I've been sitting on my hands for weeks trying to stay out of the Keller wank, but this comment (in [livejournal.com profile] xparrot's poll post) drove me over the edge: You forgot the "She's the Devil! The Devil, I say! Douse her in gasoliine and light her on fire, the diabolical Mary Sue object of TPTB's fratboy lust! The foul Bella Swan of Science fiction!" option, because that's closer to what I actually feel about her.

This is just one of the many, many, MANY anti-Keller comments I've seen (even while trying my best to avoid them) but this one takes the cake. When I read it I became so angry my hands were trembling. Ever tried to color intricate lineart with trembling fingers? Not easy.

I can understand not liking a character or a relationship; there have been plenty of fandoms where I disliked one or the other. And we can argue forever about how well-written - or not - a character she is (No, I don't see her as a Mary Sue, no matter how loud and often the detractors call her that.) Nothing wrong with nitpicking a show; it's what we do. But the sheer amount of vitriol (no other word for it) I've seen directed at Jennifer Keller, Jewel, even the writers, stuns me. What is more, it acts as a total turnoff. I've had it happen to me in Angel fandom, where one fan groups' reaction nearly turned me off a character I used to love. I don't want this happen in SGA. I love the show. I love the John/Rodney pairing, be it friendship or ship. I want to keep on watching the show and drawing fanart and reading fic.

Right now it sounds an awful lot like some of the folks who feel like I do are considering withdrawing from fandom. Man, I really hope you won't. I mean, I can understand it but I really hope you'll stick around. I'm still optimistic this will blow over and I'll still be able to enjoy the fandom.

Anyway, I'm not going anywhere. I have to do my damndest to stay away from that kind of negativity though, in order to be able to enjoy my show, so I've started to take LJs off either my filters or my reading list whenever I encounter Keller bashing. It's nothing personal, I just don't want to read this stuff, or even see it pop up on my friends list. It's gonna make for a much smaller reading list, which sucks, but hopefully I'll stop being bummed out by LJ on a daily basis. I hope I can expand my reading list again once the season has finished airing.
