Sign-Ups for the fourth annual Rodney/Teyla Thing-a-thon are open until the 14th of February. This challenge accepts fic, art, icons, and vids, and this year it accepts Rodney&Teyla friendship as well as ship. (Which is cool, 'cause I'm just better at gen.)
Ronon and Todd vs a troup of Wraith
I found a program that allows to download an entire fic at ffn (and other sites) into one textfile. I just downloaded a 15 chapter fic with three or four mouseclicks. No more pasting together 29 chapters one by one! I think this is the beginning of a wonderful friendship.

All For One by [livejournal.com profile] linziday
gen; Rodney McKay, John Sheppard, OCs; 4,800 words
To John the air felt even heavier than it had earlier. Hotter. More oppressive. Too thick to draw a good breath.
A fun romp with bickering, teamwork, and whump (Shep), but above all I'm reccing it for the two original characters, who both got heaps of personality and are fun to watch.

Hard to imagine that a mere few weeks ago I was squeeing... about snow! Spring can come anytime now, please. Last week I saw a few crocusses and a little hyacinthe optimistically poke their heads out of the earth, and then another load of snow fell on top of them. Today I caved and upgraded my gym membership to include weekends and evenings.Read more... )

Hero Gets the Girl by [livejournal.com profile] bironic (SGA)
Rodney/Buffy fantasy, Rodney/Jennifer; PG-13; 425 words
Summary: What? It was no secret he had a type. (Flashficlet for two prompts at Battle IX: Buffy/Rodney, sarcasm; Jennifer/Rodney, hero.)

I really liked this. Cute, in-character, neat use of the prompts.

Bathing in Jordan by [personal profile] alixtii (AtS)
Cordelia/Kate; post-NFA; PG-13; 917 words
Summary: Sometimes baptism isn't a one-time deal.
Really good character voices. I only wish this fic was a couple thousand words longer but even so it's an intriguing scenario that made my brain spin and imagine the stories to come. (it also appears to be part of a larger series, which I haven't checked out yet.)

My favorite feature of the AO3 is the tagging system, hands down, because now it's possible to find the rarer stuff with just a mouseclick. I was always begriping the lack of fic about Kate Lockley, arguably one of the most interesting characters on the show (ymmv but please not in my LJ), but now... well, there's still not a lot but at least it will be much easier to find. I'm really hoping a lot of people will make use of the archive and upload their older work so the AO3 can unfold its full... awesomeness potential. :o)

Run, don't walk over to Deviantart: jdillon82 is a fantastic artist and has done a digital painting of Ronon that is smoking hot and badass and totally captures the character. (The rest of their gallery is original art, most definitely worth a look. Gorgeous coloring throughout.)

I'd say as of this minute I've officially lost track of the discussion. ;)

But can I say one thing: I'm just so happy this discussion is happening. I'm happy.

fancomic rec:
Mafdet, slayer of serpents by sqbr (SG-1)
summary: The Goa'uld are cruel and powerful beings, and they ruled Ancient Egypt as gods. They are, of course, no match for a cat.
Great story idea, very funny, and good execution too - the loose, cartoony lineart looks effortless and works really well for the story. And I love the coloring. (The pages took a while for me to load, but it's worth the wait.)

Jason Momoa is the New Conan the Barbarian
Whoot! \o/ This is good news. He deserves a high-profile role to showcase his talent and I think he can be really great in it... somehow I'm convinced he'll bring more nuance to it than Schwarzenegger. I just hope, hope, hope the script will be good. Please, writers, give him a good script. Because I so want to watch that.
Now if we could just get that show starring Luttrell and Hewlett I'd be a happy fangirl. But I don't think that has gotten past the rumor stage.

Um. I finally got the urge again to make some fanart. So, I had the idea to sketch a visual prompt for the monthly commentfic exchange at sgahcchallenges. Heh. This was self-indulgent and really fun. I've gone way too long without drawing fanart.

Prompt and sketch are at the comm:

You guys, check out this super-adorable fanart by [personal profile] pentapus, with Ronon and Keller as Lancelot and Guinevere.

And she made another one for monanotlisa with John and Rodney (link) which is cute and funny, but also, the art is frikking fantastic.

Via [personal profile] ratcreature: optical illusions - fascinating examples of how our color perception is influenced by the surrounding colors. If you click on the link under the second example, you can test it with a sliding animation.

meeting of minds by [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve (1,100 words)
A pitch-perfect Sam/Rodney fic that has the two of them at a science conference. If you love the pairing, go read! (If you don't love the pairing, heck, go read anyway. :)

Osmosis by [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve (600 words)
“Smushed,” Rodney said and blinked at her—and really, it’s not like it’s that surprising. Jennifer might have drawn the line at eating raw gr’tak with Teyla, but she grew up in rural Wisconsin. She’s an old hand at dealing with bugs. “Is that a medical term?”
This was written for my prompt. I wanted Jennifer/Rodney, and bugs. *beams*

Ha. I just completed my Jennifer Keller set at stargateficrec with two weeks to spare so I have accomplished at least something this month.... And I still have a couple recs left (I found a Cadman/Keller one, heh. :). I could save those up for another full set, only then I might end up with two categories again because I already volunteered for AU. Hm... By the way, they're always looking for new reccers over at ficrec. It's fun, really. And I think their how-to-rec has gotten less confusing for newbie reccers since their recent changes of the rec format.
x-posted from ficrec:

pay off by [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve
Rodney McKay/Jennifer Keller; PG-13 (my guess); 600 words
Why this must be read: Written for [livejournal.com profile] non_mcsmooch, with a very cool take on the prompt and also on a quite popular fanfic theme :). This ficlet is just 600 words long but it's a delightful look at the relationship between Rodney and Jennifer, and at Rodney himself.

And for something different, here's another Yuletide rec:
Spaceman Spiff Goes To Chirrutzz by [personal profile] elf
gen; 2456 words
Summary: In which Spiff is not slashed with Harkness, Mal, Kirk, or Zapp Brannigan. Nor with anyone else. Because Spiff is really too young for those games. (Yet.) Instead, he's on a mission to a dangerous, distant planet. Which is dangerous. And distant. And mission-y.

I have been meaning to rec these two Big Bang stories properly for weeks, and then sga_santa happened, fic got posted... But I really must share these!

The Magical Number Seven (Plus or Minus Two) by [livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur
gen; PG; Ensemble; AU; 61,155 words
Summary: This is a treatise on the nature of identity, and the interrelation of legitimacy and memory. Which is to say, it's mostly about John Sheppard, and how he found his way home. Also, there's a high body count, and Kraft Dinner is an exotic delicacy.

This story takes two 'what if' scenarios: 1) They don't get all of their memories back in 'Tabula Rasa' and 2) The copies of Weir and the team aren't killed in 'This Mortal Coil'. Each of these would make an interesting fic, but woven together, wow. This story is so original to read; it reinvents the 'verse, turns it inside out. And it tells so much about the characters, stripped off their memories... once you lose your memory, what part of yourself is left?

Whipping Boy by [livejournal.com profile] skinscript
gen; PG-13; 45,754 words
Summary: McKay, Lorne, and three teams of Marines head out on a research mission to a planet on the edge of the galaxy, and disappear without a trace. Eight months later Lorne returns with two injured team members, a counterfeit McKay, and no explanations. What the hell happened eight months ago, and where's McKay?

why rec'd: First off, the title of this fic is perhaps misleading... this isn't a woobie slave fic, it's a sci-fi story with a plot that gradually unravels its mysteries so that at any point in the story you just can't wait to see what's coming next. I took the printout anywhere I went so I could keep on reading. This is a good SGA fic, it's also good science fiction. There is some great world-building; the alien society in this story is fascinating (and scary as hell!)

It has snowed again overnight and it was lovely and sunny today, so I grabbed my camera and managed to take some decent pictures for once. A few pics of the snow-covered Westphalian landscape. )

Ronon and Todd vs a troup of Wraith
Happy New Year everybody! I had a lovely night with friends, fondue, and fireworks (not our own; we watched everybody elses). The cat was under the bed the whole time, poor bunny. Our neighbour's dogs freak out even worse, except for his trained hunting dog who gets all "Yay, where's the action?!" when she hears loud bangs. Anyway, I'm not a fan of fireworks because, well, I always had pets... but last night, with the new layer of snow that reflected the colors of the fireworks, was pretty. Then we went back inside and on the internet to show each other our fave YouTube clips. :D

fic recs!
Heart and Soul by Santa
gen; Teyla (POV) and Rodney, plus John, Ronon, Jennifer; G; 2,800 words
Summary: "You think there's something going on with McKay?"
Friendship fic with well-drawn characters. Another fave from secret Santa.

Siege tag by [livejournal.com profile] friendshipper
gen - John w/Rodney and a little Zelenka; 1300 wds.
A missing scene that really conveys that sense of exhaustion. Great character moment.

Hm, [personal profile] selenak just rec'd a yuletide Twin Peaks fic. I have a bunch of SGA fic printed and ready-to-read but I might squeeze that one in first. I had a quite obsessive love for TP, the only reason I wasn't in the fandom was that I didn't know about fandom. Or the internet.

I'm about to head off to the gym. Man, I've waited four long days to say that. I'm really not a fan of public holidays, especially several in a row. On the 25th it was raining all day and *everthing* was closed so we were stuck inside the house all day. (At least I finally got my portfolios sorted through). On the 26th I put on my rollerblades and made my way through icy sludge, gravel, and salt water but after a mile I gave up, came back and put on my running shoes. Running was also kind of adventurous with all the remaining icy patches. Yesterday I had a pleasant birthday with an extensive brunch and a trip to the climbing center. It really helped me over the whole turning 40 thing to climb two mean-ass routes with overhangs that I've never mastered before. \o/

Saw this linked on my flist: The 40 Worst Rob Liefeld Drawings
Warning: awful art inside (Awfully sexist too)
This induced giggles as well as rage. I admit, it really pisses me off that an artist with so little grasp of anatomy and, well, everything else, has a successfull career and makes millions of bucks while countless artists who could kick his ass on the drawing front have to struggle to make a living.
