Queen's Gambit, chapter 7: In which the inception of Colonel William Stryker goes about as smoothly as you might expect.
This actually contains the scene that I wrote this entire fic around, incidentally. If nothing else, it made me very happy to write it.
Two chapters to go on this one, and that'll be a HUGE weight off. This 'verse has been hanging over my head for going on two years now; it's time to lay it to rest.
Speaking of endings, closed a show today. THANK GOD. It was a good show, but was accompanied by more than the usual amount of offstage drama and stress, so I'm very ready to move on to the next one.

A few weeks ago I was urged to word-vomit about things I love about Harry Percy, or how I view his characterization, or any number of other &HOTSPUR; feelings. I've spent all day transcribing one stinking hour-long interview, and I have another hour and a half of interviews to transcribe, which means… at least four more hours of this. So, and to conclude!
( A few strong feelings about Harry Hotspur, The Hollow Crown-flavor )

There's a kind of of sci-fi or hacker or whatever movie, where the plot hinges on the fact that at some point a programmer has installed a BACK DOOR into the computer system, and all of its massive self-defense capabilities are worthless because THE BACK DOOR IS NOT GUARDED, and the heroes sneak in and bring the whole system down.
I went into this movie bracing myself, because the non-spoilery reviews I'd read were mixed. I was prepared. I was almost detached; I was ready to view the whole thing like a rational adult.
AND THEN.
*kof*
Well, you know.
Kirk and Spock were in it. And all was lost.
Gene Roddenberry, at some point in my youth (I was six, okay!), installed a back door in my BRAIN. In the first three minutes of this movie, my critical faculties were taken off-line and completely dismantled while I sat there beaming at the screen like a moron.
As it turns out, in those uniforms, on that starship, Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto could have perched on stools reading phone books at each other and I would have been ridiculously charmed and walked away starry-eyed.
So, no thoughtful review here, or likely to come. I'm sorry, Fandom! But there are some things which transcend even the discipline of the service.

We headed to the North End this morning. Walked around, saw a very old cemetary, various buildings and shops, went to the waterfront piers.
Then we visited the New England Aquarium, and I could've stayed there much longer than we did. (Mom was too tired to really enjoy it.) Bioluminescent jelly fish! Sea dragons! Fur seals! Blue penguins!
And I got to touch anemones and pet sting rays. Fun.
(Kind of regret not buying the souvenir book that had lots of photos. Or a plush toy sting ray.)
Then we went to the Back Bay and Newbury street and I went to the Vibram store and finally tried on the Lontras. Managed to get one on one foot, but it was very difficult and the shoe felt too tight and stiff. No luck! They were also out of any but the smallest sizes of the sequined Classics.
I went to the flagship VFF store and all I got was a t-shirt. Eeh.
We kept heading eastward, and I stopped at a Ben & Jerry's for a Liz Lemon Schmake. We eventually went through the Public Garden (very nice) and Beacon Hill and had supper at a Mongolian Barbecue restaurant before returning to the hotel.
Now, I wonder if I can watch this week's Game of Thrones. I think the hotel has HBO.

All I want to know is, how can there be all these icon posts for the last two episodes of OUAT season 2 and NONE of them contain a single icon of Baby Baelfire? I mean, the episodes were about him. Am I wrong?
As usual, I have to do it myself. I claim no talent at icon-making (hint, hint internet artistes). Also, since there were no good ActionPirate!Baelfire screenshots online (they are all blurry, kid's quick), I had to do that myself, too.

( Second star to the right, and straight on til morning )
Previous Baby!Bae icon post: http://masqthephlsphr.livejournal.com/9 38712.html
Note: animated gifs are probably too big for LJ/DW. Sorry.

Things yet to be unpacked, because they are in a box somewhere:
A lot of stuff is unpacked though, and we have a new mattress, which means that the not-very-old mattress is now in the guest room, and it's starting to feel like a real house.
Also, it's a little hot during the day, but man, when the sun starts to go down and it cools off a little, it's glorious. I'm so glad to be back in the South.
- All of the remotes for the electronics
- The hand towel that goes by my sink
- Tweezers
- A decent portion of my clothes
- My brown sandals, damnit

I finally saw the movie on Thursday, with a friend. First we had dinner at a Persian restaurant she had been to several years before and I had been curious about but never gone to; it was very tasty, and I'm pleased to have added it to my repertoire. Then the movie, which I very much enjoyed! (And still hope to see with Geoff, as well.) Snappy (and often funny) dialogue, manpain, Pepper being awesome, it's a win.
The preview for Thor 2 (right? 2?) got me interested mostly by dint of having Loki in it; the preview for Superman had an emotional power that drew me in as well; the preview for Star Trek didn't interest me at all, but I'll probably end up seeing it.
Now I'm sitting next to Geoff surfing the net while he watches hockey, which is a pretty standard evening for us. What isn't standard is that we're on Cape Ann, on the enclosed porch of a lovely B&B with the ocean gently crashing on the rocks just outside. It's supposed to rain for possibly the entire time we're here, but it hasn't started yet; we had a leisurely three-hour stroll along the coast and through town this afternoon, and if we spend the rest of our time snuggling on the porch watching rain over the ocean, that will not be a horrible few days. Though I do hope we manage the whale watch we've booked for Tuesday afternoon.

I haven't finished logging my time for last week yet, but I'm pretty sure it's going to clock in as the longest work week I've had so far. I'm working on a new product set to be released at the end of the year, which means that not only are we doing loads of customer demos and site visits, but we have to rearrange our development and testing schedules based on the dates for said demos and site visits. This week's trips included an executive visit with a VP at our company. There was a lot of staying up past midnight at various hotel business centers.
The week has been both invigorating and stressful, but among other things I've finally admitted to myself that I have to do something about my relationship with a particular colleague. ( Cut for length. )
