…

How would things have played out had our Atlantis characters been in charge of Ring disposal? Turns out, quite different.

Difficulties in Mathematics by [livejournal.com profile] jadesfire2808 (SGA)
~13,800; Gen; G
It's been a while since I've read this one so I'll just write what I commented then... Clever mix of physics and technobabble with lots of teamy goodness, what more could one ask for.

Rodney paused, trying to think how he was going to explain without causing a general panic. Tact was probably called for and it would be as well to watch his words until he was absolutely sure about what was going on.
Of course, the words that actually came out of his mouth were, "Atlantis is about to be sucked into a black hole."

Second Verse (Same as the First) by [personal profile] sholio (SGA)
3000 words, Gen, PG-13, Characters: Teyla, John, team
Warning: Non-con(ish) situations. Dark. Issues with a capital "I".
Summary: "The Marines call it the Planet of the Willing Virgins, you know." It's the "willing" part that's debatable.

Excellent story that takes some of the unexplored implications of canon and builds on them in a way that's as plausible as it is chilling.

The You And Whose Army Job by [personal profile] liviapenn (Leverage/SGA)

Seriously fun crossover!

Sheppard Moon by [livejournal.com profile] tipper_green (SGA)
42,859 words; Gen; PG-13; Characters: Sheppard, McKay, Teyla, Weir, Ronon, Beckett, Caldwell, Hermiod
Summary: When the shield device around an Ancient spacestation begins to break down, it traps more than just our heroes...it traps the Daedalus.

From the author of Failure to Communicate, The Black Lake, and Desert Orkids... a long, juicy, plotty genfic back from the early days. Set in season two, iirc.

(okay, yesterday's rec was technically posted today because the weather was so gorgeous (SO gorgeous) that I didn't go back inside until after the sun set entirely. Which, this time of year, is around 11pm... and even then it doesn't get entirely dark. ♥ summer. Anyway, here's today's rec, I just finished reading it:)

In That Sleep of Death by [to be revealed] (Stargate: Atlantis)
gen; PG-13; team; action-adventure, set mid-season 3; 32,500 words
Summary: With the Wraith culling in earnest across the galaxy and mysterious mercenaries attacking defenseless villages, Team Sheppard chases after a possible weapon left behind by the Ancients in an abandoned outpost. They return empty-handed, but increasingly strange behavior causes them to question just exactly what they might have discovered after all.

A well-paced and gripping old-school action-adventure, in which plot and character exploration go hand in hand.

Ha, technically it's already tomorrow which is good timing, because I just finished a fantastic SGA story that was posted for the [livejournal.com profile] sga_genficathon:

The Child of Fear by [to be revealed]
gen; PG-13; Teyla and ensemble; action/drama/mystery; ~17,500 words
Summary: Atlantis must pick up the pieces after returning to Pegasus from an extended absence in the Milky Way. However, reclaiming their place in the Coalition will not be easy. The galaxy has changed, and not every change is visible.

This is the fic I've been waiting to read since I watched Enemy at the Gate: a story that examines Atlantis' place in Pegasus, the Lanteans' role within the Coalition, the question of loyalties inmidst Pegasus politics. At one point or two I thought I knew where the story was going, only to see it take an unexpected turn. A great read!

To further celebrate my newly discovered multifannishness: 10 recs from 10 fandoms.
fic recs:
It's All So Clear to Me Now by [livejournal.com profile] fools_game (Leverage)
PG; Parker POV, background Alec/Eliot and Nate/Sophie
Summary: Parker sees more than some people think.
Strong team/family vibe, great Parker voice!
The first time she fell asleep at Hardison’s she woke up scared out of her brain and nearly took Eliot’s eye when he came to wake her. Because she’d fallen asleep on the couch, and when she woke up she was in an unfamiliar bed, under the blankets, with no shoes on. She’d fallen asleep with other people around. They’d moved her while she slept, and she hadn’t noticed, hadn’t even stirred, and she freaked so hard she was fleeing through the lobby before she realised she was barefoot, and then she had to go back up to get her shoes. Alec gave her coffee as she walked gingerly back in, and there was an omelette waiting for her, and Eliot was hardly smirking at all, so she stayed for breakfast.
Come at the King by VanaTuivana (The Wire)
m/m; PG-13; Omar Little, with cameos from De’Londa Brice, baby!Namond, and Bird; pre-canon; 2,655 words
Summary: Omar Little be who he be, and ain't nobody come at him.
While seaching for Namond fic I instead found this gem and got sucked in from the very first line. Very compelling character study!

Ordo ad Fratres Faciendum by [personal profile] sholio (SGA)
(x-posted from genrec); PG-13; Ronon, Rodney, John, Teyla, Torren; set late S.5; 20,800 words;
Summary: A jumper crash separates the team on a wilderness planet, and they aren't alone.
"So. You and Ronon."
Rodney looked up from the video game console. "Wow, subtle."
"Are you guys, uh ..." John gestured with the game controller. He wasn't sure whether to finish with okay or fighting or capable of working together or what, so he just let it trail off into silence, though when Rodney's eyes went wide John realized that he might ought to have been a little more specific.
"We're not sleeping together, Sheppard."
"I didn't think you were!" Although it would, come to think of it, explain a few things.
Daily Mechanics by [livejournal.com profile] bravenewcentury (Fullmetal Alchemist)
gen; PG; Winry, Paninya;
Summary: There's a lot to get used to in a new town.
Winry and Paninya, making new lives for themselves in Rush Valley. Great friendship fic.

vid recs
Who Needs Enemies by theanonsisters (Deep Space Nine)
gen; Julian Bashir and others
Summary: Who needs enemies when you've got friends.
Smooth, elegantly cut, and most of all complex. Hm, kind of like the good doctor himself. :)

A Tall Tale by [profile] maichan808 (Big Fish (movie))
Summary: It's not the story, it's how you tell it...
Incredibly evocative of the movie. I had a major emotional response to this vid and looking at the comments I'm not the only one. Can't even put my finger on the mechanics of it.

Teal'c P.I. by Nibikko (SG-1)
summary: Teal'c's suggestion to Martin Lloyd in episode "200" for a Jaffa detective television series comes to life in this fan video.
Heee... pure glee in vid form!

Save Chuck (Chuck)
This is great fun to watch. It uses footage throughout the first three seasons but cut so out of context that it's practically spoiler free. I can imagine it'd make a really nice recruiter vid. Sooo... if you're curious and have no idea what the show is about, check out this vid to get an idea?
(And I can't get enough of that soundtrack, even though it gets used a *lot* in fanvids).

One Piece MMV (One Piece)
Don't know the story, but I like the effective way the manga panels are used to convey movement and time flow. And I really like the mood created by the pics and the soundtrack. Very interesting.

fanart rec
Doctor Hoo by pu-sama (Doctor Who)
All the doctors... as owls. Cute & pretty. The funny thing is, even though I never watched the show I recognized some of them, through fannish osmosis.

Heeey! I finished book #2. I still have to scan everything and format it, and I'll probably be getting a couple corrections for this one, but still... mostly done, with about a week to spare. \o/ And once it's turned in I'll have a whole month to work on my own projects - I have an idea for a kids' book that I think has a lot of potential, fingers crossed. And there's the comic thing. (And I gotta do my bookkeeping.) (And my taxes.) Hopefully some fanart. And post recs.

Uh, also, thanks to all the folks on my flist who brought Leverage to my attention. I had a feeling I'd love the show when I watched The Rashomon Job. That ep got me so curious that I started watching from the beginning and yup, totally love it. The characters are fantastic, and I always had a thing for heist stories. I'm only about six or seven eps in but I might be looking for fic recs later on. :)

It's funny, I used to be the typical fandom serial monogamist, but all of a sudden I'm multifannish? That's new; I kinda like it. Think I'll celebrate a job (hopefully) well done with an ep of Leverage, followed by a Chuck fic and a few pages from my new FMA doujinshi.

In this vein, a couple of multi-fandom recs:
Wait in the Van by Aelfgyfu (Chuck/White Collar)
gen; humor; 6,000 words
Summary: Peter kept telling Neal to wait in the van. Was it Neal's fault he didn't specify which one?
I don't actually know White Collar, but the story worked really well for me. If you're a Chuck fan, all you gotta know is that Neal is played by the same actor who plays Bryce Larkin and you're good to go.

Hyperion by Marcus Rowland (The Saint (novels)/BtVS)
Summary: The 1940s Saint pays a visit to Los Angeles and the Hyperion Hotel.
I'm reccing this fic and its two sequels, all Buffy crossovers. Marcus does a great job linking the two canons... not a small feat, since they're set in different periods in time.

Bigger on the Inside by [livejournal.com profile] sentientcitizen (Doctor Who/SG1/SGA)
gen; PG; ~700 words
Summary: Everyone says the same thing when they see the TARDIS for the first time. Well. Ish.
Various SG characters see the TARDIS for the fist time. Hilarious!
